Checking for blockages

It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening. Make sure there`s no dirt lodged in the top part of the bin.

If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
When your Dyson no longer powers on even after charging the most likely cause is a damaged battery. This means the battery will no longer hold a charge and will need to be replaced. Once a new battery is purchased you can learn how to replace it by visiting our battery replacement page here.
Most problems arise because of a blockage – if not a dirty filter or cyclone unit, then something could be caught in the wand or the brush bar. Once again, the lack of suction could be caused by a dirty filter or a blockage somewhere in the vacuum`s system.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums.
To fix a clog in the hose, feed one end into a garbage bag, and poke the other end with the back of a mop pole, until you push the clog material out into the garbage bag. To fix a clog in the vacuum, whether it is a canister or bag, use your finger to feel for a clog. Pull as much of it out as you can and discard.
Check the vacuum cleaner to see if it tripped a circuit breaker or blew a fuse. Check the circuit breakers, or fuses and, if it has tripped a circuit breaker or blown a fuse, simply re-set the breaker, or replace the fuse, and switch the vacuum on again.
Dyson Cyclone V10 cord-free vacuums are engineered to make a pulsing sound to let you know if something is preventing airflow from passing through the machine. The LED blockage indicator will also continue to flash for up to 1 minute.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
In many cases, you probably can repair a Dyson yourself, especially when it comes to common issues (see below). However, even if your machine needs some extra TLC by a Dyson expert, it can be worth getting it repaired.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
Even with the powerful suction for which the Dyson brand is known, the Dyson vacuum can get clogged. If this happens, you can easily remove the clog and get back to vacuuming quickly.
Interviewed by Fast Company (May 2007), Dyson asserted the importance of failure in one`s life, “I made 5,127 prototypes of my vacuum before I got it right. There were 5,126 failures.
Based on the latest survey results, Consumer Reports estimates that close to half of Dyson stick vacuums will develop problems or break within five years, compared with around a quarter of the stick vacuums from Shark, the most reliable brand for this type.
Pet owners, we recommend 1-2 years between service, light use every 2-4 years between services. Heavy use serviced annually.
The main difference between the Dyson V8 Animal and V8 Absolute is that the V8 Animal is designed to powerfully suck up and eliminate pet hairs.
Description. This genuine Dyson vacuum part is the reset switch for the Dyson DC24 and D25 uprights. This switch needs to be activated if you experience a power surge while vacuuming, and your vacuum turns off as a result.
Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked.
Your filters get clogged with bacteria, dust, smoke, mold, and other particles. These can all affect the air quality in your home as well as the performance of your vacuum`s cleaning abilities, if the filter is clogged you will find the suction and general performance of your vacuum will be minimized.
Again, due to the small particle size of baking soda or freshener product, these can clog the pores of your vacuum`s bag or HEPA filter. Or it can “cement” debris into the cyclones of your bagless vac! This can drastically reduce suction resulting in poor cleaning performance and cause clogs to form.
Fine particles. Fine particles are no match for even the strongest vacuums. Construction dust, makeup, used coffee grounds, fireplace ash, and other fine particles can burn out the motor and be released back into the air. It`s best to sweep these items up to keep your vacuum – and yourself – safe.
The simplest place to start: empty your dirt container. Debris in the main cyclone passage will cut suction rapidly. If the container was really full, you should also check the filters because they can get loaded with dust if the Dirt container is too full. Test the vacuum, and see if the suction is back.

How can I get my DAB radio working again?
I have a Sony XDRS100CD with DAB radio. The DAB radio has stopped working although I can still use the CD and get FM radio. The unit has a readout on the front that usually shows the time and this stopped working too, presumably because it got the time via the DAB radio.
The unit works from mains and batteries although I have only ever used it on mains.

The problem has been getting worse. It works, then cuts off. Then works and cuts off. Making sure the canister is not full. Time b/w it working is getting longer and longer. Almost seems this time when I change the outlet it is plugged into it works. But then shuts off quicker than it was doing before. I’m getting very frustrated.
ANSWER : We had exactly the same problem with our Animal. After the motor was replaced under warranty a different engineer came out and diagnosed it as the cyclone chamber itself being clogged.(the bit with the purple cylinders on it). This is completely unserviceable and it too was replaced under warranty – along with a second motor! Not the answer you wanted I’m sure but you’re wasting your time looking for a problem elsewhere. Ultimately the motor is pulling through a clogged chamber and you will burn it out! Hope this helps…

I have a Dyson Animal upright (purple). I took it apart to clean the cyclone chambers. When re-assembling the bottom closed before the opening rod was inserted. I can’t get the opening rod installed with the bottom opening closed. How do I open it? Thanks.
ANSWER : I looked in our DC07. I would try removing the top again and getting a long dowel or the opening rod, insert it down into the unit and PUSH. The opening rod opens the latch by pushing it, not pulling it. Here are some pictures of the latch. Top pic is in the unlock position. Bottom is the normal position.

I hope this helps.

Vitamix 5000 stopped working. It stops working each time I use it; while blending I first smell a burning smell and then blender stops and will not start again. After sitting overnight it works again next morning and repeat same process. Any ideas how to repair?
ANSWER : It has an internal thermal shutdown. Let it sit for a while and it will reset itself. You can expedite by putting the motor base in the freezer for a few minutes, or by blowing a hair dryer into the base of the motor.

My Dyson is clogged on top of the cyclones and I cannot find a way to open it up to get the clog out. Please help me.
I have the purple upright Dyson.
Thank you
ANSWER : Hi, Thankyou for using FixYa, We love to fix things.
.
.Hi your version of the Dyson is the Animal if its purple.
.
.Right, here we go.
.
.1. Firstly you have to detach the cyclone from the main spine, as you would when you wish to take it off to empty it. So you now have the Cyclone and the clear plastic bin in your hand.
.2 Next we need to empty the clear plastic bin, just do this as you normally would by pulling the little Silver lever which is underneath the handle. The handle i am refering to says Dyson on it, curved shape. This releases the bin flap and lets any debris fall out. So you now have the cyclone and the bin with the bin flap open.
.3. to seperate the Clear bin from the cyclone the bin flap must be open. At the top of the bin and the bottom of the cyclone at the front (directly down from the handle) you will see a purple lever attached to the cyclone and a clear handle on the bin itself. Simply push the purple lever upwards and the bin will seperate from the cyclone.
.
.4. You will now have access to the cyclone.
.
.5. To clean the cyclone properly i would suggest you powerwash it completly. You can also clean inside the cyclone as well as cleaning the wee holes at the top of it.
.
.6. I would then recommend you use a germ killer such as mild bleach on the cyclone. rinse then let dry before using. Do not let water get into the Dyson motor as this will damage it.
.
.7. You can also clean the bin using a pwer washer and bleach or Mr Muscle etc.
.
.8. Simply re-attache the bin to the cyclone. It just clicks back in.
.
.I hope you found this advise usefull
