How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

1. The dirt canister may need emptied or the bag/filter may need to be replaced – follow the instructions in your Owner`s Manual based on your power unit type. 2. The hose may be clogged.
Airflow Issues

If the device is clogged, or the dirt cup is full, this may cause the unit to overheat. Unplug the unit and allow it cool, empty the dirt cup and clean the filter.

As you are pushing or riding along your floor the machine will distribute water and cleaning solution into the attached scrubber brush. The brush then vigorously scrubs the floor removing any dirt dust or debris and immediately gathers the dirty water and solution and deposits it into the machines recovery tank.
Scrubbers are air pollution control devices that use liquid to remove particulate matter or gases from an industrial exhaust or flue gas stream. This atomized liquid (typically water) entrains particles and pollutant gases in order to effectively wash them out of the gas flow.
Remove the brushroll and clean all hair, string, and lint from the brushroll bearings. If the vacuum cleaner brush still doesn`t spin after you clean the brushroll, consider replacing the brushroll.
Consumer Reviews On Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaners

Consumers give high marks to some Dirt Devil models like the Breeze canister and the Featherlite bagged vacuum – where both get on average 4 out 5 stars based on over 200 ratings. That means that Dirt Devil has designed the perfect vacuum for the majority of home users.

If your Dirt Devil Gator (Model Number: BD10100) isn`t starting or staying on for more than 15 seconds, you may need to replace the battery. Follow this guide to replace the battery to keep your Dirt Devil Gator in use! However before using this guide, you may not need to full replace the battery, just charge it!
If there is something that has become caught in the hose in another part of the system, the airflow will be reduced and can cause overheating and a shut down. Clear out hoses, attachments, and brushes of any hair, dirt, and debris. This will allow for restored airflow and should get things going again.
Dry scrubbers are typically composed of filters that catch and remove particulates. The most common type of dry scrubber is the fabric filter, which uses a layer of cloth or other porous material to capture particles. Wet scrubbers use a chemical reaction to remove particles from the gas stream.
A CO2 scrubber is essential for removing CO2 from the air. Air polluted with CO2 is pumped into the scrubber, which reaches an ion exchange resin that isolates the CO2 molecule from other gases.
Some disadvantages of wet scrubbers include corrosion, the need for entrainment separation or mist removal to obtain high efficiencies and the need for treatment or reuse of spent liquid.
Most wet scrubbing systems operate with particulate collection efficiencies over 95 percent.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
If your vacuum cleaner has lost suction power, it`s time to empty the container. Vacuum cleaners come with various foam or mesh filters. These might get clogged over time if not cleaned or replaced properly. This will cause your vacuum to lose suction.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
Black & Decker`s mini-vac – the DustBuster – was introduced to American consumers in 1979, but the company developed most of the inner workings for the device as the result of a partnership with NASA for the Apollo moon landings between 1963 and 1972.
The Dirt Devil (Dæmonium terra) is an evil incarnate spawned from the ground itself.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
Extreme temperatures, frequent short trips, and general everyday use could shorten the life of your battery to two to three years. If your car battery dies quickly, even after a jumpstart, it might be time for a new one.
You can do this by applying an overcharge to a fully charged battery using a regulated current of around 200mA (milliAmps) for a period of roughly 24 hours. This allows the battery`s terminal voltage to rise between 2.50 and 2.66 volts per cell, which helps to dissolve sulfate crystals.
The motor in your vacuum cleaner is essentially safe from damage, however, when it is exposed to conditions other than what it was designed for, it can fail. The most common reason for vacuum motors failing is overheating.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
Replace filter every 3 to 6 months.
Dirt Devil is here for you to get rid all of your dirt and dog hair before your friends get to the door. The brand has introduced numerous technologies and features to its products, such as cyclonic filtration, HEPA filters, and powerful motors.

Dirt Devil R088100. Cloth Was Sucked Into Hole Below Dirt Holder
ANSWER : Brad, Hopefully it is the belt that you smell burning. I would start by removing the underneath side of the vacuum head. Normally just a few screws that are meant to be remove for general maintanence and circumstances such as this. After removing the screws this should reveal the dirty side of life to you. You may need to remove the roller brush, and inspect the ends to make sure the brush rolls freely while holding the ends. If not the ends may need to be cleaned of hair and strings: ends should pop of and a shaft runs through the middle connecting them. Clean and replace. Move on up the path the dirt travels. The neck where the head and vacuum come together is the next jamming point, if this is where the cloth is lodged chances are the motor may have over heated due to clogging. Your vacuum may have a automatic shut off. You will need to contact Dirt Devil to see if there is a reset for the motor. There are propellers / fan blades at the end of the neck just before the motor housing. This is most likely where the clothe has logged itself causing the brushes on the electric motor to emit the burning smell, if you can remove all obstructions and the unit still does not turn on, check with dirt devil about the reset, Hope this helps.

Hello, I have a problem with my Eureka Powerline bagged upright vacuum. It has a 12 amp motor and is model #4352, Type D. It was probably bought new in 1998. My problem is, while vacuuming today the motor seemed to slow down all of the sudden and then began smelling like burning rubber. I shut the vacuum off to check for blockages but could not find anything blocked. When I then turned it on again it runs but seems to only be running at 1/2 the motor speed and still has the rubber buring smell.
ANSWER : It sounds like a rubber sealing in the motor has come loose and is being constantly rubbed against the walls of the motor with would cause the smell and loss of motor speed caused by the fricton of rubber against the rod so if you can get to the motor try to open it and see if you can get it if not take it to a small engine repair service hope this was helpful:)

The motor won’t run. There was interupted running
ANSWER : What model#? Plus check to see if their is a reset switch, sometimes on hoover the switches do go bad, but if the unit is new could be still under warranty

Dirt Devil 08130 will not run
ANSWER : I’m gonna guess that a wire has slipped out of the switch. Have seen it happen several times…sooo. The switches are no longer available, but you can build up the wire with solder and re-insert it into the switch and yer in business!

Motor runs fine and hose not clogged will not pickup dirt
ANSWER : This may sound silly, but have you checked the belt? A lot of Eureka vacuums use the vac motor to run the brush, and if the brush is not running the vacuum won’t pick up. Another thing to check is the condition of the fan blades.. if they get worn they will push air out of the exhaust ports, but not push enough air to pull the dirt into the vacuum bag. Another thing to check is the length of the bristles on the brush… you can change a lot of the bristle strips and save the cost of a whole brush roll.. All of these fixes are under $10.00 (Belt: $1-2, Brush Strip $3-6, Fan $5-10) at most places.
