How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
Check the hoses, the filters, and throughout the vacuum, and clean out any blockages or clogs. Vacuums will likely also have a recommended cooldown time to ensure that the vacuum won`t overheat. You will need to wait for that time before you turn the vacuum back on.
If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.
Turn off the vacuum cleaner – then check if the nozzle, tube, hose or filters are blocked and/or dirty. Let the product cool down for a minimum of 2 hours on the charging stand before starting it again (stick vacuum cleaners only)

.Detach the hose, turn vacuum on. If it runs, place palm of hand against inport hole. If it shuts off the problem is with either the control valve setting or the control valve assembly itself.
.For cvs, turn dial on top of vacuum all the way to the largest dot, and try above test again. If that doesn’t work, then it’s the CVA. It needs to be cleaned or replaced, which is an in shop job. Fro repair, take it to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store. I recommend a full clean and service to remove any dust/dirt from the motor, fan assembly, and other internal parts.
.
.Another problem, which relates to the dial setting, is that fine dust will quickly clog the pores of the bag, resulting in the machine “thinking” the bag is full. Turning the dial to the proper setting helps get the bag fuller. The middle setting is the normal setting, and is for areas without fine dust and sand.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)
.The most likely problem is clogged, worn, or broken control valve assembly (CVA). It could also be clogged tubes to the CVA. This is usually caused by using “made to fit” bags rather than the genuine bags made by Home Solutions. The vacuum would need to be taken to an authorized Aerus Electrolux store for repair/replacement. Generally, if this is the problem, the interior of the vacuum, including the motor, needs cleaned as well.
.Some other simple things you can check are:
.Dirty afterfilter. This is located on the exhaust hole on the back of the vacuum. To access, press in on tab at back of the exhaust cover, lift cover from the back, and remove filter. If the filter is dark, it is clogged with dust particles and needs replaced. Turn vacuum on and run it for awhile. If it continues to run, this is the problem.
.Another potential cause is a clogged hose. Disconnect hose at both ends. Drop a coin down one end and lift that end to allow coin to drop through the other end. If it does, fine. If not, connect hose to the exhaust port, place other end into a large garbage bag, or into the in port of the vacuum, and turn on. This almost always clears the hose.
.Check the elbow of the power nozzle where the hose connects. Drop a coin through here to check for clogs. If there is one, it can generally be cleared by pushing it toward the brush with a wooden spoon handle, or similar blunt object.
