How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Replace the Brush Belt

If the vacuum is still hard to push, tilt it back far enough that you can inspect the moving brush while the vacuum is running. Be careful to avoid getting too close to the moving parts. If you see that the brush is not turning, that means you will need to replace the brush belt.

The suction control slider is located at the front of the cleaner head. The ball located between the bin and the cleaner head.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
The explanation is that pushing it drives the back of it down into the carpet, whereas pulling it actually lifts the back of the head a little, thereby providing a vent to relieve the suction, which is the cause of the problem.
For a vacuum cleaner to glide easily on a carpet, air must flow into the nozzle and through the machine. Block the air flow and the vacuum seals itself to the carpet and is hard to push. And, unfortunately, that`s what many consumers have discovered when their new carpeting is installed.
First check the airflow valve located under the handle. Sliding this open may make it easier to push your vacuum. It could also be that your suction is set too high. To fix, use the suction controls on the canister to adjust the suction settings.
Vacuum cleaning is one of the household chores that may leave us with pain. That is because while using a vacuum cleaner, weight is transferred back and forth between the back and the front lower limbs. Vacuum cleaning also involves bending which indirectly puts pressure on the lower back.

Please try again later. No, it does not have a manual height adjustment. It adjusts automatically.
To reset the machine, turn the power off (using either the power button on the remote or the Main body), wait 60 seconds and then turn back on.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on.
The Dyson V7 Fluffy Cordless Stick Vacuum is a remarkably lightweight, versatile device that provides nearly effortless, but very effective, vacuuming on hard floors, walls, window blinds and furniture.
First check the airflow valve located under the handle. Sliding this open may make it easier to push your vacuum. It could also be that your suction is set too high. To fix, use the suction controls on the canister to adjust the suction settings.
Response from Dyson:

While it does work remarkably well on most flooring surfaces, it can be incompatible with some thicker or more plush floor coverings. The cleaner head is self adjusting, so it will automatically raise and lower to seal in suction across all floors.

A reason why your Dyson may not be smoothly running over your floors could be all thanks to the brush bar. Over time the brush will become entangled by hairs and fibres resulting in it to no longer turn. Safety First! Please make sure your appliance is switched off before beginning any maintenance work.

The Vacuum will not Stand Upright

Locate the u-bend cover, press the yellow release button, and look for any possible blockages. These blockages may be preventing the machine from locking in its upright position as well as reclining when already locked.

The suction is good, but it can’t pick up most of the stuff on the floor. The hand held hose works very well, but it doesn’t even pick up little fuzzies reliably when I push it along. And, the suction is too hard I think because it used to push easily and now I have to push really hard, even on flat carpet.
ANSWER : Check entire length of hose, including the piece in the power head, for clogs. Simply drop a marble in one end and allow it to roll out the other. If it doesn’t, then the hose is clogged somewhere.

DCo7 too much suction hard to push
ANSWER : This suggests that the bristles on your brush roller are worn out.  When the bristles are a good working length, rotation of the roller actually helps to pull the machine over the carpet. When the bristles wear down this effect is lost.

Poor Suction Heya! So I just picked up a used Dyson, but when I vacuum with it, the suction is pretty weak and it spits all kinds of stuff out the back and into my feet. When I pull the hose I have good suction, but in regular mode it hardly picks up anything. The brushes are spinning, and it eventually will clean an area if I go over it again and again. Maybe a clog somewhere? Please tell me that Dysons have better suction than my $50 Dirt Devil! Thanks!
ANSWER : I recently bought a second hand Dyson DC07. Its suction was poor. I removed all the un-clipable pipe bits and to remove any blockage but it all looked clear. The Final Sponge and hepper filter did have a lot of dust in it and the rotating brush was full of hair but nothing bad.
.
.I eventual gave in to curiosity and removed the three screws in the top or the yellow removable dust collection tube and cyclone bit to see what was in there. The mechanism to release the flap at the bottom of the collection tube does not allow you to remove the lid completely but it does open far enough to get inside. I found the whole top section of the yellow plastic bit blocked by a big plug of compacted dust and a champagne cork. If you are willing to take the risk and have a torx 15 screwdriver handy it that part may be blocked. It did get a bit messy.
.
.If I was going to attempt the same procedure I’d remove the dust collection unit from the vacuum cleaner as I did before, but leave the clear tube attached and the emptying flap firmly closed to reduce the mess from the dust falling out the bottom while cleaning the top part.

No suction Hello – any help with this would be much appreciated!

I just changed the bag and filters. The machine runs, seems normal, but there is no suction. There is no blockage of the hose, as indicated by the fact that that little viewer window above where the hose connects to the unit is not showing the red portion that it shows when there is something blocking the hose (god, this is hard to describe!).

If I disconnect the hose and put my hand over the hole, I feel some suction. But

ANSWER : Well, it actually sounds like there is a blockage. Try removing your hose and dropping something through it, like a quqrter. If it comes through, no clog. If it is clogged, I believe that machine has a blower on the upper part of the cleaner (maybe in the bag compartment towards the top. You can take out the filter holder and plug the hose in there and run the unit . Does the blockage come out? If not, Try shaking the hose, or you can put a stiff wire in it to try to free it. Do not run water through it. If there is no blockage at all, then you will probably need to take it to a service center. But I am pretty confident that we are looking at a clog situation. Let me know if this fixesya! Thanks, Rene (vacuum Doctor)

When pushing foreward the vacuum is hard to push and if pushed on to hard it will turn over on itself.
ANSWER : My dyson dc17 animal had become nearly impossible to push on carpets.

sure enough i found that my roller was warn down to nubs (vacuum is probably 8 years old, and gets used nearly every day)

I replaced the roller and WOW! it feels like its self propelled now. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

thanks for the help!!

No suction My vacuum does not seem to have much suction when in use. The agitator brush is rotating but I’m not able to get much off the carpet. The suction is fine when I use the attached wand.
ANSWER : If the belt is stretched, then it can’t turn the brush rol under load, if you haven’t chenged it in the last 6 months, then I would put a new one one. Also check the dirt inlet by the brush roll for a blockage.

Lost suction my DCO7 lost suction in the hose I started taking it apart and cleaning it and looking for clogs (probably more than I should have) and when I put it back together it has awesome suction in the hose but no suction in the base. It just pulls the pine needles up (christmas tree) but they never appear in the “bag” compartment and when I look they are just all gathered in a clump in the bottom by the brush.
ANSWER : Hi.
.
.Remove the sole plate turn the 3 plastic screws to unlock & lift off.
.
.Now remove the blockages that have accumilated from the oppening of short clear hose.
.Check you can turn brush roller & check belt.
.
.Now reassemble switch on pull handle back & look under machine is brush spinning ?
.
.If not check the knob on side of machine is in drive (D) position.

.Chris..

While using my mop yesterday, it stopped letting steam come out. Tonight I plugged it up again and you could hear it trying to steam. I push the button in to release the square frame and it pushed out a burst of steam and pushed the head off. Put it back together and it still will not let steam out. No matter how much water is in it.
