How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The Nozzle is not Fully Attached

The nozzle needs to be completely attached so that the power can reach the brush. When the vacuum head is on the floor, push down on the handle to make sure the connection is complete. If this does not work, something may be blocking the connection. Clear out any debris and try again.

Yes. Shark vacuum cleaner hoses can be replaced. When looking for the right hose replacement, make sure you have your Shark vacuum cleaner model number handy. There are my different Shark models and not all hoses fit the same vacuum.
If you checked your brush roll, floor setting, and belt but your brush roll is still not spinning, that means you probably need a Shark micro switch replacement. This small switch tells the vacuums brush when to start spinning.
If the vacuum does not stand on its own, the vacuum`s latch may be broken. Call customer service to inquire about latch replacement options. When you buy the vacuum you have a 5-year warranty, so broken pieces are easily replaceable. You can purchase replacement parts either on Amazon.com or on Shark`s website.
Check if the mop is properly plugged into the outlet and turned on. If it is on and still not functioning, try resetting the mop by plugging it into a different outlet. Add water to the tank if it is empty then try selecting the `STEAM` setting once more.
Vacuum leaks can be caused by a cracked intake hose.
1 Press handle release button to detach handle (or handle with extension wand). 2 Press red nozzle release button (h), place foot on nozzle and pull the canister up.
Unfortunately, all vacuums are not built the same and these products, for the most part, are not repairable when it comes to electrical motors, cords or switches. Shark does not offer any replacement parts for their vacuums, only filters. We do service Shark vacuum when it comes to tune-ups and cord replacments.
Vacuum hoses tend to be anywhere between 3/16 inches in their inner diameter and 5/8 inches.
Yes. SharkBite fittings can be reused for testing purposes but any fitting used repeatedly for testing should not be used in a permanent installation.
SharkBite fittings are designed to create a leak-proof seal. When a SharkBite fitting does leak, the first thing you`ll want to do is see if the pipe is correctly connected to the fitting. By disconnecting and reconnecting the pipe, you may fix the problem.
Another possible disadvantage to using SharkBite fittings is that many plumbers feel that these fittings simply aren`t strong enough to create a tough, durable connection. Although there`s no evidence to substantiate that believe, those plumbers simply trust soldering for their permanent plumbing projects.
Roller brush is not spinning

Check to make sure the vacuum is switched to the correct mode. The switch should be in the Power and Brushroll mode to make the roller spin. If it is in just the power mode the roller will not move. The brushroll indicator light should be green when working.

Filters need to be cleaned

Rinse the filters with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Let the filters dry fully before putting them back into the vacuum. If your vacuum is still not picking up dirt, you may need to replace the filter.

Your Shark® vacuum may not be designed to stand up on its own. When taking a break from cleaning, you may need to lean it against furniture or a wall, or lay it flat on the floor.
Our cordless handheld vacuum cleaner models are covered by a 12-month guarantee extendable to a total guarantee period of 2 years subject to registration. Our Steam Mops are covered by a 12-month guarantee, extendable to a total guarantee period of 2 years subject to registration.
High Temperatures and Heat Aging Cause Hydraulic Hose Failure. When hoses are exposed to extreme temperatures, they begin to lose their flexibility and stiffen. High temperatures cause the plasticizers in the elastomeric inner tube to break down, which then hardens and begins to crack.
Usually, leaks at the top of the hose are caused by a deteriorating washer. Before using a new hose, locate the washer and make sure it`s properly inserted into the coupling. Inspect the washer when you take your hose out of storage or put it into storage each season. Check the washers on your hose accessories, too.
Engine loses power or won`t start

If the pressure is too high, it can cause a head gasket to be pushed out, can cause cylinder head hardware to break or in some cases, will cause detonation inside the engine.

Vacuum leak repair cost varies widely, depending on what is causing the leak. You could end up spending anywhere from $100 to $1,500. If it`s just a hose that`s leaking, and the leak is obvious, the mechanic just needs to install a replacement hose. Expect to spend $50-$100 on labor, plus the cost of the hose.
Dangers of Ignoring Vacuum Leaks

As the vacuum pressure spurts out of the leaking hoses, it can overheat the engine, disable the engine systems it powers, and even create a damaging compression and timing issue.

Generally, the vacuum hoses on your vehicle are made from rubber and are supposed to last for a lifetime. The rough conditions that exist under the hood of your vehicle usually lead to these rubber hoses becoming damaged over time.
The main reason why a vacuum may be emitting a smell of burning rubber is a broken belt or an object is suck. Excess hair or fur caught around the roller brush can also cause this issue. Turn off your vacuum and let it cool before doing anything.
Please remember to change your foam/felt filter every 3 months and your HEPA filter every 6 months, otherwise your vacuum will lose suction and won`t clean efficiently! Our set of replacement filters for Shark Navigator Lift-Away, are WASHABLE and REUSABLE.

Hose Problem The hose broke just above the cuff on the inlet end of the hose.  I found that the hose doesn’t thread into this cuff but appears to be heat bonded in some way. Can I get a replacement cuff or do I have to replace the hose?
ANSWER : Looks like you can just get the hose, part #38479-4, It should just screw into the adapter or it may be glued in.

My dyson slim vacuum doesn’t switch from hose to floor mode. I thought the foot lever was broken. I realigned it but it doesn’t switch now from floor mode to hose mode. I take out the hose and I can see the white part. I thought it should move as you go from upright to recline position of the handle.
ANSWER : The changeover valve is not activating – call the Dyson helpline – they’ll set you up for a repair with a repair dealer in your area.

Replaced internal pump. Color coded hoses for replacement. Marker has worn off hoses. Need proper routing of hoses from clean water tank, to heater to spray nozzles. An internal schematic of hose routing is preferred.
ANSWER : Hi
.
.Thanks for using FixYa. Please remove the top cover of your Bissell cleaner. Now place the Auto-Mix selector knob to the water only position. Turn the cover over. You will notice an angle on the top of the piston. This will fit between a couple of plastic ridges on the top cover by the selector screw.
.Now angle the piston slightly forward and engage the angled cut in the top of the piston with the screw thread and pull back. Turn the screw to the high traffic position and replace the cover. Apply a very little amount of silicon grease around the Auto-Mix piston ‘O’ ring, it will ease the re- installation of the cover.

Floor attachment does not suction, no clog in the hose, hand held works when dettached from floor attachment
ANSWER : Have you checked the floor head? Use a pipe cleaner or twisted metal to carefully and gently see what’s in there. It sounds like dirt or something has definately sealed up the main suction channel.
