Numatic Henry Bagged Canister Vacuum\015 1. I have a Henry HVR 200 Vacuum cleaner (has two switches – on/off switch and a hi/lo switch).2. Got the Henry about 2 years.3. Yesterday when using it started to produce a smell – an electrical burning smell.4. Other than the smell, there is no other symptoms – it sounds the same and has a decent ****.5. Thinking it was the cardon-brushes, these were checked and are still in good condition (did not fully remove the brushes from the motor – but saw that each had at least 7 mm of carbon left on them).6. Re-assembled the Henry and it still gives the electrical burning smell.7. The smell is more noticeable when the hi/lo switch is on hi.8. Is a new motor needed?Best, Simon \015

Burning smell can indicate motor damage

If you suspect that the motor is damaged, you should not continue to use the vacuum cleaner! The cause of motor damage is usually wear and tear or damage caused by prolonged improper use (e.g. overheating). In most cases, it is not worth repairing.

These are some of the common issues that could be causing the burning smell from your Henry: Your vacuum could be overheating. It may be blocked in some areas causing it to work too hard. The drive belt may be too worn down and coming to an end.
Henry does a great job of cleaning up all that dust, dirt and pet hair, and given regular maintenance, he won`t leave any unpleasant odours. Keep your Henry smelling fresh by changing his bag and cleaning his filter regularly.
Vacuums cleaners can smell from for various reasons; pet dander, moisture was sucked up… The most common cause is old dirt sitting stagnant in the collection chamber, bags, or filters. Vacuum bags should be changed every four to six weeks or once full.
That being said, an electrical fire can smell like the following: Burning Plastic: The acrid odor of an electrical fire is often described as that of burning plastic. This is because wiring insulation, connectors, and many other electrical components are made of plastic materials.
When your new electric range smells like burning plastic during its first use it`s likely that plastic packing material was left inside. Like the oily coating on some oven interiors, these materials are meant to protect oven components or secure them during shipping and installation.
Henry is fitted with a thermal cut out. If it has been running for an extended period of time, the overload will cut in and stop Henry from working until he has cooled down.
A common problem with Henry vacuum cleaners is the appliance running intermittently. If your hoover is cutting out when you move the cable where it attaches to the plug, then you`ll need to check the connections in the plug.
Henry`s filter is clogged up – Henry vacuum cleaners have a pre motor filter which is washable. It`s a good idea to wash your filter every time you replace the bag. Simply wash it with warm water and replace the filter once it is completely dry.
Carpet cleaner smells like burning and may be caused by overheating debris in the machine or a malfunctioning motor. To resolve the issue, unplug the cleaner, inspect for blockages, clean the filters, and check for damaged components. If the problem persists, contact a professional or the manufacturer for assistance.
Q: It smells like the belt is burning. What is wrong? A:It is likely the belt isn`t turning freely on the brush roll. Flip out the belt lifter handle and turn it clockwise until the green arrows line up.
Since most electrical wirings come with rubber or plastic insulation, an unusual burnt plastic smell can be a sign that you`re at risk of an electrical fire. When this smell is inhaled into the lungs, such toxic particles can make breathing difficult and cause severe respiratory issues such as bronchitis and asthma.
In general inhalation of plastic fumes can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, respiratory side effects such as aggravated asthma, skin irritations, headaches, nervous system damage, and other organ damage such as the kidney, liver, and reproductive system.
Its time to open the windows, air out the house and change that vacuum belt. If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
When a thermal cut off activates, it shuts the motor down. This prevents the motor from overheating to a point where it will no longer function and will need replacing.

Vacuum cleaners are often designed to turn themselves off if they hit a thermal cut-off point. Basically, if the machine is starting to overheat, there is an automatic system in place to prevent damage to your vacuum or other issues. The most common cause of overheating is blockage.
Problems can occur when overused or clogged filters cause the vacuum motor to overheat. This not only shortens the motor life but causes a loss of suction. In some cases, total motor burn out can occur.
Should the floor nozzle indicator light turn red it is a warning that the brush has become jammed and not turning. Switch the appliance off and disconnect the floor nozzle. Remove the brush by unclipping the release catch on the side and lifting the brush roll out.
Using Henry without a filter would not only cause instant damage to the motor but would also invalidate any warranty.
First we need to pull the clips out and remove Henry`s head. Now remove the pre-motor filter which itself should be replace about every 6 months if used daily, remove the old bag and dispose of it, and place the new bag over the bag connector ensuring that it is pushed all the way on.
The Commercial version has a longer power cable at 12.5metres long, whereas a standard Henry only has a 10-metre power cable. A stronger drum design intended for commercial applications.
Size & Practicality. The small and cylindrical shape of the Henry vacuum means that is very easy to wheel around and even more easy to store in your cupboard or dead space under the stairs. Larger, up-right vacuum cleaners often prove very cumbersome when it comes to storing them away but not the Henry!

Electrical Burning Smell from Henry HVR200 Vacuum Cleaner
ANSWER : Hi! Highly unlikely that you need a new motor.  Highly likely that you need new carbon brushes.  The smell is caused by excessive sparking between the worn brushes and the copper commutator segments.  Most carbon brushes (and from memory I suspect this includes Henry’s) have a copper wire buried in their last few millimeters, and you really need to change them before that becomes exposed.   The longer you run it like this, the more likely you are to damage the commutator, so change them sooner rather than later.  When you change the brushes, you can smooth off the commutator with very fine abrasive paper (the objective is to smooth it, not scratch it!), and then blow all the dust away (or **** it away if you have another vac, of course). .Incidentally, you don’t say if you are using a paper bag in your Henry. Some people, because the top-hat filter is so good, try to manage without a bag.  This is false economy!  You should always use a bag..I hope this helps! The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Burning Smell Hi, I have a Rainbow E series that when I run the vacuum there is a burning smell. I have cleaned the entire unit and filter but still have the smell? I am afraid that the motor will burn out?
ANSWER : Check the carbon motor brushes, there might be arcing on the armature. New brushes may help if the armature is ok.

Burning Smell coming from the moter
ANSWER : This could be a motor problem. There is always a slight blue arcing that occurs when an electrical motor runs and can be visible through the exhaust vent, but any excessive arcing indicates a problem. If the carbon brushes are sticking, this will cause excessive arcing and can be corrected by an experience service person, but if there is any electrical failure, the motor would have to be replaced. There are no parts available for these motors and the expense of replacing an armature (the likely culprit) would be more than the motor. This could also be as simple as a worn belt, but usually, belts will not produce the smell your describing. When a motor is burning out, it will produce an acrid odor that will linger for a long time.
