How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Q: What shampoo can I use in my Kirby? A: You should only use genuine Kirby Carpet Shampoo in Kirby shampoo systems. For a fragrance-free option, please try Kirby Unscented Carpet Shampoo!
Some of the best vacuum cleaners come with a standard attachment (like an extension wand or upholstery tool) that will help you get to those hard-to-reach spots or smaller nooks where crumbs and debris get trapped.
Use the dust brush attachment – close the blind slats so they lie flat and vacuum. Reverse the blinds so that the slats are lying the other way and repeat. Repeat monthly or as needed. Use the upholstery attachment on mattresses and fabric surfaces.
That`s because the Kirby isn`t just a vacuum. It`s a whole-home system capable of shampooing carpets, mopping hard floors, polishing hardwoods, and scrubbing tile and grout. Don`t waste your time and money on multiple machines when buying a Kirby is one machine, with so much clean.
On most Kirby vacuum cleaners, filtration is managed by the filter bag that is used to collect dust and debris. However, some models offer a secondary level of filtration in the form of a foam filter or a screen filter.
The Universal Carpet Head is one of the most widely used vacuum heads around the world. It`s supplied as the standard issue vacuum head with many brands of ducted and portable vacuum, and performs reliably on most carpets and hard floors.
Suction (or pull of air) is often referred to as water lift or vacuum. Suction is ultimately what gives a given volume of air its speed or velocity by the vacuum motor. The more suction you have, the quicker a given volume of air is moved. This volume of air I`m talking about is the airflow which I`ll discuss next.
To vacuum debris away from all in-ground pools, including vinyl pools.
A Brush for Dust

Identify a dust brush attachment by its circular or rectangular shape and long bristles. As the name suggests, this attachment is designed for dusting. Its long, soft hairs are gentle and won`t scratch surfaces. Use it on furniture, blinds, lampshades, workbenches, or the dashboard of the car.

Although using carpet shampoo and a steam cleaner takes less time and effort, you can also deep-clean carpet with a vacuum, household cleaners, and some elbow grease.
When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust. Regular filters can`t remove these harmful particulates and this puts the people in your home at risk.
Filters are a critical component of a vacuum system. Together, with a good motor and effective seals, good filtration is essential to the performance of a vacuum. Filters are also important in maintaining the air quality of the space within which you`re working.
Kirby vacuum prices are higher than many vacuums found at big-box stores, but that`s because Kirby vacuums are made of durable materials that will last for years. Why replace an inexpensive vacuum over and over again when you can purchase a Kirby vacuum? This complete home cleaning system that will last for a lifetime.
HQRP Vacuum Belt is designed to replace Kirby 301291 Belt or older part numbers 301282, 301289, 159056. Available in a convenient two-count package. Fits all Kirby Vacuum models that use a flat belt.
Q: It smells like the belt is burning. What is wrong? A:It is likely the belt isn`t turning freely on the brush roll. Flip out the belt lifter handle and turn it clockwise until the green arrows line up.
Good Housekeeping recommends you vacuum your mattress every three-to-six months, while other sources recommend mattress vacuuming on a monthly basis. If someone has allergies in your home, you may need to vacuum more frequently to remove dust and other allergens.
It`s heavy.

I just would not recommend this vacuum for older individuals or those suffering from arthritis. The reason why it is heavier is because it is mostly metal, whereas the Dyson is part metal, part plastic (well, I think the newer versions are more plastic than anything).

Kirby underwent extreme personality changes in his incarnation in There Will Be Brawl. He is a highly playful and malevolent creature with an extremely disturbing and rebarbative personality. He is pure evil and completely insane, but he is also cunning, intelligent, knowledgeable, and manipulative.
And in previous games with co-op multiplayer, Kirby can share that healing power with partner characters. Kirby does this by walking up to a character and giving them a little kiss after eating. It`s an adorable convention for the series during multiplayer. But in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, there`s no such kiss.
A vacuum cleaner is designed for dry debris and a carpet cleaner is for stains. For example, a carpet cleaner is better suited for a pet stain, but a vacuum should be used to tackle their loose fur. In instances where you need to clean a mixed medium like mud, it`s safer to use a carpet cleaner.
If your vacuum is set too high above the carpet surface, the vacuum can`t attract the gritty soil below. If the setting is too low, the vacuum`s beater bar or brushes can “fuzz” the carpet`s surface, causing it to look worn or frayed.
Vacuum up Liquids

Regular vacuum cleaners are not designed to pick up water and other liquids. If you are ever tempted to run the vacuum cleaner over a puddle of water, remember that you run the risk of electrocution and serious damage to the machine.

A shop vacuum`s ability to suck up water saves you from using towels to soak up water on the floor or trying to squeegee it away. A shop vacuum even acts as a pump to remove larger quantities of water standing in a tub, shower, pool, aquarium, or garden pond.
Vacuum is the total absence of air whereas suction is the process done to achieve a vacuum. Edit 1: Suction in a vacuum cleaner creates the vacuum. The surrounding air rushes to fill that vacuum created, thereby taking all the dirt particles with it. The air gushes very forcefully.

.How do I attach and use the shampooing attachment…
.Posted by rottylvr on May 08, 2008
.I have a Kirby Vacuum and Carpet Cleaner that I know how to use, all except the attachment that I am not sure about. I am not sure if it is a vacuuming attachment or can I attach it and use it to clean my couch, I do not have the user guide for my vacuum as I got it from my son’s ex girlfriend in lieu of money she owed me. It looks like it should be used for shampooing things like stairs and furniture, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out! Can you please help me? Tell me how to attach it if it is supposed to be used to clean stairs and furniture or tell me where I can find the user guide to look at and see how to use it……Oh by the way I have a 160 pound rottweiler that tries to live on my furniture and my couch is in desperate need of cleaning, this is my only day off and I have spent all day cleaning carpets due to my dog and would love to clean my couch before returning to work and putting my dog in the back yard now that it is warm enough for him to be outside all day.
Thanks,
Desperate to reclaim her couch

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. My suggestion is that you contact the Kirby Co in Cleveland listed below and they will instruct you either to down load a owner’s manual or they will mail one out to you, there might be a local Kirby dealer in your area that might have a manual as well. Also, there is a separate shampoo head that will be in the owner’s manual, you remove the vacuum head and bag assm and attach the shampoo head, make sure you use genuine Kirby shampoo for the carpet. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Kirby Sentria I bought my kirby sentria just before we were to move house and although I have the instructions somewhere, they will be boxed up and I so want to clean the carpets before I move. Problem is that I don’t know whether the belt should be on or off when using the big silver front with the Kirby insignia on it. I know that the green light should come on when it is working properly and it does not, so I am doing something wrong. I can attach the attachments no problem but I want to use
ANSWER : If the green light is off, then its time to replace the band. This video shows you how.

We lost our instructions to the Kirby Shampoo attachement and how to attach it to the main unit, the belt and how to use it. We need complete instructions and explanations on how to use this as we have tried and the belt does not attach to the main unit, the brush does not turn and the hops along the carpet and no water, etc. returns to the tray.
Please help us with as simple and complete instructions as possible.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH,
LOUIE CAPLAN
ANSWER : First, you’ll need to fill the tank with water (warm or cold). There are three fill lines on the side of the tank. Fill to the desired line and add one shampooer tank lid full of Kirby shampoo for each line of water. A full tank will require three lids full of shampoo.
Remove the outer cloth bag by rotating the bottom boot AWAY from the side of the main unit. Put the tank where the bag was, line up the notch (or may be a small arrow) on the tank with the notch on the Kirby near the hole. Set the tank down onto the Kirby and rotate it toward the Kirby to lock it on.
To remove the Kirby power nozzle, go to the front of the machine and turn the belt lifter clockwise until the red arrows line up. Turn the latch at the top to release the nozzle and take it off.
Make sure that the GREEN arrows on the hood’s belt lifter are lined up. Put the shampooer hood onto the tray, covering the shampooer brush and splash guard. The belt lifter should be FACING the hole in the center of the tray. While looking into the large hole in the rear of the shampooer hood, turn the belt lifter slowly and “hook” the belt with the belt lifter. Continue to turn it until the RED arrows on the top or the belt lifter line up. This stretches the belt to it’s highest position, preparing it for attachment to the main unit. This action also binds the hood to the tray. It may be a bit hard to turn, as the belt may be stiff if the shampooer isn’t used often.
Attach the shampooer assembly to the Kirby in the same manner as the power nozzle. (Put the little hooks on the hood onto the outside edges of the bar in the front, push it toward the Kirby and lock it on)
Now, turn the arrows back to green matching green. This will position your belt onto the drive shaft and make the nozzle ready to shampoo.
Lower the front of the Kirby to it’s lowest setting. You may raise it up one click if you have thick carpeting. Either one is fine.
Now, all that’s left to do is attach the tank to the tray using the hose. One end goes on the tank shampoo outlet which is located near the on off valve. The other end “pops” into the hole in the center of the tray.
Turn the Kirby on, turn the foam setting to “on” and lay the foam out onto the carpet by pushing FORWARD QUICKLY and BACKWARD SLOWLY. The foam is ONLY being laid out onto the carpet when the machine is going BACKWARD and wastes into the front tray when going forward, so going forward quickly uses less shampoo for the same job. The quantity of foam being deposited to the carpet is controlled by the speed of the backward movement. The slower you go, the thicker the foam.
Lay the foam out in strips, overlapping the edges a bit for good coverage. For tough stains, try going over the area in two different directions when laying the foam in that area. Don’t go over an area too many times though…it will get too wet and can cause a thick build-up of carpet protecter and soap. Pick up the foam by turning the shampoo valve back to “off”. Simply run the shampooer slowly and smoothly over the foam and it will pick it up and deposit it into the tray in the front.
Once you get the feel for the foam laying process, you should be able to do a whole room without emptying the tray. Make sure that you transition from forward to backward slowly and smoothly, especially as the tray fills up with dirty water. Jerky movements will cause the funk to slosh back out onto the clean rug.
PERSONAL ADVICE>>> I like to lay the foam in 3′ to 4′ square blocks and then pick it back up before moving on to the next area. This prevents the foam from being spread over too large an area. If it takes you too long to pick the foam up, it may dry out a bit and won’t do as good a job as when it’s fresh and damp.
Now that you’ve gotten this far, I imagine that you’re enough of a veteran to detach the shampooer and reassemble the vacuum. My advice in this area is for the shampooer cleaning process. Make sure that you release the belt from the hook by turning the belt lifter to GREEN before trying to seperate the hood from the tray. If you don’t do this, you’ll never get them apart.
If this guide was helpful to you,Thank you!

Kirby turns on with hose attachement but not with head attachment
ANSWER : Front of the unit, black switch that is pressed by this plastic protrusion from hose coupling has two parts. It is because ANY generation Kirby has speeds – HIGH for vacuuming with hose and LOW for using it with nozzle.
Looks like the switch went bad (Switch HERE)

We have instructions for replacing it too.
The “funny noise” with hose throws me off a bit though. Check if there is nothing in the hose (put a nickle through it).

Good Luck
