Vacuums\015 Kenmore Central vac was used by kids and started smoking alot. Still good suction, but noisy and metal pieces came out of exhaust outside. Upon disassembly, found smoke was from gasket between motor/fan assembly and the canister. Metal shards loose inside suction fan portion of motor assembly. Cooling fan on motor is fine. I think metal pieces are from some casing around the fan, but I don’t know how to get to the fan to check it out. Any ideas?\015

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Central vacuum systems work by creating powerful suction using a motor located in a remote area, such as a basement or garage. This motor is much larger and more potent than traditional portable vacuums.
Central vacuums are larger and often produce more powerful suction than portable vacuum systems. Typically, they have about three to five times more suction power than conventional vacuum units. You don`t have to drag the main vacuuming unit around with you.
A canister vacuum and a central vacuum system are similar in the sense that the central vacuum system looks much like a huge canister. Canister vacuums are much smaller and allow for versatility and mobility. Despite their small size, they have a lot of suction power.
They need power to be transmitted to the vacuum to create a suction force that lifts debris. So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
Central vacuums can be equipped with either an electrical power brush or an air-driven power brush. The air-driven (or turbine) systems are frequently less expensive since they do not require electrical wires for power to be run to each wall inlet.
Central Vacuums Reduce Allergies and Help Air Quality

Because dust and allergens are sucked out of the room and into an area that is separate from your living space. You`ll also produce less leftover dust in your home`s air because you won`t have to empty the unit on a frequent basis.

The pros of a central vacuum system:

More powerful than portable vacuums with 3-5 times more suction power. Central vacuum systems are quieter as the motorized suction unit is located away from living areas. No risk of dirt and debris getting blown back out of the unit, resulting in healthier indoor air quality.

It doesn`t stir up dust like a broom, and is a lot less troublesome than trying to use a portable vacuum outside. Men also prefer central vacs to portable vacuums and are 80% more likely to vacuum with a central vacuum, because “It feels more like a power tool than a household appliance.”
While different factors affect how long a system lasts, many central vacuums can last 20-30 years, or even longer, depending on how often they are used.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Depending on how often you use the appliance, central vacuum canisters need emptying every three to six months, but you may need to check it more frequently. The first thing you should do when you notice that your vacuum is losing suction is to check the canister and filter.
Will a dedicated electrical circuit be required for a central vacuum power unit installation? Yes. It must be either a 15 amp or 20 amp circuit depending on the specific power unit you are installing.
As a central vacuum manufacturer we use the 120 and 240 volt motors. The 120 and 240 motors will not be adversely affected if used with lower voltages. The 120 volt motor will be fine on 110 volts. Likewise, a 240 volt motor will be fine on 220 or 230 volts.
The amount of power used by a central vacuum system is roughly the same as that of a portable vacuum cleaner. Yet, it has 3 to 5 times the power of a portable vacuum cleaner. You are getting more suction power, which translates into more efficient cleaning, at no extra energy usage.
As a result, this central vacuum is extremely versatile and constantly powerful. Maintenance-wise, using a dust bag has its benefits. With a bag, it is easier to get rid of all the dirt (unless you own an Automatik) : the only thing to do is to throw the bag once it is full and that`s all there is to it.
But to completely remove those dangerous particles, it is recommended that all central vacuums be vented outside. Venting is a simple and relatively inexpensive process to guarantee to your customer that their living space can be dust and allergen free.

Central vac our central vac will not work unless the main vac in the garage is switched on manualy…. its sucking fine but i have to switch it off at the main switch in the garage after i have used it normaly i just plug in the hose and vac away and it switches itself off we have just had cable installed with a fisher guy in the walls do you think that would be the problem thanks a lot
ANSWER : It is possible that the low voltage wiring that controls your central vacuum has been damaged during the cable work. You can check to see if the low voltage relay is working by shorting the two terminals together at the unit. Just disconnect the two small (18-22 gauge) wires from the unit and short across the terminals where the wires connect. If the unit comes on, the vacuum is fine, and it is most likely the low voltage control wires that have been damaged. It should be a pretty easy fix, if you can get to where the wires are located. They are probably just pulled apart at a joint. Good Luck!!

No suction I am getting no suction on my central vac at the vac. I do not believe that the piping is plugged up, the vacuum is not creating suction. What are the causes of no suction at the vacuum and how do I take the top half of the Nutone central vac off?
ANSWER : Use the guide at builtinvacuum.com/flowchrt.html to find the issue and solution. Most likely you need to test it without any filter and be sure the bottom of the unit is attached 🙂 To get access to the motors you need to unbolt the very top sides.

Central Vac will not turn on.
ANSWER : These problems are nearly exclusively caused by a bad circut board and replacing it is the fix. Bad boards can cause many different effects so its nearly impossible to be sure. The 9v signal wire is not enough to short out an entire unit so it is unlikely the hose. If it is a direct connect system and you are pulling power from the 110 somehow that would cause main unit problems but that is unlikely at best. Sounds like a failed board to me.

WIRING IN 24 VOLT INLET VALVE FOR CENTRAL VAC. I GET A CONSTANT ON. I HAVE TRIED MAY DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS BUT I CONTINUE TO HAVE MY CENTRAL VAC AS A CONSTANT ON? COULD IT BE THE 24V WIRE?
ANSWER : No, there is only two possibilities. One, the low voltage wires are touching somewhere in the system or two, the relay is stuck in the on position. To find out which it is disconnect the low voltage wire from the unit (theres two clips on the side) and then plug the canister in. If the it still runs with the wire disconnected then it is the relay board. If it doesn’t then it is the low voltage wiring in the system. Good luck!
