Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Vacuum M085845Vacuum\015 Good afternoon,..I have a Dirt Devil 12 amp Jaguar Bagless Upright vacuum cleaner and I have had it for about three years. For about two or three months there has been a persistent and strong burning smell when I run the vacuum. It still works perfectly, it just reeks.\302\240..Here is what I have done so far since it started:\302\240..I have replaced the belt. It was a bit worn and I thought that had solved the problem, but alas it did not. I have double checked that the belt is the correct model (belt style 5) and it is on correctly.\302\240..I have replaced the air filter (style F1). I thought that perhaps as it was getting older it was helping attribute to the smell. Again, not the case.\302\240..Finally, I have taken the vacuum cleaner completely apart and cleaned out every bit of dust, dirt, hair or what-have-you from each crevice inside and out. Surely, I thought, this would solve the problem. Again, you guessed it, that was not the case.\302\240..That hideous smell persists. Mechanically everything looked relatively sound when I had it apart. I couldn’t see any burn spots or wear on any bit of the vacuum.\302\240..Any ideas?\302\240.\015

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Several things cause a burning smell, such as a motor part is that broken or worn out, the motor is running too hot, you suck up a burning cigarette, or the rubber belt has snapped. The belt helps turn the brush roller that helps guide dirt and debris into the vacuum.
If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
Overheating due to clogged exhaust filter

The exhaust filter can also get clogged, causing a problem with the motor cooling. Therefore, you should also check the exhaust filter if the vacuum cleaner smells burnt. It is usually located on the top or back of the unit, right where the exhaust air comes out.

Replace filter every 3 to 6 months.
Rinse the filter

Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.

Consumer Reviews On Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaners

Consumers give high marks to some Dirt Devil models like the Breeze canister and the Featherlite bagged vacuum – where both get on average 4 out 5 stars based on over 200 ratings. That means that Dirt Devil has designed the perfect vacuum for the majority of home users.

No it`s not recommended to suck up water.
The bag itself acts as a filter to trap pet dander, allergens, dust, dirt, and contaminants to protect anyone better. High-quality bags are airtight and do not allow small particles to escape back into the room and air.
If the device is not creating sufficient suction or powering on, the motor could be obstructed. Unscrew the screws from the side of the Dirt Devil Gator. Once removed, notice the motor device (the largest one) and inspect to ensure no dirt or debris is obstructing or damaging the motor or its fans!
According to Lorna Smith from robot vacuum cleaner retailer Eufy Clean, a smell coming from even a bagless vacuum cleaner is usually generated from the reproduction of fermentation bacteria, and is closely linked to your habits and how you use it.
Vacuums cleaners can smell from for various reasons; pet dander, moisture was sucked up… The most common cause is old dirt sitting stagnant in the collection chamber, bags, or filters. Vacuum bags should be changed every four to six weeks or once full.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
In many cases, the smoke you see is actually mechanical pump oil vapor. Many people tend to think that whenever there is smoke emitting from the pump, it means there is something wrong with the machine. But, oil vapor or oil mist is a natural by-product of creating vacuum in an oil sealed mechanical pump.
Remove the filter and gently tap it on the inside of the dirt canister to remove the loose dirt and debris. The filter should be replaced at least once a year.
If the air filters are not replaced regularly, they eventually become clogged so much that air cannot pass through them. Clogged filters and coils prevent the air from heating or cooling. They also damage your HVAC system and increase your energy bill.
Dirt Devil is here for you to get rid all of your dirt and dog hair before your friends get to the door. The brand has introduced numerous technologies and features to its products, such as cyclonic filtration, HEPA filters, and powerful motors.
What Is The Average Life Expectancy Of a Carbon Filter? Carbon filters should be replaced after 18-24 months of continuous (24/7) usage. Although this may vary depending on the company product, it has been shown that carbon filters can last for up to four years.
Washing makes a standard HEPA filter unusable, so don`t wash a filter unless the manufacturer recommends it! Some filter types are washable. For example the activated carbon filter and prefilter in our Winix can both be rinsed with water to remove dust and chemicals, and reinstalled once completely dry.
Most manufacturers recommend you change your filter on average every 3-6 months. However, it is recommended to change your filter even earlier depending on usage and allergy care. Most newer vacuum models use more than one filter. Please refer to your manufacturer manual for further assistance on locating your filter.
And on the note of America`s vacuum production, it may surprise you to learn that very few of the major brands are not built within our borders. Dirt Devil, Eureka, Bissell, Electrolux, Kenmore & Hoover are made in China. Even Dyson is a Malaysian built vacuum cleaners, using Chinese made motors.
Dirt Devil is an American vacuum cleaner and floor care company.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems.
“We would recommend vacuuming at least once or twice a week—and more often if we have pets—with the right tools to remove dust quickly and effectively,” Patel advises.
Fine particles. Fine particles are no match for even the strongest vacuums. Construction dust, makeup, used coffee grounds, fireplace ash, and other fine particles can burn out the motor and be released back into the air. It`s best to sweep these items up to keep your vacuum – and yourself – safe.

Dirt Devil R088100. Cloth Was Sucked Into Hole Below Dirt Holder
ANSWER : Brad, Hopefully it is the belt that you smell burning. I would start by removing the underneath side of the vacuum head. Normally just a few screws that are meant to be remove for general maintanence and circumstances such as this. After removing the screws this should reveal the dirty side of life to you. You may need to remove the roller brush, and inspect the ends to make sure the brush rolls freely while holding the ends. If not the ends may need to be cleaned of hair and strings: ends should pop of and a shaft runs through the middle connecting them. Clean and replace. Move on up the path the dirt travels. The neck where the head and vacuum come together is the next jamming point, if this is where the cloth is lodged chances are the motor may have over heated due to clogging. Your vacuum may have a automatic shut off. You will need to contact Dirt Devil to see if there is a reset for the motor. There are propellers / fan blades at the end of the neck just before the motor housing. This is most likely where the clothe has logged itself causing the brushes on the electric motor to emit the burning smell, if you can remove all obstructions and the unit still does not turn on, check with dirt devil about the reset, Hope this helps.

My Dirt Devil Vibe bagless vacuum started giving off a burning smell. The brush roller was jammed with hair. Did I ruin the belt or something else?
ANSWER : It’s more likely there’s a clog in the hose somewhere, possibly where it connects to the power nozzle. Detach hose and check the PN.
.If there’s no clog in the PN, detach hose completely from machine and try to drop a marble or coin through the hose. If it doesn’t fall through, there’s a clog that needs removed/cleared. Hold PN end of hose tightly to tank of vacuum and turn on. That may be enough to **** the clog through. If not, use a canister or shop vacuum to blow the clog out.
