How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

1. The dirt canister may need emptied or the bag/filter may need to be replaced – follow the instructions in your Owner`s Manual based on your power unit type. 2. The hose may be clogged.
Run cold water over the filter, turning the filter so the stream washes away all the dirt particles. Do not use soap, as it could ruin the filter. Do not use brushes or sponges for the same reason.
Airflow Issues
If the device is clogged, or the dirt cup is full, this may cause the unit to overheat. Unplug the unit and allow it cool, empty the dirt cup and clean the filter.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Check for a plugged hose:
Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.
Can you clean a HEPA filter? If your HEPA filter is not specifically labeled as washable or “permanent,” then the answer is no – while it may still filter the air it will have reduced effectiveness after washing.
HEPA filters are also not designed to be washed. Washing a true HEPA filter can easily damage it so that it can no longer filter properly. Plus, the amount of particles washing it will remove will be low anyway.

Soil and Plant Debris
Soil and plant debris can clog a vacuum, and damp or wet leaves can lead to mold in the bag or canister, so it`s best to use a broom or your hands to pick those up.
Regular vacuuming removes soil and dirt that can damage the carpet fiber and therefore reduce the useful life of the carpet.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
When do I need to change my HEPA Ray Filter? The EPA recommends sticking to the manufacturer`s recommendations, with most brands typically recommending a filter replacement every 60 to 90 days.
HEPA filters are limited to particulates. There are harmful gases and fumes that may just pass through a HEPA filter. HEPA filters may cause air to become too dry. Finally, some HEPA filters may produce ozone, which is an unhealthy gas that can irritate the lungs.

HEPA filters will not remove most viruses, because they are simply too small. HEPA filters will also not remove VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, as they are also too small. Still, HEPA filter technology can be combined with other technologies that will remove these things from your air too.
It can take your air purifier 30 minutes to clean air in a small room. For larger rooms, it can take up to 2 to 3 hours. Invest in an air quality monitor to test your air quality. The worse it is, the longer you`ll want your air purifier running.
You can do this by applying an overcharge to a fully charged battery using a regulated current of around 200mA (milliAmps) for a period of roughly 24 hours. This allows the battery`s terminal voltage to rise between 2.50 and 2.66 volts per cell, which helps to dissolve sulfate crystals.
A battery might need replacement if its volts suggest it`s gone bad. As your battery ages, it loses its capacity to hold an electrical charge. An old battery can cause some identifiable issues, especially when you`re starting your car.
To fix a clog in the hose, feed one end into a garbage bag, and poke the other end with the back of a mop pole, until you push the clog material out into the garbage bag. To fix a clog in the vacuum, whether it is a canister or bag, use your finger to feel for a clog. Pull as much of it out as you can and discard.
Add a few drops of soap or detergent into a bowl of hot water. Submerge the filter and squeeze it so it absorbs the cleaning solution. If the water becomes dirty, empty the bowl and refill with more soapy water. Once the water runs clear after soaking the filter, take it out and rinse the suds away.
“We would recommend vacuuming at least once or twice a week—and more often if we have pets—with the right tools to remove dust quickly and effectively,” Patel advises.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor, not contacting the carpeting?? Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.

I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.

Vacuum Problem My dirt devil vacuum is losing suction and keeps clogging. All the dirt keeps sticking to the screen by the filter and then it would stop working. Also the hose does not have a strong suction power either. So what can I do?
ANSWER : The Bissell can have several filters in it, depending on the model. Some have a round hepa filter that is covered with a foam sleeve. This filter is located at the bottom of the dirt cup. Others have a foam filter that is located under the dirt cup in a pull out drawer. Also, they can have a cylindrical separator above the dirt cup which can be removed and washed. They are usually a blue plastic and you reach in and turn it a 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to remove. If your machine has the hepa filter, when you remove the dirt cup, the filter is at the bottom and you turn the bottom 1/4 turn and the clear housing will come off to access the filter. You should also check the small filter on the machine just below where the cup sits. This will only be there if your machine has the hepa filter on it.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
