How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
Brush Head Bearings Are Clogged or Have Failed

These are symptoms of bad or dirty bearings. You should remove the brush roll or rolls from the vacuum. Check to see that the bearings at the end of the brush roll allow it to spin freely. Make sure that there is no hair trapped in the bearings.

The rotary brush in the cleaner head of your Dyson V7 spins at high speeds and helps to beat and dislodge the dirt out of your carpets.
`Tripped` reset systems are the most common reasons for a brushbar not turning, but there are some other less common reasons too. These include: If the bearings on the end of the brushbar have seized, you won`t be able to turn it at all. This will often result in a broken belt as well, so be aware of this.
Inspecting the Vacuum Commutator for Motor Brush Problems

Test that by turning the motor off and pushing on the center shaft, the armature. If it has any play, besides spinning, then replace the motor. If solid then replace the brushes – motor brush replacement instructions.

If your machine has a clutch, the reason the brush bar isn`t spinning is unlikely to be a snapped belt. The clutch allows your brush roll to be turned off (for certain types of hard floors, etc.). First you should check if your brush bar is turned on. Try to turn the knob one click clockwise to the “auto” position.
if your dyson DC 24 has a faulty brush bar motor now sometimes the brushes on these in to suddenly stop going around the first thing to do is to look on the side the brush bar housing and click this reset switch.
Press the brush control button located next to the ON/OFF switch to turn the brushbar off for vacumming delicate rugs, looped carpets and hard floors. Press the button again to restart the brushbar for vacuuming carpets.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
It turns the main brush on and off.
Your vacuum has a brush roller that is supposed to spin and help lift dirt from the carpet or floor.
If you look closely, on the center of the cleaner head, there`s a slide bar positioned with a plus and minus sign. It`s a manual height slider that adjusts how close the cleaner head is to the floor. The plus is for ground-in dust and debris. The minus is for deep pile carpets and delicate flooring.
You may have stalled the brush motor. To reset, turn off and unplug, then plug back in and turn on. The brush roll may have lodged debris or other entanglements keeping the brush from rotating.
Almost every time that the brush stops turning, it is because of hair wrapped around the brush roller. You will burn out the belt if you use it too long in this mode. Your only fix is to take it apart and and clean it (and cut any hair stuck in it in the process).
A Dyson handheld that keeps cutting out is known as pulsing. A Dyson V7 pulsing problem can be very frustrating! A few reasons why your Dyson is pulsing are potential blockages or problems with the bin or filter.
The carbon brushes conduct electricity from the fixed parts of the motor through the moving parts of the motor.
A carpet beater bar is essentially a floor nozzle for a vacuum equipped with a rotating beater bar that spins while the vacuum is in use. By spinning, it agitates the carpet and loosens any lead dust that might be stuck in carpet fibers.
Roller brush is not spinning

Check to make sure the vacuum is switched to the correct mode. The switch should be in the Power and Brushroll mode to make the roller spin. If it is in just the power mode the roller will not move. The brushroll indicator light should be green when working.

According to Dyson the belt should last the lifetime of the machine. If you are having problems with the brushbar rotating here is an interactive link which shows how to check the brushbar and how to reset the cleaner. http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc24/dc24…
If your brush is scratching your floor, or not cleaning as well as it used to, then you may want to replace your brush bar.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
The belt is located inside the vacuum cleaner and helps to power the brush roll. If the belt ever breaks, the brush roll will not spin and the vacuum will not work properly. There is a lot of confusion out there about whether or not the Dyson Ball vacuum has a belt. The answer is yes, it does have a belt.

Dyson Animal handheld brush not turning – Dyson DC07 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

We would recommend checking it for a blockage and a removing any hair or fibres from the brush bar.

As the brush bar relies on the suction power of your machine, it would be worth cleaning the filter and checking for blockages as this may cause a loss of suction will in turn stop the brush bar in the Mini Turbine head turning.

DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum: dyson animal wont turn off…
ANSWER : Dyson has switch problems, needs new switch.

The motor is working but brush not spinning – Dyson DC07 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
ANSWER : DC07s have two drivebelts that turn the brush bar – one connects the output of the motor to the clutch, the other connects the clutch to the brush bar.
You can check the latter simply by removing the sole plate and looking. Unfortunately the other belt is hidden under a plastic cover, so you cant see if it is okay or not without some dismantling. This cover is not easy to remove and requires a Torx driver to under the securing screws.
If, after removing the cover, the other belt is okay, then you have a faulty clutch. New clutches are available on eBay reasonably cheaply, but again good tools and DIY skills are required.
Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com which has some excellent info on dismantling and repairing a DC07, but unless you have access to such tools, and feel confident to tackle it, it’s probably time to call Dyson or a Vacuum repairer.

Let me know if this helps.

Bad Motor I have purchased two of the Kenmore direct drive beltless systems with Progressive systems. The first died after a year, the vacuum motor start making a grinding noies. I pulled the side HEPA filter and could see a fine coating of graphite like dust. Took it to a vacuum repair shop. They said the brushes were going and thus the motor was shot. I liked the vacuum and bought a second, 1 year later the motor is making a slight noise that and removing the HEPA filter I find a slight metall
ANSWER : That dust is from the carbon brushes on the motor. You may need to check them, and also clean out the motor compartment. A slight noise could be a motor bearing starting to go. Does the smell like rubber or electrical. If rubber, then the belt has stretched and needs to replaced. If electrical, then something is causing the motor to run hot, like a clogged filter, or it could be a motor going bad.

Now that I just fixed my Lux Legacy canister vacuum, I need help on my other Electrolux Regency Series upright! The vacuum works fine but the rotating brush does not work and the brush motor does not turn on. Tried cleaning the brush and hitting hte reset button to no avail. This upright has a triple setting switch and I checked the each of the wires seem to be attached. Tried rotating the brush by hand and it would not budge. Was going to “encourage” the brush to turn with a set of articula
ANSWER : There are a couple rectangular holes on the bottom of the power nozzle, beside the wheels. These have tabs in them that need released with a standard screwdriver.
.rogerpotts_10.jpg.Once they release, turn the vacuum over and lift cover of power nozzle at the back. This pulls the front of the cover out of the lip on the “bumper”.
.Once this is done, you’ll need to unscrew the screw at each end of the brush. Lift the brush out and thoroughly clean it, including the ends.
. rogerpotts_9.jpg.
.Check the wiring to make sure they’re connected to the terminals of the motor. Also, check the belt for wear and tear. These belts can last for five years or more, but if it looks bad a good time to replace it is while you have the power head apart.
.When reassembling the vacuum, ensure the belt is fitted properly around the motor shaft and brush.
.Insert the front of the cover first, ensuring the edge fits neatly beneath the lip on the bumper all the way around. It takes a little manipulating to press the back into place. Make sure both tabs click into the locked position. Turn the vacuum over and reinstall screws. Try to rotate brush by hand a few times.
.At this point, plug the vacuum in and turn it on. If the power head doesn’t run, press the reset button. If the power head motor still doesn’t run, it could be due to loose or disconnected wires that lead to the reset switch, a bad reset switch, or even a bad motor. The vacuum needs to be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for further diagnosis and repair.
