How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The major types of vacuum belts are determined by their different shapes. As vacuum designs have improved over the years, new belt shapes have been developed to increase both their durability and their ability to transfer power from the vacuum`s motor.
Have you ever broken a belt on your vaccuum and didn`t have a chance to buy a new one? You can make your own out of duct tape for a TEMPORARY fix. This belt is for TEMPORARY USE ONLY, you might damage your vaccuum if you overuse this belt.
Kevlar belts will hold up better in high shock load drives that have frequent starting/stopping and multiple directional changes. Standard belts are best suited for smooth operating drives with consistent speeds and low loads.
Multi-ribbed V-belts are much thinner than their chunkier V-belt brethren. Not only does the thinner design help save material, but the belt itself also generates less heat while offering better flexibility. The multiple ribs also offer a better grip, reducing power-robbing slippage.
Often, a belt breaks because the machine is running over the edge of a rug or other thick items, perhaps even the vacuum cord. This causes “snagging.” When this happens, the belt becomes stuck and usually overheats. Unfortunately, this results in immediate breakage.
Disadvantages of V-belt drive

The V-belt drive cannot be used for long distances due to greater weight per unit of length. They are not applicable to the synchronous machines because they are not free from creep. The centrifugal tension prevents the use of belts at speeds below 5 m/s and above 50 m/s.

As we`ve discussed, rubber belts are often the better option for general applications on heavy industrial machinery and drilling equipment. Meanwhile, Kevlar models are great for high-powered devices that are exposed to harmful conditions.
V-belts are used because of their ability to wedge tightly into the grooves of the pulley. This breaks higher surface friction, reducing slip and power loss.
There are three common V belt types: Classical V-belt (classified by their dimensions from A to E), Narrow V series (ranked by their sizes 3V, 5V, and 8V), and light-duty Fractional Horsepower belt (classified by their dimensions 2L, 3L, 4L, 5L). The letter X classifies their counterpart cogged belt.
Designed for light and heavy duty use on lawn and garden, home, farm, shop or industrial applications, Dayco GPL Premium Utility V-Belts operate efficiently when subjected to temperature extremes, high humidity, moisture, grit, oil and grease. Aramid fiber cord protects against shock loading and stabilizes belt length.
You should replace the belts on your vacuum at least every three to six months if the vacuum is regularly used. This is very important for proper cleaning.
(All full-sized machines, upright vacuums and canister vacuums, typically have a belt.) A vacuum will still create suction with a bum belt, but without a rotating brush roller, it won`t collect much in the way of dirt and debris, especially on carpets.
Should the brush not rotate freely there may be debris tangled around the ends of the brush, carefully remove any obstructions or replace the brush with a new one. We recommend that you fit a new belt and brush once per year to keep your Reactive vacuum working efficiently.
If too much hair, string, or lint is caught in the brushroll, the brushroll can get stuck. If the brushroll is stuck, it will put too much strain on the belt and may cause the belt to break. Remove the brushroll and clean out any debris from the bearings. After replacing the brushroll, make sure that it turns freely.
A typical price for Vacuum Belts is $6 but can range from approximately $4.99 to $26.
Belt-drive bikes are a very attractive option for daily bike riding: they run quietly and the belts and cogs are durable. Most importantly, belts don`t need cleaning and lubrication, they don`t attract black crud from the street, and they`re lighter than chains. Plus, they`re cool!
At the end of the day, your preferences matter. If you want high-quality sound, consistent playback and a classic design, consider picking up a belt drive record player. If, however, you value durability, long-term play options and ease of use, consider the direct drive turntable.
Twaron is an extremely popular alternative to Kevlar. This product is tough, light, and resistant to harmful chemicals and high temperatures. It is often chosen for its ability to make ordinary products unbelievably durable. Twaron, generally, has the same chemical structure as Kevlar.
A new fiber, made by genetically engineered bacteria is stronger than steel and tougher than Kevlar. Spider silk is said to be one of the strongest, toughest materials on the Earth.
Synchronous belts are the most efficient choice. However, notched belts may be a better choice when vibration damping is needed or shock loads cause abrupt torque changes that could shear a synchronous belt`s teeth.
V-Belts usually should be inspected for wear after 3 years or 30-40,000 miles of use. According to belt manufacturers, failure rates rise sharply after 3 years of service. Replacing V-belts every 3-4 years can minimize the risk of sudden belt failure. Most cars on the road today have only one belt, a serpentine belt.
The efficiency of the V-belt drive is lower than Flat Belts by 2-3%. The power transmitting capacity of the Flat Belt Drive is low due to slip. The slip is very low, and friction is more in V-belt. Hence, the power transmitting capacity is more.
Both are used to transmit motion from one shaft to another with the help of a thin, in-extensible band that runs over at least two pulleys. It is important to select the right kind of belt drive. V- belts are better suited for high-speed applications while timing belts are better for high torque.

My vax power 8, 2200 watts 300 air watts 4L capacity upright Hoover is brand new, I emptied out the dust/dirt collecter and cleaned the motor filter yesterday for the first time, i switched it on and all fine, the brush is spinning and the hose is sucking, put the Hoover to work it’s fine for about 30 seconds then then suction stops and its dead it won’t collect no more, so switched off taken apart again and the motor filter is blocked and full of dust, so I unblocked it, do the same process aga
ANSWER : I had the same problem. It looks like the seal on the lid on the bottom of the cylinder has fallen out when it was emptied. There is no longer a proper vacuum being created so you don’t get the cyclone effect and the dirt doesn’t collect where its supposed to. it just clogs up the filter. I put sellotape to seal the lid and it works fine.

Bissell PowerForce Turbo: The motor spindle becomes very hot while spinning, causing the new belt to burn and break. Is this because the motor is overheating?
ANSWER : Something is preventing the brush roller from turning even though it seeems to be OK when not in contact with the floor. The motor shaft is spinning on one spot of the belt, causing the heating, the smell, and eventual belt failure. I have had brush rollers that appeared OK but proved to have pet hair jammed between the end caps and the roller itself causing rotation to be very difficult

DYson DC07 not sucking properly when in upright mode. I have tried cleaning out pipes etc and even tried an old motor section I had in garage (replaced once under warranty as kept cutting out and they left old motor section here). Even the old motor section had same prob so this suggests its something in the rest of the vacuum cleaner (whats left after you have lifted off the green motor section and dust collection area if you see what I mean? Any advice weclome please.

Need to replace motor on a Simplicity upright vacuum and need help with the wiring the new motor. New motor is different from old one.
ANSWER : You might not have the right motor. Take the old one with you because it should go right back in as easy it was to remove.

I have a Hoover, Steam spin scrub, Model F5897-900.
Only used it a couple times and the motor gave out.
First started being noisy then a bad smell. It did seem
noisier that what I would expect from the start but I
didn’t realize it was a problem with the shaft of the motor.
I took it apart and found the motor shaft wasn’t
true and causing sparks. The motor looks like it can
not be taken apart and repaired. This seems like a default from the beginning but it is past warranty. Also noti
ANSWER : You will have to replace the motor and the hose asm. thehooverstore.com may be able to help, or you should be able to find a repair shop that can order them for you.

Hoover windtunnel t series belt is loose- roller brush doesnt turn.
Its brand new belt is slipping. we bough new belts and putthem on same problem. Can not find solutio in manual.
Is the belt supposed to go around the “metal pulley”. I know it goes around the little metal motor thing, then thru the guide and around the brush.
What is the metal pulley??? Is is the larger round silver thing between the guide and roller?
ANSWER : I also have a loose belt and have bought additional belts but have the same problem. I put the it around the metal rotor and around the brush roller a shown by he Hoover video, and it is loose.

I was using my Henry Hoover as usual. When i sucked up quite a fair sized puddle of water. The hoover instantly cut out and a strange burning smell was coming from it. Would this be the fuse, motor etc ? Or would it be worth my while just replacing the entire hoover ?
ANSWER : Hi. I have to wonder why anyone would **** up a puddle of water with a dry vacuum cleaner (with no earth lead). I realise that your question may simply be a joke, but if you are serious, I think it is probably fair to assume that it is now dead and probably gone to “Henry Heaven”. Perhaps it would pay you to buy a “Charles” which is a wet & dry version of Henry.

Hetty hoover not working. It was working ok until I opened it up to search the bag for a missing jigsaw piece and I put it all back and I hoovered the mess on the floor, then switched off and switched on and hoover would not work? Is there a cut off button on Hetty hoovers?
ANSWER : Know cut off switch, its just not getting power ? 2 things its ether at the wall plug or in side the unit. I have never found a fuse in side them , so it may be just a lose wire did you try other plugs in the house . good luck DFD
