How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The canister portion of the vacuum contains the main motor, filter, and any dust bags; depending on the model, the power head may also contain a smaller motor.
If the vacuum cleaner stops suddenly, the filters should be checked to make sure that they are not blocked or that they require changing. This applies to both bagged and bagless models. Also check if the nozzle or hose are blocked.
Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
A canister is a strong metal container. It is used to hold gases or chemical substances.
The Benefits of Canister Vacuums

Canister vacuums, like the BGC3000, BGCOMP 9H and BGC2000, are generally more powerful than upright vacuums because there is no limit on the engine`s sizes. They also may lead to faster and easier cleaning because of their better flow-rate and suction, particularly on bare floors.

Vacuum Cleaner: Why doesn`t my vacuum cleaner`s brush roll spin? A broken drive belt, damaged brush roll, jammed brush roll bearings, tripped brush roll motor overload, failed brush roll motor or a wiring failure in the wand or nozzle can prevent the brush roll from spinning.
Overheated Motor

If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

Gravity and friction are the two main forces that make vacuum suction work. While gravity pulls molecules in the air toward the earth, creating an atmospheric pressure, the suction cup and vacuum pump cause a pressure difference, attaching both surfaces.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Rather than waiting for the canister to fill up all the way, the Vacuum Experts suggest you empty it after every use. If that`s not feasible, “empty the vacuum once it reaches half to two-thirds of the way full as a matter of habit,” the Vacuum Experts blog post recommends.
Drum Vacuum Cleaners

A Drum Vacuum Cleaner is similar to a Canister Vacuum Cleaner, but it is bigger and more powerful. It is usually a vertical cylindrical drum with a separate vacuum head attached to the main unit with a flexible hose.

Canister vacuum, as soon as hose is on, or air flow is disturbed, the vacuum shuts off. yesterday the vacuum sucked up tree netting, we pulled it out, and now the vacuum has those symptoms.
ANSWER : This is most likely due to a broken or worn out Control Valve Assembly located inside the vacuum.
.First, check the bag and afterfilter. If bag is full or pores are clogged, or the afterfilter is dirty, replace them. Try using the vacuum.
.Next, try turning the control knob on top of the vacuum counter-clockwise as far as it will go. Turn on vacuum. If it continues running, try vacuuming a room to see if it continues without problems. If not, disconnect hose and turn on. If your vacuum shuts off immediately, then the CVA needs replaced.
.If it continues running, place the palm of your hand over the intake. If it turns off, the problem could be the CVA, or simply dirty or clogged tubing connected to the CVA.
.If you’re using bags that are made to fit, and/or don’t say Home Solutions on the top, the interior of the canister, including the moter and cordwinder, is probably covered with dust.
.
.Depending on the model and age of your vacuum, unless “made-to-fit” bags were used, it may still be under warranty. To find out check your owner’s manual or go to http://www.aerusvacuums.com/support/manuals/, find your vacuum model, and check near the back of the manual for length of warranty. This of course depends on the purchase date.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

I have a central vacuum system. When I disconnect the hose from a wall outlet the central canister does not shut down dispite my turning off the vacuum at the handle of the hose. The only way I can get the system to shut down is to pull the plug at the canister.

What gives?

Rob

ANSWER : What I’m hearing is the canister(Not the Powerhead) portion of the unit is running all the time unless you unplug it. this problem could be caused by a short in one of your low voltage lines running through the house. To determine that just unplug one/both low voltage lines from the canister, and plug it back into the recepticle. If it doesn’t start up then you figured out that it is in the house somewhere and not the unit. If it is in the house I would check for water in the valves, or you’re just gonna have to chase down the short. If the unit is still running with the low voltage wires disconnected then it is probably the relay on the board, which means you will need a new board unless you’re expereinced at soldering and want give it a try replacing just the relay. Which you’ll probably need a new board by the time you’re done anyhow. LOL
.
.Good Luck

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.
.
.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

When we turn on the vacuum, the canister falls open. The clips holding the canister in place do not seem to hold the canister tightly which I’m sure that it did in the past. The clips do not look bent, but every time we turn on the vacuum the intense pressure blows the canister open only remaining attached the the rest of the vacuum by one clip
ANSWER : Check filter and make sure it is kept clean at regular intervals. Possibly worn out clip retainers on cannister side due to excessive pressure build up. Do not force closure unless pressure is back to normal. May crack cannister or damage unit beyond repair.
