How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
If your vacuum motor appears to cut out when it`s warm for a few minutes before restarting, it may be due to the motor overheating. This may be caused by blocked filters. They can become clogged over time from a buildup of dust molecules, preventing less or no cool air to flow into the motor.
If the unit runs for a few minutes then shuts off, the motor needs to be replaced. Central vacuum motors generally last for 800-1100 working hours. If your motor has run less than 800 hours or activates by jolting the canister, it may be possible to extend the life of the motor by replacing the carbon motor brushes.
The vacuum has a safety feature that turns off the vacuum when the vacuum gets to a certain high temperature or overheats. This happens because the vacuum has a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum turns off due to overheating, the thermostat has to be reset before you can use it again.
Overheating usually occurs because the dust bag has not been emptied, filter has not been cleaned or there is a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bent hand piece. If your vacuum shuts down unexpectedly, make sure you turn the vacuum off and unplug it from the wall socket.
Overheated Motor

If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
check for leaks or kinks in the tubing. ensure the filter is not wet (keep a backup filter with your supplies) ensure the float shut-off is not activated (if this is part of your suction machine) check for canister leaks and cracks.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
Shark vacuum brush not spinning is a common issue. The problem occurs mainly due to blockage, damaged belts, unemptied dust cups, or loose nozzles.
Vacuum cleaners are often designed to turn themselves off if they hit a thermal cut-off point. Basically, if the machine is starting to overheat, there is an automatic system in place to prevent damage to your vacuum or other issues. The most common cause of overheating is blockage.
Check Your Battery & Charger:

Batteries don`t last forever depending on age and use. You may need to buy a new battery if your Dyson vacuum is turning on and off after only a few minutes of use.

If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
Economical, high-visibility acrylic vacuum chambers are ideal for most manufacturing, testing, and research applications. Terra`s 1” thick welded acrylic (plexiglass) vacuum chambers hold a full vacuum (29.9″Hg) for 72 hours with no detectable leaks.
The time allowed for decay depends upon the size of the system, but generally, 10 minutes minimum with 1 minute added per ton is a good guideline. The moral of the story is this: A proper evacuation may take 15 minutes, 15 hours, or 15 days, it simply takes what it takes.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle). Some manufacturers show the results from measurements made at the suction of the actual vacuum cleaner.
Suction pressure should be kept at less than 200 mmHg in adults. It should be set at 80 mmHg to 120 mmHg in neonates.

One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.

Bosch BSA2222UC canister vacuum shuts off after 5 minutes
ANSWER : I took apart the vacuum, removed the circuit board and cleaned the tiny bits of dust off it carefully, removed the cord winder (without letting it unwind) and carefully replaced both parts, blew dust out of the 2 armature brushes (lifted out the motor, removed the insulation wrap from around it and the 2 rubber gaskets first), then re-wrapped the insulation, replaced the motor, put it all back together making sure the switch was aligned properly, and ran it without the filters, hose, etc, until I was convinced it would stay on without impedance, then added one filter, then another, then the bag, then the hose and lastly the floor head. It never shut off so I think that small amount of dust on the circuit board was the problem. Hope this helps.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.
.
.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Rainbow e2 2 speed vacuum shuts off after 5 minutes of vacuuming.
ANSWER : 2 speed E2 models have a circuit board inside that controls the machine. It sounds like this controller board may be bad. The unfortunate part of this is that the board is not only very expensive, but it is only available from an authorized Rainbow service center.
. Use caution if you decide to work on this yourself or if you take it to a service center that is not famliar with these models. The circuit board mentioned above is susceptible to damage from static eclectricity discharge. The static you generate from just walking across a carpet could make this board useless. So, if the original problem is not the board you could make the problem worse.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I HAVE A BRAND NEW HOOVER MACH-3 CYCLONIC THAT CUTS OFF EVERY FEW MINUTES. IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! IT’S LIKE AFTER 5 MINUTES OF VACUUMING IT HAS TO SIT FOR A LEAST AN HOUR THEN YOU CAN VACUUM FOR ANOTHER 5 MINUTES. HELP!
ANSWER : If it were mine and it was brand new I would bring it back and exchange it. It sounds like the motor is over heating and shutting off automatically. Does not sound good. My advice return it.

When we turn on the vacuum, the canister falls open. The clips holding the canister in place do not seem to hold the canister tightly which I’m sure that it did in the past. The clips do not look bent, but every time we turn on the vacuum the intense pressure blows the canister open only remaining attached the the rest of the vacuum by one clip
ANSWER : Check filter and make sure it is kept clean at regular intervals. Possibly worn out clip retainers on cannister side due to excessive pressure build up. Do not force closure unless pressure is back to normal. May crack cannister or damage unit beyond repair.

Kenmore 26082 Canister Vacuum Shuts off constantly. When Im vaccuuming maybe about 5 minutes later it shuts off. Then give it a few minutes later it turns back on. Whats the problem with this vaccuum
ANSWER : You could have a clog in the hose. Also check your filters, if you haven’t changed them in a while, that could be what’s suffocating your motor
