How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

A carpet beater bar is essentially a floor nozzle for a vacuum equipped with a rotating beater bar that spins while the vacuum is in use. By spinning, it agitates the carpet and loosens any lead dust that might be stuck in carpet fibers.

Many vacuums feature a rotating brush, known as a beater bar, which is designed to agitate the carpet fibers to help loosen soil deep in the pile. This feature is helpful in many cut-pile carpets but can be damaging to certain styles.

If the unit runs for a few minutes then shuts off, the motor needs to be replaced. Central vacuum motors generally last for 800-1100 working hours. If your motor has run less than 800 hours or activates by jolting the canister, it may be possible to extend the life of the motor by replacing the carbon motor brushes.
Perfect vacuum has a pressure of 0.0000 mbar absolute.
The powerful airflow from the vacuum can help shake dirt and debris loose and pull them into the vacuum. Without the fan, a vacuum couldn`t work at all. But the roller brush is critical, too. It`s necessary in dislodging deep dirt and stuck debris, and it helps clear a path for air to carry dirt into the vacuum.
A vacuum cleaner`s brush roller also called the beater bar assists in cleaning your carpets and depending on your vacuum model, a variety of floors. The brush roller is usually located under the vacuum cleaner and some in the attachment tool.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.
While different factors affect how long a system lasts, many central vacuums can last 20-30 years, or even longer, depending on how often they are used.
If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end. Another option would be to reverse the airflow through the hose by connecting the handle end into the intake on the main unit.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
To turn off the beater bar on most vacuums, you will need to locate the beater bar control switch, which is usually located on the body of the vacuum or on the handle. Once you have found the switch, you can either slide it to the “off” position or flip it to the “off” position, depending on the design of the switch.
In the U.S., the common standard to measure rough vacuum is inches of mercury (“Hg), which can be measured in two different ways. One method is as “Hg gauge (“HgV), where the scale starts at 0” Hg (atmospheric pressure) and goes up to 29.92″ Hg, which is perfect vacuum.
Pascal (Pa): the unit for measuring vacuum or pressure in the International System or SI. One pascal equals one newton (SI unit of force) per square meter. 105 Pa equals 1 bar.
You may have stalled the brush motor. To reset, turn off and unplug, then plug back in and turn on. The brush roll may have lodged debris or other entanglements keeping the brush from rotating. To fix, you`ll need to remove the brush roll to inspect.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
Push harder than you pull.

Many people naturally exert more force when they`re pulling their vacuums back than when they`re pushing them forward, but this can leave dirt on the floor. Vacuums are designed to be pushed forward at a rate of about 12 inches per second and pulled back at a rate of 6 inches per second.

A turbo brush contains a rotating brush to lift and beat your carpet or fabric as you vacuum. The rotating brush in a turbo brush is air-driven and relies on the suction power of the vacuum to keep rotating. The more powerful your vacuum the faster and more effective the turbo brush.
After a year or so, you may need to replace your vacuum`s beater brush. If the bristles seem to be squished, broken or are varying heights, it`s time to replace the brush. These can be found online with the vacuum`s brand and model of your vacuum cleaner.
A handy demolition tool for landscapers, the BRUSHBAR allows for quick tear out of shrubs and bushes small and large. Clear and maintain properties, parks, and nature without the use of chemicals. Useful for many landscape task – pry up rocks, tear out slabs, shift large pieces of stone or paving blocks into place.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
“We would recommend vacuuming at least once or twice a week—and more often if we have pets—with the right tools to remove dust quickly and effectively,” Patel advises.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Frequent vacuuming remains one of the best ways to keep your home clean. If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.

I ran my vacuum against an area rug that has strings around it and a few strings got caught up in the beater bar. Now, the beater bar does not function- the motor runs but the beater bar does not seem to be operating. I removed the strings from the bar.
ANSWER : Hi,
.
.There is a switch next to the main power switch on the handle which turns the brushbar on and off. When the beater bar becomes obstructed as in your case, there is a safety feature which cuts power to the beater bar. All that needs to be done in most cases is to turn this switch off and back on again and the beater bar should resume operation.
.
.The beater bar on / off / reset switch is the yellow switch to the left of the main power button if you are standing in front of the hoover:

Kirby Heritage II. Beater bar does not turn. One end rotates freely, but the other sticks, preventing the bar from rotating. No obvious means to disassemble the end of the bar. Is there a way to repair this, or does this require replacement of the beater bar? Did clean the front end assembly, and removed all hair, threads and similar obstructions.
ANSWER : The bearing is bad on the end that turns hard. You will need to purchase a new brush roll assembly. If the roller is older that 4 or 5 years, it should be changed anyway. The brush strips that scrub the carpet loose their strength after many years of combing through the carpet, so it’s a good idea to change it every 5 years or so.

ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

Check that the brush control dial is in the centre position when the machine is locked upright. When you release the head and pull the handle back this dial should mopve forward to the on position. Once here, the brush bar should turn.

If this doesnt resolve the problem, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).
