How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Check service panel for tripped breakers/blown fuses. If breaker is tripped, reset it. If fuse is blown, replace it. If vacuum cleaner is plugged in, be sure power button is in the off position before resetting breaker/changing fuse.
CFM is the the speed of the air flow. CFM equates to a car`s top speed. Suction Lift is the measurement of the vacuum`s ultimate power. This can be compares to a car`s horsepower.
The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle). Some manufacturers show the results from measurements made at the suction of the actual vacuum cleaner.
The level you set your vacuum depends on the height of your carpet. For bare floors, use the lowest or bare floor setting, for short and medium pile carpets use a medium setting and finally, for plush carpets use the highest setting.
One caveat: Handling this vacuum`s 23 pounds takes some muscle. In our member survey, Kenmore canisters earned a very good score for predicted reliability and an average rating for owner satisfaction.
How long do Kenmore vacuums last? A. It`s suggested that the typical vacuum can last up to an average of eight years. With proper maintenance, a Kenmore vacuum could last that long or longer.
As mentioned above, the airflow rate is measured by the volume of air sucked into the vacuum in 1 minute using cubic feet (CFM). The more air flowing through a vacuum, the better, which therefore means that the higher the airflow rate, the higher the cleaning power.
Flow Rate: CFM

The vacuum flow rate is another critical factor to consider when purchasing a HVAC vacuum pump. The cubic feet per minute, or CFM, directly affects the time it takes to evacuate the air from the system, and the higher the CFM the faster the job can be completed given proper hose configuration.

Next, you need to consider suction power. Typically expressed in Pa (pascals), this is a measurement of how powerful the motor is inside a robot vacuum. A good number to look for here is around 2,000Pa or above for an effective clean.
A vacuum is a volume empty of matter, sometimes called `free-space`.
A canister vacuum consists of a wheeled body that is attached to a vacuum wand and power head via a flexible plastic hose. The canister portion of the vacuum contains the main motor, filter, and any dust bags; depending on the model, the power head may also contain a smaller motor.
Max(4000 PA): It can deeply clean the place that needs cleaning, dust cleaning is up 80%, garbage collection is up 30%, and the cleaning times are up to 80 minutes.
In the U.S., the common standard to measure rough vacuum is inches of mercury (“Hg), which can be measured in two different ways. One method is as “Hg gauge (“HgV), where the scale starts at 0” Hg (atmospheric pressure) and goes up to 29.92″ Hg, which is perfect vacuum.
For most models, the lowest setting is optimal for bare floors or thin carpeting. The middle setting offers the best suction for slightly fuller carpets. The highest setting is best for plush carpets or area rugs.
The quality of a vacuum is indicated by the amount of matter remaining in the system, so that a high quality vacuum is one with very little matter left in it. Vacuum is primarily measured by its absolute pressure.
Take your time. Vacuuming slowly will allow your machine to suck up more dirt and dust, and ultimately get your rugs and carpets much cleaner. Slow vacuuming allows the brush to agitate the carpet properly and suck up the unclean bits that emerge.
Vacuum Cleaners and Its Types:

They are majorly used to remove dirt and dust from upholstery, carpets, velveteen furniture and floors made of hardwood and many varieties of floors, including laminated floors. They are also used to clean cars and stairs. Based on the uses, Vacuum cleaners are made into different types.

Kenmore is a recognized brand in the appliance industry and has been around over 100 years. Kenmore offers high-quality refrigerators in a wide range of sizes and models at affordable prices. Variety: Kenmore offers a huge selection of appliances, from mini-refrigerators to giant, commercial appliances.
Over time and extended use, a very fine layer of particles will start to line the inside of a vacuum bag, remaining in place even after the bag is emptied. This means that the bag will lose the proper airflow required to let the incoming air escape. As the airflow is restricted, the suction dies down too.
According to Consumer Reports, vacuum cleaners last a median of eight years. But the lifespan varies wildly by not only brand but your own personal use.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Problems can occur when overused or clogged filters cause the vacuum motor to overheat. This not only shortens the motor life but causes a loss of suction. In some cases, total motor burn out can occur.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.

25512/ 25513 Progressive Canister Vacuum: HI, we have a kenmore progressive canister vacuum …
ANSWER : Cord bad at male prongs, or fuse near motor blown.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.

How do I change the belt on my Sears vacuum? – Kenmore 25512/ 25513 Progressive Canister Vacuum
ANSWER : Hello,

Here’s what you’ll need to replace a belt on a Kenmore2_bing.gif canister vacuum:

– Phillips Head Screw Driver
– Flat Head Screw Driver

Here’s how you can replace the belt on your Kenmore Canister vacuum cleaner. First, before taking apart the power nozzle to change the belt, try pressing the overload protection system reset switch. This overload protection feature is designed to shut off the power nozzle if something gets stuck in the brushes, to prevent the belt from breaking. On most Kenmore models it’s either a grey switch cover to the right of the neck for your power nozzle, or it could also be a little red colored pole. The reset switch will turn all power off to the power nozzle. If you turn on the vacuum, and try turning on the power nozzle and you hear absolutely no noise, then it’s possible it may just need to be reset. It also could mean that your hose may have a short circuit in it (pretty common on Kenmore), and the hose is not getting power down to the power nozzle. If however you turn on the power nozzle, and you can hear the motor in the power nozzle come on when you switch it to carpets, then mostly likely your belt needs to be changed. On the model that I was fixing, the reset switch is a grey color, and I highlighted the reset switch in red:

So we’ll just say for this repair that you are able to hear some noise come on in the power nozzle, but the brush is still not turning. This indicates a bad belt. Here’s how you can fix it:

Step 1. If you’re power nozzle is a square shaped nozzle like the nozzle that I took a picture of above, then you’ll need to first remove the headlight cover before you can access the roller brush and belt. Simply squeeze both sides of the headlight housing, and while squeezing, lift upwards with your fingers exactly where my fingers are located in this picture:

d570964.jpg
Step 2. After the headlight cover has been removed, you’ll see two screws underneath of the headlight cover, directly in front of the neck of the power nozzle. You’ll need to remove both of these screws. I have circled these screws in red:

d1226f3.jpg
Step 3. After both of these screws have been removed, turn the power head upside down, so the roller brush is facing upwards. Look on the both the left and the right sides of the power nozzle. You should see writing that points to an area to put your flat head screw driver. You’ll need to put the flat head screw driver down inside of the nozzle, and pry the top blue housing from the black bottom housing. Here’s where the screw driver should go on the left side0723429.jpg:

Here’s a picture of the screwdriver prying off the right side:

5501d52.jpg
Step 4. Now turn the power nozzle back over on top, and remove the top housing of the nozzle. You may have to push the handle release pedal in order to take the top housing off.

Step 5. Once the top housing has been removed you should now either see a white semi-circle shaped housing over top of the brush, or your model may not have this part (some did and others didn’t). If yours has a long white part over top of the power nozzle, look at the back corners of this white colored housing, and you’ll see two clips, one on each side. You need to push these clips in, and pull backwards at the same time.

Step 6. Once this white colored housing has been removed, or if you model didn’t have this housing, you’ll now have full access to the roller brush and belt. You should instantly be able to see the belt if it’s broken, as it won’t be connected to the roller brush. Simply pull straight up on the roller brush to remove it from the vacuum cleaner:

Step 7. Wrap one end of the belt around the metal motor shaft in the back of the nozzle. Wrap the other end through the roller brush, and stretch the brush back into the housing where it belongs. Simply reassemble the parts, and test the vacuum to make sure the brush spins!

If you don’t hear the power nozzle motor come on when you change the hose from Floors to Carpeting, this either means the reset switch needs to be pushed, or that you have a bad hose that needs to be replaced.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

When we turn on the vacuum, the canister falls open. The clips holding the canister in place do not seem to hold the canister tightly which I’m sure that it did in the past. The clips do not look bent, but every time we turn on the vacuum the intense pressure blows the canister open only remaining attached the the rest of the vacuum by one clip
ANSWER : Check filter and make sure it is kept clean at regular intervals. Possibly worn out clip retainers on cannister side due to excessive pressure build up. Do not force closure unless pressure is back to normal. May crack cannister or damage unit beyond repair.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.
