How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The cause of this is the carbon dust. The carbon dust eventually becomes too much for the airflow so it gets blocked and the powerful motor is blowing it`s exhaust really powerfully, so the air must go somewhere. The sealed filter is doing well but it becomes too much so it just pops the filter out.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
The Turbinehead, like the Motorhead, is powered by a 12 amp motor. It also uses Level 3 Root Cyclone Technology which is said to be Dyson`s most efficient system for removing microscopic dust. Cyclone technology spins the air extremely fast and uses centrifugal force to remove dust and debris from the air.
I can assure you that air coming out of the Ball is a normal feature of the machine, as this is where HEPA-filtered air is returned to the room. The exhaust air will often feel warm as it will have passed through the motor.
Dyson Pulsing After Cleaning Filter

If your Dyson vacuum is pulsing even after cleaning the filter, it may be because the filter is not set correctly or is clogged with debris. To fix this issue, try reseating the filter and cleaning it thoroughly to remove any blockages.

If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
In many cases, you probably can repair a Dyson yourself, especially when it comes to common issues (see below). However, even if your machine needs some extra TLC by a Dyson expert, it can be worth getting it repaired.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
Using a kilopascal gauge, the Dyson DC23 has a suction level just over 25 kPa. This is very good considering the average range for a vacuums suction is around 20 kPa.
The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan. The impeller rotates at an incredibly high speed of about 30,000 to 35,000 RPM. A suction motor`s power is measured by multiplying the rate of air flow and the vacuum pressure, which induces air flow from the brush through the hose.
Vacuum cleaners blow air out to keep the motor cool and this may feel quite warm. There is a safety cut out to switch the product of if there is a problem. If the product is not cutting out then it is ok! The warm air is perfectly normal.
If an unusual smell is emitted from your Dyson vacuum, it may be due to a clogged filter. As the filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odor. Remove the filter by twisting the purple dial labeled “filter” located at the top of the vacuum.
Dyson cordless vacuum filters are engineered to capture microscopic particles. Over time, these can build up in the filter and reduce performance.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
The vacuum has a safety feature that turns off the vacuum when the vacuum gets to a certain high temperature or overheats. This happens because the vacuum has a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum turns off due to overheating, the thermostat has to be reset before you can use it again.
We recommend replacing your air purifier filter every 12 months. That`s because over time, filters can get clogged with pollutants, and even let unpleasant odors back into the room.
Summary. Dyson batteries should last around 2-6 years before needing to be replaced. This wide range reflects the fact that how you care for and maintain the battery will affect how long it lasts. If you want your vacuum`s battery to last longer, make sure it`s stored at room temperature.
Ultimately, unlike bagged vacuum cleaners, the performance of Dyson machines won`t be compromised the more you vacuum. Our machines are engineered with six layers of advanced whole machine filtration, which means that we capture 99.97% of microns as small as 0.3 microns.
What is Dyson`s return policy? If you`d like to return a Dyson machine* for a full refund, you need to return the machine within 30 days from the delivery date. For purchases made at a Dyson Demo Store or Dyson Service Center, a return must be made within 30 days from the purchase date.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
The Dyson V6 is designed so that you can store the unit on the charger. Storing the Dyson on the charger will not harm the battery and it is not necessary to use the unit until the battery is depleted.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

Have Dyson DC 14. When tilt to vacuum, the handle and coiled hose comes away from the unit. The problem started when the little purple ridged curved part on front of vacuum cleaner right below handle came loose and a spring fell out from somewhere–don’t know where. I pushed on the purple ridge part and it snapped back on. Now, can’t get it loose again, don’t know where the spring goes, and handle still comes loose from vacuum.
ANSWER : I’m not positive whether or not this is the wand handle because there are several versions of the DC14. However the device the locks and unlocks the wand in place is pretty similar between all the versions.

The first picture is the wand release catch spring. The second is the wand. The purple piece is the wand release catch. It is held in place at the bottom by two plastic pins. Basically the catch release is pressed over the two pins until they lock in the two holes at the bottom of the catch release. To get it off you need to pry it off and over the plastic pins. The spring simply sets in between the wand shaft and the back side of the catch release. There should be a spot on the back of the catch release to help hold the spring in place. If not you may need to replace the catch release.

My 4 yr old Nilfisk vacuum cleaner has been working fine up until now. But suddenly, it has hardly any suction power and also, hot air seems to be coming out thru the vents on top and also thru the space that’s normally used for blowing air OUT….the outlet with the retractable cover located close to the part where the power cable comes out of and retracts into. I’ve checked the filter and the hose and they are not clogged…I have also put in a new bag. Not keen to buy another vacuum cleaner u
ANSWER : Hi there SmartAlec from Nelsonvacuums.com.au here.It sounds like a blockage of some kind. The best way to find it is to set the machine up for normal vacuuming and remove one component at a time until the suction returns. eg turn on and feel suction under floor head – not good? then remove the rod, then the hose.
Once at the machine on its own it gets a little triky as i don’t know which model you have. However if you have a bagged model remove all the filters and the bag and retest. There will be at least 2 filters, one before the motor and one after (maybe under the vacuum or right at the back). If it is a bagless model even though the filter may look clean it is probably blocked with very fine dust. If suction returns when the filter is removed then you need to buy a new filter. I am a nilfisk vacuum cleaner agent so i can supply a filter for you.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.
