What is a Beater Bar? A beater bar is a smoothly contoured metal agitator bar on a rotating brush roller. See below image. It works in conjunction with bristle brushes to gently beat the fibers, when the beater bar rotates, to loosen soil and allow the brushes to comb away the soil into the suction ports of the vacuum.
Many canister vacuums are designed without a beater bar, relying simply on a suction nozzle instead. For example, some of the best vacuums for vinyl plank floors are those without beater bars.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
After a year or so, you may need to replace your vacuum`s beater brush. If the bristles seem to be squished, broken or are varying heights, it`s time to replace the brush. These can be found online with the vacuum`s brand and model of your vacuum cleaner.
Clear the brush roll of any hair and debris and inspect by placing it on its end and spin. The brush should spin freely. If it doesn`t spin; it may be time to replace.
The typical negative gauge pressure range for measuring vacuum is 0 to -1 bar gauge but if the barometric pressure is below 1 bar absolute -1 bar will never be achieved and if the barometric pressure is above 1 bar absolute then full vacuum cannot be measured.
Hair screw tool
It`s designed with an anti-tangle conical brush bar so that you can pick up long hair and pet hair – fast. Unlike other anti-tangle tools, Dyson`s doesn`t compromise on performance. An integrated motor in the brush bar spins at up to 3500rpm to remove ground-in dirt.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.

BEATER BAR OUR CLEANER IS ONE YEAR OLD AND HAS BECOME VERY NOISY WHEN THE BEATER BAR IS ON … HAVE CHECKED THE BELT AND MOVEMENT OF THE ROLLER .. DOESN’T SEEM TO BE THE ISSUE. ANY SUGGESTIONS
ANSWER : The newer models have plastic end caps that will melt when the bearing heats up. This will cause the cap to go “off-centre” and the roller will vibrate badly. If this is the case, you will have to replace the roller.
.If the belt is a geared drive, check the belt for any missing teeth.
Windtunnel first one used 6 times beater bar stopped working, took apart cleaned and belt was fine. this one had a reset switch for beater bar. had insurance at best buy so returned for a new one. used 2x beater bar not working and not dirty, no reset switch on this one., now back to the store for another? i don’t even want the same one. I wonder how many they are gonna give me. This seems to be a common occurance.
ANSWER : Sorry, you feel like that. I have rentals and 6 windtunnel’s (I prefer the bagged ones) and have never had a problem such as you have described. I think Hoover makes a great vacuum.
I have a Eureka 4870GZ. It turns on, but the brush roller doesn’t move. The belt looks fine. I do have an extra belt and would try replacing the old belt, but I can’t get the old one off the motor shaft or the new one on. I called Eureka customer service. The lady said there’s supposed to be a small space between the motor shaft and the outside edge of the vacuum where I can slip the old belt off and the new one on. I don’t see it. It looks like the motor shaft goes into a recessed place in the
ANSWER : Remove the top cover so that you can access to belt, You’ll find 2 rows of 4 decorative holes on the top cover, In two of the holes you’ll find the screws, Please use a flash light to see in that., Once the screws are removed, you’ll be able to take out the top cover. Pull the belt so that it should rotate the shaft and look for small space in between from where you can take off the old belt and new belt on. remove the agitator from its drive shaft, put new belt in, put the agitator back into place. The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.
Hoover WindTunnel Self-Propelled V Belt
ANSWER : I had this same problem with the V belt on my Hoover Vaccuum..
.There are three (3) basic things that will cause the brush roll not to spin..
.1. When handle is upright, brush roll is OFF..2. When switch is set for HARD surface, brush roll is OFF..3. Broken/worn FLAT belt or V Belt, brush roll will not spin.
.
.I noticed that the brush roll was not spinning when my vacuum was set for CARPET. After removing the cover I noticed that the V belt was loose, I thought the belt was worn so I purchased a correct replacement belt and installed it, but the new belt was also loose and when I turned the large flat belt pulley it did not turn the V belt pulley at the same time..
.I double checked the surface setting and I had the vacuum switch set for carpet, but still when I released the handle out of the upright position the brush roll would still not spin..
.My aggravation finally led me to this posting on FixYa’s website..
.The first thing I did was checked the screw to the left of the V belt as suggested by ejmjr5 and this did nothing to solve the problem or create more tension on the V belt, even when the upright handle was not in the upright position..
.After playing around with the surface setting control switch/nob I notice that when I moved the switch out of the HARD surface setting and over to CARPET, I had thought that the switch was set for CARPET as it visually appeared, but I was not pushing the switch over hard enough to click it into the CARPET setting mode..
.VOILA, the brush roll now spins correctly even though the V belt seams to be too loose for the pulley..
.You really have to force the switch into the CARPET setting. Be sure that you hear the switch/nob click into place..
.Now you can effectively clean up after that hangover of a party!.
.Burp!
Windtunnel belt I have a new Hoover Windtunnel canister. The belt keeps coming off. It happened a couple weeks ago (several times after putting the belt back on) so I assumed I might need a new belt as it might have dried out at the store. I ordered new belts and today I used it for about an hour and the belt came off again, twice. There doesn’t seem to be anything to hold the belt on the stem as it seems to slip off. I have tried it centered, to the left and to the right….can you help. I am v
ANSWER : I’ve successfully used a compatible belt – Royal 104425001 .It’s still new, but for the time being at least – it works.
I replaced the belt in our Eureka Boss Smart Vac, it still seems loose, it uses a type R belt. The beater belt still doesn’t seem to turn properly and seems that it doesn’t pick up very well when I use it on my berber carpet. We have 2 dogs and I like to use it frequently. I have changed the bags and belt……
ANSWER : Check to see that the beater brush is not frozen up. Pull the brush and clean it, spraying some WD40 on each end piece that holds the brush in place..Also be sure the belt is properly installed so that the brush turns in the correct direction..If the brush is not turning or not turning in the correct direction, it will not beat the dirt from the carpet so that it can be picked up by the vacuum’s suction.
My Dyson DC17 beater bar motor works intermittedly. I have to almost whack it on the floor to turn it on and then shuts off again. I have checked the belt and it is fine, also have checked for blockages. The switch to turn the beater bar on or off will not work when the beater bar motor is off. the suction is fine though.
