How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The package comes with 1 HEPA filter, 3 foam filters, 3 felt filters.
Shark vacuums have an excellent filter system consisting of one or two (depending on the model) thick foam filters plus one made of felt; and a HEPA filter.
All of the filters that come with your Shark vacuum, including HEPA filters on models that include them, can be cleaned or washed for re-use.”
Please remember to change your foam/felt filter every 3 months and your HEPA filter every 6 months, otherwise your vacuum will lose suction and won`t clean efficiently!
To access the filters, whether it`s a Shark cordless vacuum or one of the brand`s upright models, remove the dust canister and pull out the felt and foam filters from the top of the dust canister. Now remove the post-motor filter – if you have a Shark cordless vacuum, you`ll find it in the vacuum`s main unit.
To keep your Shark vacuum cleaner performing at its best, it`s important to regularly clean your filters, and replace them when necessary with a genuine, compatible replacement part.
The HEPA filter provides efficient filtration of dust and allergens. We recommend replacing the HEPA filter every 3 years.
Simply tap off loose dirt and then rinse them under a tap. Only use water – do not use soap. Always let the filters air dry completely before reinserting them. You can also tap loose dirt off filters between washes as needed.
Shark Anti-Allergen Filtration Vacuum Cleaners

Some HEPA vacuums don`t effectively seal their filter in, so dust, allergens and irritants can be blown out into your home. That`s why Shark invented Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, containing our high efficiency filters within a completely sealed vacuum cleaner unit.

Unfortunately, you can`t actually clean a true HEPA filter—it must be replaced. “Water would likely damage the sheets of fibers and would remain trapped in the pleats,” explains Myatt.
HEPA filters are also not designed to be washed. Washing a true HEPA filter can easily damage it so that it can no longer filter properly. Plus, the amount of particles washing it will remove will be low anyway.
Foam Filters: Usually circular, foam filters can be cleaned with soap and water. Pleated Paper or Synthetic Cartridges: These inexpensive filters are often not washable but you can clean them several times before replacing them.
If you are using a vacuum with a HEPA filter in a strictly residential setting, the filter should last you around two to three years before you need to replace it. It depends on how much you use it, but regular use based on an average cleaning schedule should keep it doing the job for between 24 to 36 months.
Because they force air through their filters to clean it, leaving an air purifier on consistently is the only way to maintain the highest possible level of air quality in a room or home. When your air purifier is turned off, it will stop filtering the air in that space.
Full Dust Cup

If the dust cup is full, empty and clean it. If the smell remains, remove filter cup and wash foam pads. Additionally, the dust cup may need to be replaced, for proper replacement, click here.

This clogging will reduce the effectiveness of the vacuum and make it less able to pick up debris and dirt, and if the filter is not replaced regularly, it can release dust and other allergens back into the air, creating an unhealthy environment for asthma and allergy sufferers,” explains Mathew Morris, owner of Go …
Failing to replace a filter means you won`t get the same high-quality water filtration, and you`ll also be at risk of drinking water that`s contaminated with bacteria and other contaminants that have leached into your water from the degraded filter media.
Most manufacturers recommend you change your filter on average every 3-6 months. However, it is recommended to change your filter even earlier depending on usage and allergy care. Most newer vacuum models use more than one filter. Please refer to your manufacturer manual for further assistance on locating your filter.
Airflow is crucial to maintaining strong suction and allowing your vacuum to preform to the best of its ability. Even though these filters are washable, it is recommended that you replace the filter every six months for optimum performance.
HEPA filters are not designed to be washed and reused. Doing so will cause damage to the fibers which makes the filter ineffective and it will become void of its job. Once a filter has reached the maximum capacity of harmful particles, it will need to be replaced with a fresh, new one.
It`s generally recommended to change them along these timelines: True HEPA: 8,760 usable hours or about every 12 months. Activated Carbon: 8,760 usable hours or about every 12 months. Mesh Pre-Filter: Should be cleaned every 2-4 weeks.
How frequently does your air purifier need an air filter replacement? It`s recommended that you change your filter every 12 months. If you run your air purifier frequently or are experiencing a lot of indoor air pollution, you may need to change the filter more often.
Add a few drops of soap or detergent into a bowl of hot water. Submerge the filter and squeeze it so it absorbs the cleaning solution. If the water becomes dirty, empty the bowl and refill with more soapy water. Once the water runs clear after soaking the filter, take it out and rinse the suds away.
The Shark Navigator® Swivel Pro Complete Upright Vacuum combines powerful suction for deep cleaning and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology® with a HEPA filter to trap dust and debris.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Our problem with our Rainbow E Series is that it has sucked water up and blown it out through the lower part of the hepa filter, making the filter wet and dirty. This had happened before and the repair shop did not see any problems with the machine, so we replaced the filter and were very carful not to overfill the tank and to change the water often. Now it has happened again and ruined another filter. Do you know what could be causing this issue? Can the filter be cleaned or will a new one be

ANSWER : This isn’t really a problem that can be fixed here on Fixya rather than advise you as a buyer. You’d have to contact the people/company you have purchased the filters from and take it up with them regarding the postage. Hope you get a decent reply.

I had used Dyson DC08 to **** out a wet car carpet. A few days later when using the V/C, there was a burning smell. Subsequently I washed the flexible hose, changed the pre-filter and post filter , but I wrongly put the pre-filter in the spot for the post filter. When the V/C was next used, there was again a burning smell and sparks. The filters were switched, but the V/C would not re-start.
What shall I do?
ANSWER : Hi there,

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The best way to clean the HEPA filter is to take it outside and use a blower over the trash can and blow off the dust and dirt, or use things like an old paint brush and brush it off, or you can vacuum it off with another canister vacuum or shop vac if you have an extra one. For the best filtration is to replace it, there fore the air flow will catch most of the dust and dirt and then you would have to watch how fast it gets dirty and then do the maintenance.

We are unable to find a replacement part that the filter attaches to in the dirt cup on our Eureka Boss Pro Model 411. This part seals the top of the dirt cup and holds the filter in place. What is the part name or model number for the replacement?
ANSWER : I just called Eureka (1-800-282-2886) and asked for the dust cover lid. It was part number 61538-1. They said they could ship it to me or I could call one of the authorized service centers nearby to see if they had one. I wasn’t in a hurry and the total to ship it to me was just under $10.

How do i install a filter on a eurika optima upright model 431? I was given a filter model hf-7 and was wondering how it would fit.
ANSWER : Hi nena,

The hf7 model is not made to fit the 431 series.

I believe I can find the filter and instructions for you if you give me the entire model number.
The 431 series include several models.

Do you have your instruction manual?
