How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

There are three main causes for your Miele to not power on: The power switch has failed. The cord reel is damaged. Your motor has gone bad.
Set the vacuum upright and lift up on the release button to open the dust compartment. Pull the tab on the dust bag to remove it from the vacuum. Discard the old dust bag. Wipe down the interior of the dust compartment with a dry cloth.
With average use, a Miele vacuum cleaner bag should last for around three months. However, this can vary depending on your home and how often you vacuum. If you have a large home or wall-to-wall carpets, budget to replace your bag every month.
Typically users get about 50-60 hours of use from the filter before they need to replace it. Every new Miele filter and vacuum cleaner now comes with this Timestrip. To activate the Timestrip, simply push/crush the small green button, and when the bar is full red, it`s time to replace.
If your vacuum has a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA filter), you`ll know it`s time to replace it when the indication strip turns red. According to Miele owner manuals, this equates to about once a year.
Grab the clog with a pair of needle-nose pliers and pull it out. Open a pair of needle-nose pliers and feed it into the end of the lower hose. Once you feel the clog, pinch the blockage with your pliers to get a good grip on it. Pull the clog out of the hose and throw it away.
Low suction or poor pick-up may be due to a clog in the vacuum cleaner. If you notice a change in the sound of the motor or a reduction in the spinning action, check for clogs. First, remove the Easy Empty dirt tank from the vacuum and discard all dirt and debris.
If there is a clog in the vacuum, you won`t have good suction and the vacuum won`t work. The clog can be in the vacuum head, the hose or where the hose meets the actual vacuum.

To fix this problem, you will need to check the drain hose for any clogs or blockages. You may also need to clean the base pan and drains to remove any debris build-up. If you still have problems, you can contact a Miele service technician for further assistance.

Oreck XL How to remove rear wheel. Removed all viewable hair, thread, etc., but one wheel is still hard to turn. I think there’s hair stuck inside the wheel core. Can I remove the wheel & take it off the metal post?
ANSWER : You can take a medium size flathead screwdriver and slide it in beside the wheel and under the pin. Then pry carefully on one side and then the other it will start to come out but work both sides alternately so you won’t put too much pressure on the plastic. Once it is out you can clean it and put it back in. Line up the pin and use a blunt end tool like a punch to tap it back in. You can use the same screwdriver but don’t hit it too hard. You can tell when it is in all the way when it bottoms out. Make sure you look closely at it before you take it out so you will know what it is suppose to look like.

Both of the wheels are wobbly and loose on my Kenmore upright vacuum model 721.37060. I don’t see where I can remove them to analyze and fix the problem, which seems to be that the wheels are loose on their axels. How do I get the wheels off and what do you think I’ll find inside?
ANSWER : Most if not all vacuums have an access panel on the bottom. It may be held on by a couple of big plastic clips, the kind you squeeze together and it releases a door. Some have plastic screws. There may also be a couple of phillips screws along with it or screws alone.Every one I have had for at least 20 years has the bottom open.I constantly clean the brush/rollers due to strings and such.I have found a link for your vacuum. It appears that your answer is on page 18.You need Adobe to read it.If you do not have it it is a FREE,SAFE download,no junk.I have used it for years.Good luck!
