How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your machine is making an abnormally loud noise it is likely due to the belt slipping or the brush roll being incorrectly installed, follow these steps to resolve: Turn off and unplug machine. Use a Phllips-head screwdriver to remove 3 screws, 2 in the belt cover and 1 on the brush roll mount. Remove belt cover.
You may be hearing excessive noise because your filters are dirty. To clean them, watch our Cleaning Filters video. A damaged Brush Roll could also be the problem. To fix, first make sure your vacuum is turned OFF and unplugged.
If the fan is loose on the assembly, tighten it with a ratchet. As the motor cranks, a loose fan makes a rattling sound. Clean the engine`s frame of dirt and grime. Large amounts of dirt or dust in the vicinity of the motor might cause it to overheat, resulting in vibration and loud noise.
Vacuum cleaners are typically loud because of the way they operate. They work by creating suction and using a motor to power a fan that pulls air and dirt into the vacuum`s collection chamber. The noise produced by a vacuum cleaner is primarily caused by the motor and the fan.
For something that`s designed to be used in a household with pets, the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet is incredibly loud. Our sound meters showed us that this carpet cleaner produces about 86 dBA while active.
Sound enclosures, noise reduction blankets, sound curtain noise barriers, or sound barrier walls are a few options to consider when reviewing noise reduction materials. If the vacuum pump is indoors, a noise enclosure would be the recommended solution.
Vacuum cleaners with a noise level between 71 and 75dB are loud. If you want to have a conversation with someone 2m away, you`ll have to raise your voice significantly. You also won`t be able to hear the TV without turning up the volume. We consider more than 76dB of noise very loud.
Living room music (76 dB); radio or TV-audio, vacuum cleaner (70 dB).
Vacuum cleaners have a decibel rating that ranges from approximately 64dB to 80dB. Most vacuums fall in the 70dB to 80dB range, with uprights tending to be the loudest.
An average vacuum cleaner can produce up to 70 decibels of noise. A carpet cleaner is much, much louder. In our tests, the average noise level was 80 dBA. (In decibels, a reading of 80 is twice as loud as 70.)
It is recommended to clean or replace your filters every 3-6 months depending on use. This filter is washable – Clean by hand washing in warm water.
While bagless uprights may be a bit louder and heavier than their more expensive counterparts, they tend to come with all the essential attachments and features to clean your carpet.
If there is a vacuum , then simply the sound waves cannot travel through the medium because there will be no vibrations at all . This is particularly because there is no material medium ! It is hence said that we cannot hear sound in vacuum. Thus the loudness of the sound would be zero .
Bissell Pet Stain Eraser PowerBrush Plus

Those are the times when a lightweight portable carpet cleaner is a practical solution. In our most recent test of this category, this Bissell model was our best overall winner for stain and odor removal, sound, run time and more, outperforming the larger models we tested.

While extreme suction power may offer peace of mind to homeowners who want to feel confident that their vacuums are effective at sucking up dirt and germs, it can be very damaging to your carpet and should be avoided! For high pile and premium soft carpet, be sure to avoid vacuums with concentrated or sealed suction.
Noisy Motor

The motor may be dirty and needs cleaning. Your belt drive may be faulty. The fan may be loose or damaged. Parts in the motor may be wearing out.

This means it is best to choose a vacuum cleaner with a noise output that is less than 70 dB. However, the noise levels of vacuum cleaners fall between 75dB to 85dB. Thus, continuous exposure to such noise levels affect a user`s health while also being a sign and source of inefficiencies in the equipment.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

ANSWER : If the filter bag is bad and didn’t trap all of the dust, then it got into your motor, so you may have a problem with your motor now.

Loud noise?? my vacuum suddenly just got really loud. it suctions fine, i changed the belt, but when the roller is off its not loud, but when i put it back on the 11noise is horrific. it vacuums fine i just cannot stand the noise. please help
ANSWER : I have the exact same problem. I’ve taken the thing apart and cannot figure out what is causing the noise. It’s not the belt and it doesn’t seem to be coming from the engine. It sounds like the spinning brush is hitting something, but it’s not, that I can see.

Loud noise I have a brand new Dyson and it is great on all my floors except one of my area rugs when it starts making this really loud vibrating noise. I am not sure why – nothing is stuck in the roller or vacuum and it doesn’t make it on any of my other rugs. Also it is really hard to push whereas all the other floors it just glides. I don’t want to return it but I also don’t want to hear this sound every time I vacuum.
ANSWER : This is the clutch as it jams up in the brush. Usually happens with rugs that are not secured to the floor.

My eureka vacuum was fine but then suddenly got loud. We cleaned the filters and replaced the belts, but it is still loud. We have not seen any clogs in the tubing or in the vacuum. What other problems could the vacuum have to make it loud?
ANSWER : The noise could be coming from the Beater Bar’s ball bearings.

I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner – MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I’ve had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. I checked with different outlets, used both front attachment and hose attachment. Checked the front part of the motor/ spiral case. This

Vacuum problem i have a bissell total floor velocity and everytime i turn it on it makes this really loud noise like it’s about to exploded. We changed the belt but that wasn’t the problem and we just bought the vacuum a little over a year ago.
ANSWER : Check the brush roll, do the ends turn freely, if not, replace it. Could have a clog in the hose or the dirt inlet by the brush roll, the other could be a bad motor.
