How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

A turbo brush contains a rotating brush to lift and beat your carpet or fabric as you vacuum. The rotating brush in a turbo brush is air-driven and relies on the suction power of the vacuum to keep rotating. The more powerful your vacuum the faster and more effective the turbo brush.
The two settings – brushes up and brushes down are to help you clean both carpets and hard floors. When the brushes are up you can get nice and close to carpeted floors and suck up all the dust and nasties hidden in the fibres.
The bristle guard separates hair from the brushroll until an integrated comb actively removes the hair from the bristles. Hair is sucked up into the dust cup, leaving the brushroll ready to deep-clean.
The suction power indicator tells you when the air flow in your vacuum is reduced due to dirty filters or a clog in the hose. The suction power indicator will remain green until the airflow is reduced.
Your machine comes with two filters. To locate the Pre-Motor filter, press the tank release button and remove the dirt tank. To access the filter, press the Filter Button found on the front of the tank and remove the foam filter from the tray.
Suction Power

This is an indication of how good the vacuum cleaner is to clean – i.e. the work to be done. The suction power is measured in Watt (W) and is typically between 250 W and 450 W for machines with 1 motor.

What is a Good Suction Power for a Vacuum Cleaner? An upright cordless vacuum cleaner should have at least 100 air watts to effectively clean a variety of floor surfaces, with the best Samsung vacuum cleaner reaching up to 210W*.
The suction brush kit enables thorough interior car cleaning of dashboards, foot mats, upholstered surfaces, etc., and is suitable for use on all materials. For all Home & Garden wet and dry vacuum cleaners.
A turbo brush has rotating brushes that make the vacuum suck dirt out of high-pile carpets better or pick up pet hair from the ground better. If you have pets, high-pile carpet, or coarse rugs, a vacuum with turbo brush is the best choice for you. Or, you can order a separate turbo brush for your vacuum.
A vacuum cleaner`s brush roller also called the beater bar assists in cleaning your carpets and depending on your vacuum model, a variety of floors. The brush roller is usually located under the vacuum cleaner and some in the attachment tool.
The level you set your vacuum depends on the height of your carpet. For bare floors, use the lowest or bare floor setting, for short and medium pile carpets use a medium setting and finally, for plush carpets use the highest setting.
Bagless vacuums, as the name suggests, don`t use a replaceable bag that collects the dust and dirt from the surface. A bagless vacuum cleaning machine is compact and uses a dust cup or chamber to store the dust and dirt. The dust cup used in the vacuum cleaner can be easily emptied and cleaned.
The base of the box has wheels and brushes, connected by a belt or gears or rollers. There is also a container for dirt. The arrangement is such that, when pushed along a floor, the rollers/wheels turn and force the brushes to rotate. The brushes sweep dirt and dust from the floor into the container.
The Roborock S5 offers 2000Pa of suction power. Pa is short for Pascal Pressure Unit. The higher the number, the higher the suction power. Could you imagine what 2000Pa means? It means that the Roborock S5 has enough suction to pick up AA batteries off your floor.
It is obtained by measuring how many inches up a tube the vacuum motor`s intake can pull up, or lift, the water. For the Water Lift test, there is no air moving through the motor. It is a sealed suction measurement to find the pure suction force of the motor.
Model Number

It`s usually on the lower back or bottom of the machine (for Lift-Off® models, remove the Lift-Off pod to find label) or behind the cleaning tanks. On cleaning formulas the model number is actually called an item number. Look for it on the back of the bottle or can, near the bottom.

“Most vacuum cleaners will have two filters – pre-motor and post-motor. In general, the pre-motor filter would be made of foam or fabric and can handle a larger quantity of dust before needing cleaning. The post-motor filter would more likely be folded or pleated and made from a finer filter medium.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
Our line of air purifiers have HEPA filters, too. BISSELL air400, air320, air220 all have three stages of filtration, with a pre-filter, an activated carbon filter and a HEPA air filter.
Vacuum flow determines the volume of air that can be moved over time, which translates to how quickly air can be suctioned. Common units of measurement for flow rates include cubic feet per minute (CFM), liters per minute, and gallons per minute, to name a few.
The normal range of the suction pressure is 0.8–1.2 MPa. If the suction pressure is greater than 1.2 MPa, connect a rubber hose for the pressure gauge to the gas pipe needle valve for the outdoor unit, and rotate open the pressure gauge to slowly release refrigerant.
Max(4000 PA): It can deeply clean the place that needs cleaning, dust cleaning is up 80%, garbage collection is up 30%, and the cleaning times are up to 80 minutes.

I purchased a Eureka C4910 last year and have a question that I am hoping you can answer.

There are two motor actions with this vacuum, 1) the vacuum suction, and 2) the beater bar. The action of the beater bar is that motor is supposed to automatically shut off when the handle is in the complete vertical position assuming the vacuum is stationary, but then turn on when the handle is tilted toward the floor, assuming the vacuum is moving back and forth.

The beater bar motor turn-on mechan

ANSWER : Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that’s why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.

Thank you and don’t forget to rate my answer.

I had a shoelace get stuck in the beater bar. I turned it off, tipped it over and untangled the shoelace from the beater bar. When I plugged it back in the vacuum ran but the beater bar was not turning and there wasn’t any suction. Is there a reset switch for the beater bar? Thank you for your help, Janet
ANSWER : Hi Janet. there is a small reset button on the outside of the head next to the brush that you can push to get it to start spinning again.

The beater bar on my Dyson won’t turn. The vacuum runs and suctions but the bar won’t turn and the belt is not broke. The beater bar did get a carpet fiber caught and wrapped around it which stopped the bar and I removed the bar to cut the fiber loose and replaced it and now it won’t turn
ANSWER : The belt doesn’t have to be broken to make the vacuum not work correctly. If the belt is stretched the vacuum won’t operate the way it is supposed to. You can get replacement Dyson Belts here:

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

No suction Just received my refurb. dyson animal bagless. Finally figured out how to get it all together, turned it on and there is no suction coming up thru the beater bar. The hair is just collecting around the bar and not going up into the canister. It appears all the suction is going thru the open red end of the attachment hose, which has a vented cover piece. Am I missing a piece or is there a switch to turn of the attachment suction?
ANSWER : So the red hose isn’t connected to a part on the vaccum so like it is connected to the connester but not to an opening just above the beater bar, this is the only idea i can supply you with. good luck, maybe i got lucky and helped you out.

I ran my vacuum against an area rug that has strings around it and a few strings got caught up in the beater bar. Now, the beater bar does not function- the motor runs but the beater bar does not seem to be operating. I removed the strings from the bar.
ANSWER : Hi,
.
.There is a switch next to the main power switch on the handle which turns the brushbar on and off. When the beater bar becomes obstructed as in your case, there is a safety feature which cuts power to the beater bar. All that needs to be done in most cases is to turn this switch off and back on again and the beater bar should resume operation.
.
.The beater bar on / off / reset switch is the yellow switch to the left of the main power button if you are standing in front of the hoover:

.
.Reset the beater bar and you should be back up and running.
.
.If you have already done this or it doesn’t solve your problem, please post back for further assistance.
.
.PLEASE NOTE: This reset method is for the Dyson DC17 ANIMAL as stated above. If you have a different version of the DC17, please post back for alternative instructions and state which version of DC17 you have.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I have a DC 17. In the middle of vacuuming the vacuum stopped working when it was in the upright position. It only works when the head is down and i am using the bar. I can not use the extension bar, becasue when I put the vacuum upright it shuts off. Where is the problem?
ANSWER : Hi there, it’s Jack at Dyson.
.
. Like most Dyson vacuums, DC17’s main suction motor is protected by a thermostat which shuts the machine down if it starts to overheat. This could be due to a blockage, and the filter may also need a wash. If this occurs, the separate brush bar motor will still run if you recline the vacuum, and shut off when you stand the vacuum upright.
.
. The vacuum should reset itself automatically after it’s cooled down for around 2 hours. To prevent this from reoccurring, please wash the filter as shown in our video guide – in normal use this should be done at least once every 3 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow the filter to dry completely for at least 24 hours before replacing it.
.
..Once you’ve done this it’s important to check the vacuum for any blockages – our Support guide will walk you through each checkpoint to make sure nothing is missed: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc17/dc17-allfloors/diagnosis-root-menu/dc17filterwashvid/flo-dc17-wand-suction
.
.This should resolve the issue. However if the issue reoccurs when the filter is clean and there are no obstructions in the airways, there could be an issue with the cyclone pack itself.
