How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
Check For Clogs or Blocks In The Vacuum

Check the hoses, the filters, and throughout the vacuum, and clean out any blockages or clogs. Vacuums will likely also have a recommended cooldown time to ensure that the vacuum won`t overheat. You will need to wait for that time before you turn the vacuum back on.

This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine continues to overheat, please refrain from using it until it has cooled down sufficiently and then carry out the performance checks.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice.
Hi! Dyson has put as a safety feature that the machine will turn off after 8+ hours of use when heating. This is to avoid overheating the unit but also any accidents caused by leaving it running all day. Consider it a `sleep` feature.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.
In many cases, you probably can repair a Dyson yourself, especially when it comes to common issues (see below). However, even if your machine needs some extra TLC by a Dyson expert, it can be worth getting it repaired.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
As the cleaner head and filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odour. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum`s filter. We need to advise you to stop using your machine and request that you contact your local customer support team.
Give it a break

By letting the battery run down to empty at least once a month, you`ll help to prolong its life.

The Dyson V6 is designed so that you can store the unit on the charger. Storing the Dyson on the charger will not harm the battery and it is not necessary to use the unit until the battery is depleted.
Based on the latest survey results, Consumer Reports estimates that close to half of Dyson stick vacuums will develop problems or break within five years, compared with around a quarter of the stick vacuums from Shark, the most reliable brand for this type.
It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
Description. This genuine Dyson vacuum part is the reset switch for the Dyson DC24 and D25 uprights. This switch needs to be activated if you experience a power surge while vacuuming, and your vacuum turns off as a result.
When your Dyson no longer powers on even after charging the most likely cause is a damaged battery. This means the battery will no longer hold a charge and will need to be replaced. Once a new battery is purchased you can learn how to replace it by visiting our battery replacement page here.
The battery pack of the Dyson v6 Absolute provides 20 minutes of powerful, consistent suction on a 3.5-hour charge. It is easily removed and replaced.
Check Your Battery & Charger:

Also, make sure the charger is plugged in correctly too. Batteries don`t last forever depending on age and use. You may need to buy a new battery if your Dyson vacuum is turning on and off after only a few minutes of use.

The LED light on the end of the handle will pulse with a blue LED light when charging, and the light will go out when fully charged. It can take up to four hours to fully charge your battery.
5-year warranty

To view your machine`s full warranty terms and conditions, please visit the Dyson Support page and follow the prompts to select your Dyson machine`s Owner`s Manual.

Pet owners, we recommend 1-2 years between service, light use every 2-4 years between services. Heavy use serviced annually.
The most common cause of no power is the machine overheating and cutting out. In this case once the vacuum cleaner loses power leave it for at least half an hour and then try turning it back on again. If it comes back on again after an hour then clean your filters and check for blockages.

Hoover Windtunnel On/Off switch will not turn Off…Switch seems to work O.K. when pressed directly but not with handle switch…It will turn on but not off..Cam seems to be intact on switch actuator..How does switch come out? Thanx
ANSWER : Take the handle off, then remove the tool holder, then you can get to the switch. Just has tabs on each side of switch, depress them and push it out. These switches will do this after awhile, replacing them is usually the way to correct the problem.

The Vaccum is not turning on when i plug the hose into the wall. The hoover system will turn on when i turn the switch on at the base and wont go off till i turn the switch off. But it will not come on automatically when i put the hose in to the wall connections.
Many Thanks
Linda
ANSWER : You can test this out by taking a small metal spoon and with the bottom side of the spoon insert it into the vac outlet on the wall. you want to touch the two metal pins inside the vac outlet to test if the unit is the problem or the hose is the problem.
.
.If the unit starts, the hose should have a 3 year warranty on it. I recommend you have your nearest beam dealer check it out.
.
.If the unit does not start, it has a 7 or 10 year warranty, the circuitry should be replaced. Again have your nearest beam dealer check it out.

My Dyson DC 24’s beater bar switch didn’t actuate and the beater bar didn’t turn. When I brought it to a certified serviceman he told me that a wire interferred with the switch and all he had to do was move the wire out of the way of the switch. At the time the machine was under warrantee and it didn’t cost me anything. Now however, the machine is out of warrantee and the problem has returned. Does anyone know how to access the switch and move the wire out of the way?
ANSWER : Hi- I had the same experience but it turns out there’s a small trip switch if you’ve taken the brush out to clean it, it needs to be reactivated by pressing the small red button to the right of the brush… took me a year to figure this out! Been meaning to get in touch with Dyson. Not sure if this is the same problem that you have.

We have a dyson dc 07 animal the machine was working fine then switched off after returning to the machine minutes later it wouldnt switch on, i removed on off switch cover and used a short piece of wire across the brown wires flicked the wall switch and it worked, aha i thought faulty switch aquired a new one to no avail and now even the short piece of wire trick doesnt work, has the motor died do you think, it wasnt over heating or making strange noises prior to refusing to work
ANSWER : It could be the motor. I’m having to replace the brushes on my DC 05. It appears that you can only get brushes for the YDK motors in the DYSON, not the Panasonic motor. Which might be saying something about the YDK motors. What happens is that the carbon brushes wear down which is normal. However, the contact wire from the brush to its connector is set so that when the brush wears down, the wire is short enough to stop the spring etc from damaging the commutator. The end result is that you get an intermittent operation of the motor before it finally dies.
.I believe all the DYSONs come with the option of both motors and you cannot really tell which motor you have until you take the thing to bits. You also cannot change motors without changing various other parts on the hoover. On my DC 05 the writing on the YDK motor tells you which one it is.
.This website www. tasweb.org ,select the DC 05 option and scroll down tells you how to take the thing to bits. A search on google etc for your DC 07 may give similar results. Best of luck!

Dyson dc15 ball turns when off but not when switched on
ANSWER : Hi John,

I’m sorry to hear you’re concerned about your DC15. When the machine is switched on, the powerful suction causes the soleplate to seal closely with the floor surface. This may be why the machine feels a little heavier to steer when the machine is running.

I’d encourage you to give our Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US), so one of our advisors can run through some troubleshooting with you to make sure everything is correct with your machine.

We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

My Dyson DC07 will not turn on. I was just using it and moved to a new area and plugged it in and it turned on for a split second and then it turned off and now it won’t turn on at all. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Loose wire, bad switch, or thermal cut-out. In any event, you will have to use a voltmeter to troubleshoot the problem, there is no way of knowing the problem otherwise

I turn my dyson on and it runs for 5 min then turns off
ANSWER : The symptoms you describe are typical of overheating. That indicates that there’s a blockage somewhere. Follow the instructions in your user manual for removing blockages (or you can download a copy from Dyson website if you need to), and make sure the filters are clean too. That should solve the problem.

Hoover on off switch won’t turn off. I have to unplug the vacuum to stop it. I have dismantled the handle and now I can’t get the inditation in the handle to fit over the little silver knob. I saw there was an on/off switch under the handle that is controlled by a piece of the handle.
#1 question for the manufacturer is why don’t they put the switch on the outside instead of having gimicks that turn it on and off… arghhhhhhhh
ANSWER : Don’t know what model you have, but sounds like you will need to replace the switch. As far as your question, you will have to contact the manufacture for an answer. We only provide solutions to your problem and a model number would have helped.
