How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is often caused by leaving fuel in the chainsaw for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the chainsaw engine to stall.
If your STIHL chainsaw is going to have a problem, it`s likely to be with a worn carburetor, bad spark plugs, loose fuel hoses, or clogged fuel lines. You should also inspect the fuel intake system and ensure that there are no compression issues.
We hate to inform you, but gas chainsaws with automatic electric-start systems don`t exist. The mechanism that keeps the saw running—the gas engine—is the same mechanism that gives it the power to start. A special spring is probably the most common easy-start feature you`ll find on chainsaws.
Place the chainsaw on flat, level ground. Make sure the bar is clear of obstacles and bystanders are at a safe distance. Engage the chain brake. Engage the safety switch and simultaneously pull the trigger switch to start the chainsaw motor.
This switch breaks the flow of current through the primary coil and causes a voltage spike (of perhaps 200 volts). The secondary coil, having 100 times more turns than the primary coil, amplifies this voltage to approximately 20,000 volts, and this voltage feeds to the spark plug.
If your chainsaw still starts and then stops working, check the air filter. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or damaged. Another reason that your chainsaw starts and then stops working could be that the spark arrestor is dirty or clogged. If this is the case, clean it with a wire brush.
One of the first symptoms of a problem with the ignition module are engine performance issues. If the ignition module fails or has any problems it can lead to performance issues with the vehicle, such as misfires, hesitation, loss of power, and even reduced fuel economy.
Many chainsaw models can be started in what is known as `half-throttle` position. In this position, the chain can rotate – if the chain brake is not activated. There are two safe positions to start your chainsaw: on the ground, or with the saw between your legs.
Smart Start is one of Husqvarna`s unique technology because when their chainsaws are installed with it, it means it`s extremely easy to start. No more trying to crank it until you get tired of it.
Tips for properly mixing fuel for a chainsaw:

Always mix the petrol and oil in a clean container intended for fuel. Always start by filling with half of the petrol to be used, then add all of the oil, mix (agitate) the fuel mixture and add the remaining petrol. Do not mix more than one month`s supply of fuel at a time.

A battery chainsaw will make quick work of most branches while being easy to handle. Most battery chainsaws are lighter and more compact than petrol chainsaws, so reaching branches on even the thickest log is a simple task.
Just like your car`s engine depends on oil to keep it running smoothly, your gas-powered chainsaw engine needs oil to operate at its best.
Chainsaw engines are traditionally either a two-stroke gasoline (petrol) internal combustion engine (usually with a cylinder volume of 30 to 120 cm3) or an electric motor driven by a battery or electric power cord. In a petrol chainsaw, fuel is generally supplied to the engine by a carburetor at the intake.
The chainsaw—a portable power tool that cuts wood via a fast-moving chain that rotates around a guide bar—can make short work of pruning, felling, limbing, and bucking trees. It also ranks as the most dangerous power tool available without a license.
An operating chainsaw contacting fully cured fine fuels while being used may ignite a fire. An operating chainsaw held in one position for even a short period of time may cause an ignition, either from direct contact or when dry fine fuels are in close proximity to the exhaust discharge.
Gas-powered chainsaws are the most powerful option, and can drive the longest bar length. This means that they can bring down larger trees and work faster with less wear on the chain. Gas-powered saws are noisier and heavier than electric models, and their engine requires more maintenance.
Information we found online suggests that Stihl Pro Chainsaws have a run time of about 2,000 hours. That means the saw would last you for a minimum of 5.5 years before dying. Keep in mind this time is rated for professional chainsaws and not for regular homeowner saws.

One tell-tale sign that a chainsaw has flooded is the smell of fresh petrol near the muffler. To ascertain whether this is indeed the problem, simply disassemble the part, pull the starter cord as if you were switching on the engine, then dry it, reassemble it and try switching it on again.
If the filter becomes clogged, not enough fuel will reach the engine for it to run properly. Because your chainsaw will idle, but dies when it is revved up to full power, it means that the filter is only partially clogged; it will allow enough fuel to the engine to run on idle, but not enough to sustain full throttle.
The carburetor on a chain saw is pretty simple, as carbs go, but it`s not entirely uncomplicated. The job of the carb is to accurately meter extremely tiny quantities of fuel and mix it with the air entering the engine so that the engine runs properly.
If you run a chainsaw without bar oil, it`s likely that the chain will heat up and eventually break. This can cause extensive damage to the chainsaw and may even require a new chain and bar. It`s imperative that you use the correct amount of bar oil.

Problem starting Sometimes will not start at all. Sometimes will do a quick start and stop. Other times it starts and runs fine????
ANSWER : This can happen if you have an intermittent short in your cord. Try plugging it in and then wiggling the cord around where it goes into the body of the vacuum with the switch set to “on.” (If you’re not sure whether it’s on or off, just click it back and forth occasionally.)
.If the motor kicks on there’s a short, which usually requires a cord replacement. If that’s the case, it’s a relatively simple fix for most dyson models.
.If not, you could have a short in your switch or somewhere else in the electrical system of the machine.

Bin isn’t filling, won’t pickup and brushes won’t spin for the second time. Last time iRobot had to replace both wheel modules. Any suggestions? I clean it every time I use it!
ANSWER : Wheel modules? It’s more likely to be the cleaning head module. Clean your brushes exactly as the manual describes– particularly the yellow bearings. Run the Roomba on a hard floor without the dustbin. Does the brush turn? If not, call support again and they’ll help you out.

My Dyson DC07 vacuum started to run slower after being on for a little while and then would run normally again. I have switched on today and it has just stopped. When I push the start button, on occasions it almost starts and then doesn’t. I am wondering if there is a problem with the switch and if so how can it be fixed?

Thankyou.

ANSWER : The motor running slower was the motor starting to burn out. The “almost start” is the brushes making intermittent contact with the armature in the motor. .
.Your machine needs a new motor Pam.

My lux 7000 has a new bag but when i start to use it with the power unit or without the unit shut’s it self off i can reset the lites or the motor if you will by clicking the on off switch 4or 5 times and i’m ready to go again untill you start to work and off it goes you can repeat the switch thing as long as u want, it just won’t let u vacuum ,it turn’s it self off .I blew it all out but found nothing in it. if u don’t try to vacuum it will run as long as u want to listen to it. Can you
ANSWER : Have you replace the afterfilter? It may also cause this if rather dirty. It’s located under the tool caddy/air diffuser on the back half of the machine.
.Try this: Disconnect hose, turn on vacuum. Does it continue running? If so, place palm of hand over intake. Does it shut off? If so, it’s probably a broken or worn out “control valve assembly” (CVA). Or a tube connecting to it could be clogged and simply needs cleaned out. This is very common in vacuums that have had generic or “made to fit” bags used in them. Either way, this is a job for Supertech.
.Take your vacuum to a nearby Aerus Electrolux authorized store and have the service tech check it out, provide an estimate for repair, and then repair it. It’s a good idea to have the interior cleaned at this time, and doesn’t cost a lot more. It will get rid of the dust in and around the motor that could shorten the life of the motor.
