How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
Brush Head Bearings Are Clogged or Have Failed

These are symptoms of bad or dirty bearings. You should remove the brush roll or rolls from the vacuum. Check to see that the bearings at the end of the brush roll allow it to spin freely. Make sure that there is no hair trapped in the bearings.

To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.

Test that by turning the motor off and pushing on the center shaft, the armature. If it has any play, besides spinning, then replace the motor. If solid then replace the brushes – motor brush replacement instructions.

If your brush is scratching your floor, or not cleaning as well as it used to, then you may want to replace your brush bar.

The battery runtime depends on the suction level and the selected attachment. With the standard electric brush in low suction mode, the V7 lasts for 30 minutes. In turbo mode, the cordless vacuum cleaner works for only 6 minutes. The charging time of the Dyson V7 is only 3.5 hours.
If your vacuum cleaner had a strong acrid burning smell before it lost power then the chances are the motor has failed which will require a motor replacement.
How frequently does your air purifier need an air filter replacement? It`s recommended that you change your filter every 12 months.
Even with the powerful suction for which the Dyson brand is known, the Dyson vacuum can get clogged. If this happens, you can easily remove the clog and get back to vacuuming quickly.
1-5 of 5 Answers. Hi Milly, This is Carissa with Dyson. The brush bar does not turn off on the cordless units. We would recommend the Articulating Hard Floor tool for the rugs.
Hold your brush bar under cold tap water and gently rub to remove any lint or dirt. Stand the brush bar upright and leave to dry completely. Make sure your brush bar is completely dry before refitting. The cleaner head housing is not washable and should only be wiped over with a damp lint-free cloth.

Should the brush not rotate freely there may be debris tangled around the ends of the brush, carefully remove any obstructions or replace the brush with a new one. We recommend that you fit a new belt and brush once per year to keep your Reactive vacuum working efficiently.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I purchased a Eureka C4910 last year and have a question that I am hoping you can answer.

There are two motor actions with this vacuum, 1) the vacuum suction, and 2) the beater bar. The action of the beater bar is that motor is supposed to automatically shut off when the handle is in the complete vertical position assuming the vacuum is stationary, but then turn on when the handle is tilted toward the floor, assuming the vacuum is moving back and forth.

The beater bar motor turn-on mechan

ANSWER : Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that’s why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.

Thank you and don’t forget to rate my answer.

Beater bar wont spin – Dyson DC14 All Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner
ANSWER : Hello rud…. this is due to either a broken belt or lots of carpet fibers or pet fur in the beater bar mechanism. turn it off, unplug it and then turn it on it’s side and check to see if the bar turns freely by hand. if it does, you will have to replace the belt assembly…. most dyson’s have the belt built in to a plastic housing forcing you to buy a pricey part. I have a Hoover Windtunnel vacuum cleaner and new high pile carpet. The vacuum cleaner will not move forward without extreme effort. I have been told that I need a vacuum without a beater bar and that the beater bar can be disengaged. How do I accomplish that?
Thanks
ANSWER : You can adjust the height on some vacumes like for bare floors and medium nap it will adjust how far the beater bar is from the carpet see if your is adjustable

I had a shoelace get stuck in the beater bar. I turned it off, tipped it over and untangled the shoelace from the beater bar. When I plugged it back in the vacuum ran but the beater bar was not turning and there wasn’t any suction. Is there a reset switch for the beater bar? Thank you for your help, Janet
ANSWER : Hi Janet. there is a small reset button on the outside of the head next to the brush that you can push to get it to start spinning again.

The beater bar on my Dyson won’t turn. The vacuum runs and suctions but the bar won’t turn and the belt is not broke. The beater bar did get a carpet fiber caught and wrapped around it which stopped the bar and I removed the bar to cut the fiber loose and replaced it and now it won’t turn
ANSWER : The belt doesn’t have to be broken to make the vacuum not work correctly. If the belt is stretched the vacuum won’t operate the way it is supposed to. You can get replacement Dyson Belts here:

My dyson dc14 wont turn on at all – Dyson DC14 All Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner
ANSWER : Hi I would suggest you first check the Fuse in the plug. This is quite common.
.
.If after chnaging the fuse the machine still doesnt work then please come back to us. Let us know that you have checked the fuse andthe machine still wont switch on.
.
.Im confident it will only be the fuse. Unless you have had strange noises or funny smells coming from the machine.

We have a dyson dc14 and the beater bar stopped turning, we cleaned the bar off and checked the belt and it’s not broken, I know I called Dyson a year or two ago and they told me how to reset the beater bar motor but I don’t remember exactly what I did, anyone know the answer to this??? thanks in advance….
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

Check that the brush control dial is in the centre position when the machine is locked upright. When you release the head and pull the handle back this dial should mopve forward to the on position. Once here, the brush bar should turn.

If this doesnt resolve the problem, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards
