How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The spinning brush opens the carpet fibers to allow cleaning at the base, as well as removing embedded hairs.
Beater Bars

Many vacuums feature a rotating brush, known as a beater bar, which is designed to agitate the carpet fibers to help loosen soil deep in the pile. This feature is helpful in many cut-pile carpets but can be damaging to certain styles.

Use the dust brush attachment – close the blind slats so they lie flat and vacuum. Reverse the blinds so that the slats are lying the other way and repeat. Repeat monthly or as needed. Use the upholstery attachment on mattresses and fabric surfaces.
The bristle guard separates hair from the brushroll until an integrated comb actively removes the hair from the bristles. Hair is sucked up into the dust cup, leaving the brushroll ready to deep-clean.
To turn off the beater bar on most vacuums, you will need to locate the beater bar control switch, which is usually located on the body of the vacuum or on the handle. Once you have found the switch, you can either slide it to the “off” position or flip it to the “off” position, depending on the design of the switch.
The powerful airflow from the vacuum can help shake dirt and debris loose and pull them into the vacuum. Without the fan, a vacuum couldn`t work at all. But the roller brush is critical, too. It`s necessary in dislodging deep dirt and stuck debris, and it helps clear a path for air to carry dirt into the vacuum.
Suction Power

This is an indication of how good the vacuum cleaner is to clean – i.e. the work to be done. The suction power is measured in Watt (W) and is typically between 250 W and 450 W for machines with 1 motor.

Easy to Use. The one-piece design of upright vacuums makes them easier to move from room to room. Rather than bending down to deal with the canister, the handle on upright vacuums lets you push, pull, or carry the whole device with a single hand.
A beater bar is a rotating brush that is typically found on upright vacuum cleaners. It is designed to agitate carpets and loosen dirt and debris, making it easier for the vacuum to pick up. The beater bar is usually located at the base of the vacuum and is powered by an electric motor.
In some models the vacuum head contains an electrically powered brush roller. In other models no brush roller or power is present. Canister vacuums have become a popular replacement for back pack style vacuums since they have similar components.
Get started by wetting your bar of soap or squirting a few drops of liquid soap onto your palm or a brush-washing mat. Then, using lukewarm to warm water, wet the bristles of a dirty brush. Using a gentle circular motion, rub the brush head directly into the soap for about 15 seconds, to loosen any product buildup.
Brushes. According to iRobot, brushes should be replaced every 6-12 months. Robot vacuums like the iRobot Roomba j7+ have multiple brushes that allow it to clean.
On/Off Brushroll: turn brushroll `on` for carpeted surfaces and `off` for hard floor cleaning. 10″ Nozzle: provides a path for quick clean-ups. Lightweight Design: easy transportation from room-to-room and up-and-down stairs.
If your vacuum is set too high above the carpet surface, the vacuum can`t attract the gritty soil below. If the setting is too low, the vacuum`s beater bar or brushes can “fuzz” the carpet`s surface, causing it to look worn or frayed.
When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust. Regular filters can`t remove these harmful particulates and this puts the people in your home at risk.
Brushed DC motors work by having the coil rotate inside the surrounding magnets. The rotation of the coil causes the contact between commutator and brush to alternate, therefore switching the current flow through the coil. As a result, the brushed DC motor can operate.
A carbon brush, also known as a motor brush, is the small part of the motor that conducts electrical current between the stationary wires (stator) and the rotating wires (rotor) of a motor or generator. The brush is typically made up of one or more carbon blocks and can come with one or more shunts or terminals.
Vacuum pulls the slurry through a cloth belt and then through a rubber drainage belt. It is then pulled though the rubber drainage belt into a vacuum pan and into vacuum manifolds that separate the liquid from air.
The first, and arguably most important, part of the vacuum cleaner is the suction motor. This is what creates the vacuum pressure and suction power by utilizing a rotating motor fan.
Essentially, the system is comprised of four main components: the main vacuum unit, pipes and inlets, a vacuum hose, and cleaning tools. The vacuum hose and cleaning tools are what you – the consumer – will most directly interact with. They`re pretty familiar and work just as they would on any vacuum cleaner.
Vacuum is primarily measured by its absolute pressure. At room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, one cubic foot (0.03 cubic m) of air contains approximately 7×1023 molecules moving in random directions and at speeds of around 1,000 miles per hour.
What is a vacuum and how is it measured? Vacuum is an air pressure measurement that is less than Earth`s atmospheric pressure, about 14.7 psi.
“We would recommend vacuuming at least once or twice a week—and more often if we have pets—with the right tools to remove dust quickly and effectively,” Patel advises.

I had a shoelace get stuck in the beater bar. I turned it off, tipped it over and untangled the shoelace from the beater bar. When I plugged it back in the vacuum ran but the beater bar was not turning and there wasn’t any suction. Is there a reset switch for the beater bar? Thank you for your help, Janet
ANSWER : Hi Janet. there is a small reset button on the outside of the head next to the brush that you can push to get it to start spinning again.

My Dyson DC17 beater bar motor works intermittedly. I have to almost whack it on the floor to turn it on and then shuts off again. I have checked the belt and it is fine, also have checked for blockages. The switch to turn the beater bar on or off will not work when the beater bar motor is off. the suction is fine though.
ANSWER : Buy a Kenmore for less money

Windtunnel first one used 6 times beater bar stopped working, took apart cleaned and belt was fine. this one had a reset switch for beater bar. had insurance at best buy so returned for a new one. used 2x beater bar not working and not dirty, no reset switch on this one., now back to the store for another? i don’t even want the same one. I wonder how many they are gonna give me. This seems to be a common occurance.
ANSWER : Sorry, you feel like that. I have rentals and 6 windtunnel’s (I prefer the bagged ones) and have never had a problem such as you have described. I think Hoover makes a great vacuum.

The beater bar motor doenst work when i push the bar button the bar button doesnt light up like power button how can i test bar motor or bar switch or what is the common problem wiyh this model I have 2 that dont work the same way
ANSWER : If it do not work …and you already are on the second one that behaved in the same way it may be a problem with the power in your place and the cause it may be the main fuse…Im not sure where is located in this model but it has to be near the power cord entry …Anyway ..to check the power flow you have to open it without breaking the power flow …and than plug int and push the start ..and with a power checker (screwdriver like that checks the presence of the electric power ) or a voltmeter ..or other measurement device …check the power flow from the entry to the motor…..this way you will see if the power is present …if all seam to be ok ..even at the contact point at the motor…it means that this is damaged …and for electric motors the usually damage are the coil magnetos …

I ran my vacuum against an area rug that has strings around it and a few strings got caught up in the beater bar. Now, the beater bar does not function- the motor runs but the beater bar does not seem to be operating. I removed the strings from the bar.
ANSWER : Hi,
.
.There is a switch next to the main power switch on the handle which turns the brushbar on and off. When the beater bar becomes obstructed as in your case, there is a safety feature which cuts power to the beater bar. All that needs to be done in most cases is to turn this switch off and back on again and the beater bar should resume operation.
.
.The beater bar on / off / reset switch is the yellow switch to the left of the main power button if you are standing in front of the hoover:

The beater bar on my Dyson won’t turn. The vacuum runs and suctions but the bar won’t turn and the belt is not broke. The beater bar did get a carpet fiber caught and wrapped around it which stopped the bar and I removed the bar to cut the fiber loose and replaced it and now it won’t turn
ANSWER : The belt doesn’t have to be broken to make the vacuum not work correctly. If the belt is stretched the vacuum won’t operate the way it is supposed to. You can get replacement Dyson Belts here:

Beater bar not working on Halo vacuum
ANSWER : Check the bar to see if there is a buildup of hair or string causing it to jam,

I purchased a Eureka C4910 last year and have a question that I am hoping you can answer.

There are two motor actions with this vacuum, 1) the vacuum suction, and 2) the beater bar. The action of the beater bar is that motor is supposed to automatically shut off when the handle is in the complete vertical position assuming the vacuum is stationary, but then turn on when the handle is tilted toward the floor, assuming the vacuum is moving back and forth.

The beater bar motor turn-on mechan

ANSWER : Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that’s why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.
