How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
For a vacuum cleaner to glide easily on a carpet, air must flow into the nozzle and through the machine. Block the air flow and the vacuum seals itself to the carpet and is hard to push. And, unfortunately, that`s what many consumers have discovered when their new carpeting is installed.
If your vacuum cleaner turns on but won`t pick up on carpet or bare floors, something is impeding suction. You may need to change the vacuum bag, unclog the hose, replace/clean the filters, replace the hose, change the belt, or repair the motor.
If the machine will no longer efficiently pick items up, the filter might be dirty. If after cleaning the filter your vacuum is still not sucking things up, turn your vacuum around and pull the red tab at the bottom of your Dyson out.
While extreme suction power may offer peace of mind to homeowners who want to feel confident that their vacuums are effective at sucking up dirt and germs, it can be very damaging to your carpet and should be avoided! For high pile and premium soft carpet, be sure to avoid vacuums with concentrated or sealed suction.
Not really. Overall, carpets can stand to be vacuumed several times a week without sustaining damage. Leaving dirt in a carpet, however, actually breaks down underneath the carpet fibers.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.
The suction control slider is located at the front of the cleaner head. The ball located between the bin and the cleaner head.
When isolated strands pop up with vacuuming, this is called sprouting. With shedding, fibers are no longer connected to the carpet, but with sprouting, fibers remain attached. To resolve the problem, simply clip sprouts to an even height with the surrounding pile.
If you checked your brush roll, floor setting, and belt but your brush roll is still not spinning, that means you probably need a Shark micro switch replacement. This small switch tells the vacuums brush when to start spinning.
Suctioning can stimulate the vagal nerve, predisposing the patient to bradycardia and hypoxia. Hypoxia can be profound from occlusion, interruption of oxygen supply, and prolonged suctioning. Mucosal trauma, physical injuries, and bleeding can result from blunt or penetrating trauma.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
The best mid-range vacuum for carpets is the Dyson Ball Animal 3. This bagless upright is less sturdily-built than the Miele Classic C1 and less easy to maintain, but it`s still very good when dealing with debris on carpets.
DO NOT use any vacuum made by Oreck, Dyson, Miele, Shark as these will cause excessive fuzzing. In addition DO NOT use any Robotic vacuum or Whole House Central vacuum system.
A 1/2 inch height adjustment should resolve this and be easily added by Dyson. Put a flip switch on the vacuum head itself that raises it up higher off the carpet.
Carpets that still look dirty or have stains reappear after cleaning is a result of something called wicking. This is due to over wetting the carpet, the backing, and pad which causes them to return back to the surface once dry.
Fine particles. Fine particles are no match for even the strongest vacuums. Construction dust, makeup, used coffee grounds, fireplace ash, and other fine particles can burn out the motor and be released back into the air. It`s best to sweep these items up to keep your vacuum – and yourself – safe.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening. Make sure there`s no dirt lodged in the top part of the bin.
Sometimes your vacuum pulsates on and off or keeps dying when using the extra powerful `Max Mode`, which can be related to the charge of your battery. Try turning this function off by pressing the Max button on your vacuum.
Within the 3.5kg machine is 262AW suction power1, to ensure no loss of suction. HEPA filtration traps 99.99% of particles down to 0.1 microns in size2, for scientific proof of a deep clean. Our latest vacuum also includes a single-button power control – removing the need to hold a trigger as you clean.

Corner of the rug sucked in and the roller now does not spin
ANSWER : If you can’t hear the motor running, look for a reset button which may have tripped. If the motor runs, remove the belt and look for a burned spot that might be preventing brush turning. Replace it if it is. Make sure that the wall outlet has power (check with a lamp). Hope this helps!

The brush stopped revolving. I don’t see anything blocking. It sucked up a corner of a rug for a split second but didn’t pull anything off of the rug, ie, nothing from the rug is in there. Do these have belts? I don’t see that.

ANSWER : Although I do not share the exact same model that you have, there is a belt in the one I own. .
.Checking it was pretty easy as the unit comes apart in a simple manner..
.I do not know how your unit comes apart but look for screws or screw holes that hold the area in question together and remove. .
.The belt for my unit is tiny and somewhat hidden near the edge of the unit. The brush was powered by the suction of the vacuum using small paddles that caught the wind. If your unit has this then make sure the belt is still attached and whatever is powering the belt is operating properly..
.Good Luck hope this helps.

No Water My Bissell rug shampooer does not eject water or saop whan I pull the saop trigger on the handle. I checked both filters and they are clean. Then, I removed the container that sucks up the water and pulled the saop trigger, water barely came out of the tubes. I tried to clean the rug in our family room and the rug was not wet when I finished, no water coming out to clean the rug. HELP HELP HELP!!! I live in Colorado is there a Bissell repair shop near Denver, HELP!!! Thanks Dominick ema
ANSWER : Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn’t squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle also, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can’t spray, just re-fasten it down.

I have a Eureka 5902AVZ and the brushroll does not work. when i remove the belt, which is not torn nor worn out, the motor spins perfectly fine. Though when i put the brushroll back into place, it shows that the motor is trying to spin, but with resistance. it seems the brushroll will not spin if locked into place, because there is no attachment on the left side of the brushroll that will allow it to spin freely with the belt. am I missing some parts or is there something else wrong?
ANSWER : Hi and welcome to Fixya. I am Kelly.
.
.You have correctly identified the problem as the brush roll itself.
.
.There is a bearing under each end cap of the brush roll. You can gain access to the bearings usually by gripping the browah roll end caps and rotate the caps in opposing but loosening (ccw rt / cw left) directions.
.
.Many times I have found that there is just a mass of hair under the end cap that functions like a brake. Clean it up really well on under BOTH end caps.
.
.Do a spin test by putting the end caps back on (Hold it horizontal) and rotating the brush roll with your thumbs. It should spin freely.
.
.If it feels like there is still friction then your probably going to have to take the brush roll with you down to the nearest vacuum cleaner repair / supply shop and get 2 new bearings. Most shops will install the NEW bearings for you if you have the brush roll in hand. It is a much cheaper fix than the brush roll itself.
.
.(buy a new belt too!)
.
. Take care

Roller brush stops spinning and vacuum makes noise. Brush will spin normally ok, until you use it on the rug.
ANSWER : That means that the belt is stretched and can’t turn the brush against the resistance of the carpet. Here is a link for the.instructions on how to change the belt and a link for the belt you need:

My Hoover Windtunnel Mach 6.9 brush roller quit working. Upon investigating I found that the idler arm pulley was broken so I managed to replace that. Before putting the cover back on I see the control knob for the roller brush moves a plastic piece left or right to activate/deactivate the brush roller. I don't know where this plastic piece connects. It appears to me that the idler are when raised creates tension on the belt which drives the roller. I'm at a loss trying to figure ou

Why wont the brushes spin? I have had this machine for about 3 years and it has always worked great, tonight the brushes will not spin at all, it still sprays and sucks up the water. We took the brushes off and were able to spin them by hand
ANSWER : In this machine there is no belt. The brushes actually spin by vacuum and in the turbine assembly there is a small wheel bearign which rusts out. You will need to remove and repair or replace the turbine and gear assembly P/N should be 43191009
