How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Check the machine

A high pitch whistle could indicate a seal is damaged or the machine is blocked. If the noise occurs without the Wand and Cleaner head, it is likely to be caused by either the bin or cyclone.

What should I do? If your vacuum cleaner whistles, this is usually a sign that your device can`t suck in sufficient air. Often, it`s the dust container or bag that`s full. Check these first and exchange them if necessary.
Sometimes your vacuum pulsates on and off or keeps dying when using the extra powerful `Max Mode`, which can be related to the charge of your battery. Try turning this function off by pressing the Max button on your vacuum.
It is fairly common to hear rattling sounds in your vacuum cleaner. Often if you vacuum up a piece of hard debris like crumbs you might hear an immediate rattling sound. The sound can continue as items move around inside of the vacuum`s hoses and inside the canister. However, the sound usually subsides quite quickly.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine continues to overheat, please refrain from using it until it has cooled down sufficiently and then carry out the performance checks.
A clogged filter in a Dyson vacuum can create a muffled sucking sound or a high-pitched squealing during use. Additionally, as the filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odor. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum`s filter.
This issue could be caused by a blockage in your machine. Please clean the machine and check for blockages. Unplug your Dyson personal purifying fan from the mains electricity supply before cleaning. Look for blockages in the air inlet holes on the shroud and the dome.
The noise your experiencing could easily be a blockage in the lower duct, else where in the machine or caused by the brush bar not being reinstalled correctly.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
If the filter bag or canister is too full, it cannot pick up any additional particles and will simply jam or the motor will overheat and shut down. So, when you suspect your unit is about 75 per cent full, empty it!
One method is as “Hg gauge (“HgV), where the scale starts at 0” Hg (atmospheric pressure) and goes up to 29.92″ Hg, which is perfect vacuum.
Hissing or Sucking Noises

Usually, when the leak isn`t too bad, you will hear hissing noises coming from the engine. This may also sound like whining sounds or whimpering sounds. For more severe vacuum leaks, the noise is sucking or suction, much like a vacuum cleaner.

Give it a break

By letting the battery run down to empty at least once a month, you`ll help to prolong its life.

The Dyson V6 is designed so that you can store the unit on the charger. Storing the Dyson on the charger will not harm the battery and it is not necessary to use the unit until the battery is depleted.
It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening. Make sure there`s no dirt lodged in the top part of the bin.
If you use a Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner, you`ll probably be familiar with a sort of “boing” sound whenever you stop cleaning as the motor winds down. But did you know that the “boing” sound is intentional and designed to give the device a bit of character? Don`t worry, we didn`t either.
In many cases, the smoke you see is actually mechanical pump oil vapor. Many people tend to think that whenever there is smoke emitting from the pump, it means there is something wrong with the machine. But, oil vapor or oil mist is a natural by-product of creating vacuum in an oil sealed mechanical pump.
5-year warranty

If the motor on your Dyson vacuum is faulty, it will need replacing. The video and step by step guide below will take you through your Dyson motor replacement.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.
Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked.

Dyson DC14 Animal Vacuum – terrible loud noise
ANSWER : I have purchased six Dyson DC14 vacuums on eBay at rediculously low prices as they were being sold “as is” because they made a “terrible noise” when the brush bar was engaged. Each of the vacuums I received were like new, literally, and did make the terrible noise that was described. For less than $25 each, I purchased replacement beater bars (brushrolls) from an eBay seller in England and ALL six of the vacuums work perfectly.
.
.When I dismanteld each of the units, some beater bars only had hairline cracks and and others were falling apart. I first purchased beater bars from eBay that were very cheaply made and broke within one or two weeks. The beater bars I got from England have been going strong in a commercial business for over a year now. That’s equivalent to 5 years use in a residence.
.
.Defective beater bars are more frequent than most people realize. I’d lay odds that is your problem but you will never know until the beater bar is removed and closely inspected. Some fractures of the plastic can be hard to see.
.
.Hope this helps.

When I vacuum w/ the brush control in the on position it make a really loud noise, almost like a grinding sound. I have looked at it and nothing seems to be wrong, but I notice that the pin that engages the belt seems to vibrate a bit, possibly creating the noise. It started when I accidentally got part of a plastic grocery bag caught in the brush. Could it have stretched a belt? Nothing is caught any other place and it only makes the noise when the brush in in the on position.
ANSWER : Yes, the belt could have been stretched and is now vibrating and hitting other parts and creating a noise if much of the bag got caught under the belt. If you have another belt for this vacuum, please put it on and see if the noise stops. If it does, then problem solved, if not let me know and we can try something else and you can send a picture or video to me of the problem.

Let me know how this works out for you.

Kirby Sentria Hi, I have a new Sentria & used it for the first time today. It was going fine & then I could smell smoke & it started to make a loud noise so I turned it off quickly. If I turn it on it immediately starts making the noise again & I can see it is all lit up inside like something is burning or sparking. I have checked the roller & it is moving & I have checked the fan which is moving & doesn’t appear to be damaged in anyway. This product is from the US & we are in the UK & we are us
ANSWER : Sounds like the motor burned up. not sure if travel adapters will handle a large load like a motor, around 8 or amps. power needs in US are 110 volts ac, 60 hertz.
I believe UK is 220 volts and 50 hertz.
usually when a vac is brought to europe you must change motor.
