How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

A vacuum circuit breaker trips through an error like an earth fault, short circuit, over/under voltage. A contactor is usually performed in series through a fuse that provides to avoid fault current.
A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is the type of circuit breaker which uses vacuum between the electrodes as the arc quenching medium. The vacuum circuit breakers are mainly used in medium voltage applications, where the supply voltage ranges from 11 kV to 33 kV.
Vacuum Circuit Breaker, Rated Current: Up to 1250 Amp, Rated Voltage: Up To 410 V.

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is an artificial inert gas with excellent insulating properties and exceptional thermal and chemical stability.

Vacuums often cause “nuisance tripping” with AFCI circuit breakers because vacuums produce a small amount of sparking as they run. And because sparks are essentially small electrical arcs, they`ll occasionally trip your AFCI breaker. Other devices that are prone to “nuisance tripping” include: Flat screen TVs.
The internal components of a pressure vacuum breaker can become damaged by freezing and through regular use over time. A clear sign that something is not working properly is leaking from under the bell or bonnet assembly of the valve.
A hose connection vacuum breaker should be installed on each faucet or hose bibb that is connected to the potable water supply to prevent backflow to the water supply. A HVB is a small valve assembly ( Figure 1 ) that protects an individual water outlet.
The exceptional economic and techno- logical aspects of the vacuum quenching principle have made the vacuum circuit-breaker the device that is mostly used worldwide for voltage ratings from 1 kV to 52 kV.
A vacuum breaker, also called a vacuum vent valve, protects vessels, piping systems or tanks against vacuum by means of specific ventilation and therefore prevents damage such as deformation and contraction.
A vacuum breaker, commonly referred to as a backflow preventer, is a device that prevents the potable water in your home, and possibly your neighborhood, from getting contaminated. It`s basically a one-way valve.
A vacuum breaker is an attachment commonly placed on a bibcock valve or toilet or urinal flush valve, that prevents water from being siphoned backward into the public drinking water system. This prevents contamination should the public drinking water system`s pressure drop.
Air circuit breakers are only used in applications where the voltage is less than 690 volts. These are commonly referred to as LT (low tension) applications. On the other hand, vacuum circuit breakers are ideal for medium voltage levels with voltages less than 33 kV.
The easiest way to prevent your circuit breaker from constantly tripping is to simply not overload one circuit. Keeping your electrical load split between multiple circuits means each breaker won`t have to bear the full load of current flowing through.
A Trip-Free circuit breaker / supplementary protector is one that will trip open even if the ON-OFF mechanism is held in the ON position. This is an important characteristic of a circuit breaker as it protects humans and equipment from the hazards of overcurrent. If a breaker is tripping, it is doing its job.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Hoover EmPower 4600 keeps blowing circuit breaker. The number of outlets in the house that will allow me to run the vacuum is dropping quickly. It is a 4 year old house and all the circuit breakers are 20 amps. The vacuum only has a 12 amp motor. I am at a loss to solve this problem.
ANSWER : Take it to a friends house and plug it in if it does the same thing then the problem is in the vacuum cleaner.check your cord and see if there are anny cuts in it.you can open the breaker box then plug in the vacuum and watch the breaker box.you might see a spark and narrow down the problem.

The breaker on the vacuum trips after about 3 seconds on. The canister was extremely full and started to smell like burnt wood, we fully cleaned out the unit. Now when the vacuum is turned on, the motor sounds weak, and then turns off in a matter of seconds, and we have to reset the breaker on the vacuum to get it to start again for another few seconds.
ANSWER : This sounds indicative of a worn set of carbon brushes on a dieing motor for a central vac. the armature is ,likely damaged causing teh breaker to blow. Please post back with more details as to make and model. Do not atempt to run the vac

My e wave microwave appears to be in fine working order until the door is opened. It then trips the breaker and ceases working. Ater the house breaker is reset, the power is restored to the microwave until the door is opened again.. I havve tried plugging the microwave into another area that is on a different power breaker but again the breaker trips and the microwave ends all functions. Have you any solutions to my problem?

ANSWER : You may have a short circuit on the INTERIOR LIGHT BULB circuit in your microwave.
.
.This might explain why the breaker trips every time you open the door.
.
.If so, you would have to unplug and disassemble the unit in order to access the wires and light bulb socket inside the case in order to troubleshoot and repair the problem.
.
.If you are unfamiliar with safe electrical troubleshooting and repair procedures, please be extremely careful or consider hiring an electrician to do the work. There are some hazardous components inside which remain dangerous even after the unit is unplugged.
.
.Good luck.

I have an Eureka Express canister vacuum – I believe it’s model 8284 – that just stopped working. Plug it in, turn it on, and absolutely nothing happens. I took it to the local sew and vac place and they say it’s a circuit board that is no longer available. I’ve looked at all the parts lists and diagrams for that vacuum and I would swear there isn’t a circuit board there. (I wouldn’t have even thought that in 1989 they would have used circuits.) In any case, I absolutely love this machine a
ANSWER : Given the age of the machine weighed against you fondness for it, unless you can find a fault with either the switch or the cord, there is little else that can be done. With time the electrical lead can break down and one of the wires in the cord can break. Check both the live and the neutral wires for continuity from the plug to the switch. Check the switch for continuity across the input terminals and the output terminals. There is one other thing to check and that would be the brushes. You will probably be told that brushes are no longer available for that model, but some kindly parts outlet may match up a pair of brushes for you.

I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner – MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I’ve had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. I checked with different outlets, used both front attachment and hose attachment. Checked the front part of the motor/ spiral case. This
