How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The most common cause of vacuum cleaner not picking up dirt properly is clogged air filter. Remove the filter and either clean or replace it as needed.
What`s happening with your vacuum cleaner is that a clog has built up and debris being agitated by the roller is spitting out or stirring up dust without sucking it in.
Can you just vacuum with the Bissell CrossWave cordless Max? You can absolutely use the bissell crosswave as just a vacuum. It works well to clean messes on hard or soft surfaces by vacuuming and mopping, but it can be used as just a vacuum.
The dust particles and other debris move to the outside of the vessel by centrifugal force, where they fall due to gravity. In fixed-installation central vacuum cleaners, the cleaned air may be exhausted directly outside without need for further filtration.
Instead, sticks vacs are powered by a compact, yet powerful motor which sucks and traps the dirt into a canister, cup, or bag.
Regular vacuuming removes soil and dirt that can damage the carpet fiber and therefore reduce the useful life of the carpet.
Check area on the inside of the unit for suction without removing the filter. If there is suction, it would indicate that the hose is clogged or filters are dirty. If still no suction, please take the unit to an Authorized Service Center to have a Quality Technician inspect the unit.
Yes you can just vacuum but is is best to put some water in the dirty tank to help draw the dust and dirt into it. The CrossWave is designed to be used as a vac and mop. For ultimate performance it is best when using both.
No, it is not recommended to be used as a regular vacuum. Sorry, there was a problem.
Dump the Dust

If your vacuum has a disposable bag, remove and discard it. For vacuums that use a plastic canister, remove the bin and dump the contents in the trash.

Bagless vacuums, as the name suggests, don`t use a replaceable bag that collects the dust and dirt from the surface. A bagless vacuum cleaning machine is compact and uses a dust cup or chamber to store the dust and dirt. The dust cup used in the vacuum cleaner can be easily emptied and cleaned.
Roomba® uses Dirt Detect™ Technology, which allows it to focus its cleaning effort in dirtier areas. When your robot finds more dirt than usual concentrated in one (1) area, it will activate Dirt Detect™ and work harder to clean the same area until the sensors detect fewer particles in that particular area.
Old-style vacuums would kick up so much dust that dusting was done last. But today`s airtight vacuums with multiple filters (often a HEPA filter that traps at least 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 microns) capture small dust particles efficiently, so it`s more productive to vacuum a room as the last step.
But vacuuming alone is not enough to remove the ground-in dirt, stains, and allergens that cling to oily upholstery and carpet fibers and many sprays & foams only attack the stain`s surface (the part of the stain that is visible on top of the carpet).
Your dirty water tank may not be secured tightly. Check the rubber tab on the dirty water tank and press firmly on all edges to secure it tightly. The accessory hose door also needs to be closed securely. Check the door and make sure it is locked in place.
Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
To fix a clog in the hose, feed one end into a garbage bag, and poke the other end with the back of a mop pole, until you push the clog material out into the garbage bag. To fix a clog in the vacuum, whether it is a canister or bag, use your finger to feel for a clog. Pull as much of it out as you can and discard.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
There could be several factors as to why your BISSELL PowerFresh steam mop is not producing steam. First, check to make sure the unit is plugged in and is in a working outlet. Next, check to make sure there is water in the tank. It is very important to make sure you are ONLY using water to fill the tank.
If you`re wondering whether you can use the Bissell Crosswave without water, the answer is yes!
You can also clean out the hose by getting our HydroRinse™ Self-Cleaning Hose Tool, it helps clean the hose by rinsing out unwanted dirt, pet hair and lingering odor. No matter how you clean the lines, it`s also a good idea to rinse all tanks and tools and let them air dry after each use.
We are no stranger to the benefits of HEPA at BISSELL. In fact, we have several products built with HEPA technology, including two HEPA filter vacuums and three HEPA filter air purifiers.

Our Bissell Cleanview II 3576M does a great job except that the filter cup below the dirt cup gets full very fast and the dirt cup barely has anything in it. To clean the whole house, I have to empty the dirt cup and clean the filter several times. It didn’t use to work this way. It seems like something is missing, a gasket or seal maybe? I don’t think dirt, hair and debris should be going straight to the lower cup and bypassing the upper. I looked at the user guide but can’t see why it’s happen

Bissell bagless sweeper sucks up dirt but will not put dirt in the canister cup. It will pickup until it clogs, then it will stop picking up dirt. It will really hold quite a bit of dirt before it stops completely up. Thanks for any help.
ANSWER : I had the same problem, called Bissell over 10 times! They send me 3 plastic inserts for the dirt chamber, not the problem. I solved it by throwing the Bissell away and buying a Eureka bagged vacuum, no more problems.

Bissell 3595-2 Where is dirt going?
ANSWER : If the dirt isn’t going into the dirt tank, then you have a clog either in the hose, or the dirt inlet by the brush roll. Clogged filters can cause suction problems also, they need to be cleaned often.

Dirt finder I have a Hoover U6439-900.  After the cleaner was used a few times, the dirt finder light cycles between green and red on the regular setting and will not go to green.  On the sensitive setting, the red light stays on most of the time.  I have tried to run the cleaner to remove any dirt but have not solved the problem.
ANSWER : The sensor may be bad, or it may be coated over with dirt. Re,ove the hose at the back of the vacuum, the head of the sensor is down inside that opening, reach in there and clean it off and see it that corrects the problem, if not replace the sensor.
