How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The air filter traps particles as the air travels through the vacuum cleaner. If the filter is clogged, the vacuum cleaner will not have proper suction. If your vacuum filter is clogged, refer to your owner`s manual for cleaning instructions.
Press release button and lift off dust cup. To empty debris, press lever to release bottom lid. Place vacuum in upright position.
Locate the filters on your Eureka Power Speed vacuum. There may be a HEPA filter and a foam filter. Remove the filters and tap them gently on the side of a trash can to remove any excess debris. Rinse the filters in warm water and gently squeeze out any excess water.
Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
If all your filter needs is a good cleaning, though, rinse it under warm water until it runs clear, then gently wring out the excess water and set it aside to dry. Finally, use the can of air duster to remove excess dust from inside the vacuum.
Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.
Can you clean a HEPA filter? If your HEPA filter is not specifically labeled as washable or “permanent,” then the answer is no – while it may still filter the air it will have reduced effectiveness after washing.
What`s happening with your vacuum cleaner is that a clog has built up and debris being agitated by the roller is spitting out or stirring up dust without sucking it in.
Use your vacuum cleaner`s hose with a nozzle or brush attachment to clean your non-washable HEPA filter. Run the attachment over the filter until you`ve removed all debris. Take care not to puncture the filter with the vacuum attachment.
If the filter isn`t clean, it can impact the performance of the vacuum. Dirty vacuum filters can restrict airflow so the suction won`t be as strong.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
We have two possible ways of adjusting the pressure in a vacuum system: first, by changing the pumping speed (altering the speed of the pump or throttling by closing a valve); second, through admission of gas (opening a valve).
Founded in 1909 in Detroit, Michigan Eureka vacuums have been in American`s homes for more than a century. Now we`re building on that experience with innovative cleaning technology to help you clean for years to come.
The Full Dust Bag Indicator in On

It is often recommended, however, that dust bags are replaced when they`re around two thirds full or once a month. Daily and extensive use of vacuum cleaners will create a need to replace dust bags more frequently.

If your vacuum has a disposable bag, remove and discard it. For vacuums that use a plastic canister, remove the bin and dump the contents in the trash. Disassemble as much of the dust cup as possible for easier and more thorough cleaning.
A full bag will reduce the effectiveness of your vacuum cleaner, as well as contribute to poor air quality. It could even cause damage to the machine itself which could be expensive or impossible to repair. The take-home message is: check vacuum bags regularly and replace them when they are more than half full!
How Often to Clean a Bagless Vacuum. Give your bagless vacuum a thorough cleaning every six months, or more frequently if you`re a member of the frequent vacuumer club (having shedding pets automatically makes you a member!).
Bagless vacuums are not the best choice for those with allergies or those sensitive to dust. They can be messy when emptied and release particles back into the air.
Replace the filter

The vacuum filter will stop all the fine particulates and dust from getting into the inner workings of your vacuum, but can also store a lot of the odour causing material. We advise replacing your vacuum filter every 6 months to maintain performance and to prevent those smells.

You`ll need it—the filter prevents dust from blowing out of the top while you`re cleaning. For wet surfaces, however, you`ll need to remove the filter entirely. Liquids will damage filters, and you could even potentially ruin your vacuum if you suck up water before removing the filter.
Because water filtration vacuums use water as a filter, they have no problem cleaning up wet messes. So, in essence, the difference is all in the way that the dirt and air gets filtered, which in all reality works much better with water than with a general bag or filter.
Water filtration vacuums offer more thorough cleaning than traditional vacuums because they trap and lock all the dirt and tiny dust particles in the water chamber without being kicked back into the air you breathe. This is especially beneficial for anyone who has asthma or allergies!

Eureka bagless has no suction. Filters washed with each use and canister empty. Some hose suction when covered but runs right over lint and crumbs

Suction Cover The suction cover of my Eureka Deep Steam 2575A is broken – the tabs snapped off of the cover so I am unable to screw the suction cover back on. I need to purchase a new suction cover but can’t find one anywhere. Anyone know what I can do? thanks

I had used Dyson DC08 to **** out a wet car carpet. A few days later when using the V/C, there was a burning smell. Subsequently I washed the flexible hose, changed the pre-filter and post filter , but I wrongly put the pre-filter in the spot for the post filter. When the V/C was next used, there was again a burning smell and sparks. The filters were switched, but the V/C would not re-start.
What shall I do?

No suction Hello – any help with this would be much appreciated!

I just changed the bag and filters. The machine runs, seems normal, but there is no suction. There is no blockage of the hose, as indicated by the fact that that little viewer window above where the hose connects to the unit is not showing the red portion that it shows when there is something blocking the hose (god, this is hard to describe!).

If I disconnect the hose and put my hand over the hole, I feel some suction. But

ANSWER : Well, it actually sounds like there is a blockage. Try removing your hose and dropping something through it, like a quqrter. If it comes through, no clog. If it is clogged, I believe that machine has a blower on the upper part of the cleaner (maybe in the bag compartment towards the top. You can take out the filter holder and plug the hose in there and run the unit . Does the blockage come out? If not, Try shaking the hose, or you can put a stiff wire in it to try to free it. Do not run water through it. If there is no blockage at all, then you will probably need to take it to a service center. But I am pretty confident that we are looking at a clog situation. Let me know if this fixesya! Thanks, Rene (vacuum Doctor)

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. I have a new bag in, checked the hoses for clogs have the motor cover off showing motor runs. Problem is vacuum has no suction in hose area, cover off where bag is and the air blows out of filter. hoses are clean no blockage.
ANSWER : Have you checked the filter? Many vacuums have a filter under or behind the bag to keep dust and dirt out of the motor. If this gets clogged the motor can’t get any suction. Also look for holes in the hose or in the small segment between hose and bag.

Bissell lift off vacuum about 4yrs old. Extremely noisy. OK until before Christmas but getting worse every time it’s used. Washable filters washed, HEPA filter replaced. brush bar cleaned of every scrap, hose empty, everything that can be cleared has been. Noise high pitched, screeching and can only bear to use it for a few seconds at a time. Suction OK.
ANSWER : Sounds like a bad motor bearing. If it is, then you would have to replace it. Could be the brush roll, did you check the ends to make sure they turn easily?
