How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Sounds like your Henry has a blockage in the hose or the dust bag is full. Here are some steps to help check and clear Henry`s problem. Pull out the two clips holding the top of the machine to the drum and lift off the machine top (HEAD). Lift out the white filter and remove the dust bag from the tube in the drum.
Henry`s filter is clogged up – Henry vacuum cleaners have a pre motor filter which is washable. It`s a good idea to wash your filter every time you replace the bag. Simply wash it with warm water and replace the filter once it is completely dry.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
Vacuum cleaners are fairly simple machines. They need power to be transmitted to the vacuum to create a suction force that lifts debris. So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
To fix a clog in the head, flip it over and look inside. Use your fingers to physically pull out the clog, or the dull end of a thin tool (like a screwdriver), to push it out. Allow clog to fall and manually discard of the material. You may also need to disassemble the brush head to do this.
That`s no surprise: according to manufacturer Numatic, every Henry is “designed, tested and engineered to last a whopping 25 years”.
Henry (also known as Henry Hoover) is the brand name given to a canister vacuum cleaner made and sold by Numatic International, and is the only mass-produced consumer vacuum cleaner still made in Britain.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
If oil or solvent gets into the pumping chamber it will gum up the dry carbon that normally provides the lubrication for the vanes. This will cause the rotor to seize-up in the pump.
The most common reason for vacuum motors failing is overheating. Most `dry` vacuums have a flow-though motor. These motors use the air they have sucked up the dust with, to cool themselves. When there is a blockage, flow-though motors are unable to cool themselves due to the lack of airflow.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Quite simply, apart from the colour, there is NO DIFFERENCE. Both vacuum cleaners have exactly the same specification. Both have powerful 620 watt motors with high and low settings, giving them truly excellent suction. In fact, it`s not just the power, it`s something to do with the design of Henry and Hetty.
Empty the bag

This may seem obvious, but overloading the vacuum bag will damage the functionality of the appliance. If the bag gets too full, this will put a strain on the motor, resulting in a loss of suction. It depends on how often you use the vacuum, but it`s recommended that you change the bag every six months.

Henry does a great job of cleaning up all that dust, dirt and pet hair, and given regular maintenance, he won`t leave any unpleasant odours. Keep your Henry smelling fresh by changing his bag and cleaning his filter regularly. Lift off the top of the machine. Remove the white filter.
Numatic vacuums are ideal for use on site and in the workshop. Numatic hoovers, also knows as Henry hoovers, are lightweight and robust, so they can cope with tough cleaning tasks whilst still being portable.
If your filter is stained or smelling bad do not wash it. Henry filters aren`t washable. You could use bag fresheners to improve the smell of the air flowing through your Henry. By the way you can buy a new Henry filter should you need to.
When the pump begins to fail, it produces less suction which helps to provide pressure to the brake master cylinder and provides additional pressure inside the brake lines. Eventually the lack of pressure in the brake system works its way up to the pedal.
Its time to open the windows, air out the house and change that vacuum belt. If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.

The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.

The steam mop was only used 3 times.stopped working. It has now stopped working altogether. I have only had it for a month. I did not save the receipt because after the third time working I thought it was okay. I am very disappointed and have a hand shop vac of Sharks which has been working for a year. I have been discouraged from buying another one of your products now that the steam mop has quit working after 3 times. I followed the exact instructions how to use it. Model S3101/ 120V 60HZ

Hetty hoover not working. It was working ok until I opened it up to search the bag for a missing jigsaw piece and I put it all back and I hoovered the mess on the floor, then switched off and switched on and hoover would not work? Is there a cut off button on Hetty hoovers?
ANSWER : Know cut off switch, its just not getting power ? 2 things its ether at the wall plug or in side the unit. I have never found a fuse in side them , so it may be just a lose wire did you try other plugs in the house . good luck DFD

The problem has been getting worse. It works, then cuts off. Then works and cuts off. Making sure the canister is not full. Time b/w it working is getting longer and longer. Almost seems this time when I change the outlet it is plugged into it works. But then shuts off quicker than it was doing before. I’m getting very frustrated.
ANSWER : We had exactly the same problem with our Animal. After the motor was replaced under warranty a different engineer came out and diagnosed it as the cyclone chamber itself being clogged.(the bit with the purple cylinders on it). This is completely unserviceable and it too was replaced under warranty – along with a second motor! Not the answer you wanted I’m sure but you’re wasting your time looking for a problem elsewhere. Ultimately the motor is pulling through a clogged chamber and you will burn it out! Hope this helps…

How can I get my DAB radio working again?
I have a Sony XDRS100CD with DAB radio. The DAB radio has stopped working although I can still use the CD and get FM radio. The unit has a readout on the front that usually shows the time and this stopped working too, presumably because it got the time via the DAB radio.
The unit works from mains and batteries although I have only ever used it on mains.
ANSWER : I have the same problem… did you ever get a fix..

Water is not being discharged. I have filled the reservoir that holds the carpet cleaner fluid And I have filled the water container. I know how to use the cleaner, it has always worked, But now, no water is being discharged to the carpet. I turn it on, squeeze the trigger, but nothing comes out. The wheel that is suppose to spin (to indicate that water is being discharged) is not spinning. Everything else works. I.e. the suction works, and the hand held accessories work.
ANSWER : That means that the pump belt is worn and it needs to be replaced. You can get a replacement belt and view the manual here:

Water and cleaner not coming out, The machine is only 6m old and was working fine, I have cleaned every where I can to see if there was a blockage but nothing is working. The heater is working, there is a suction but the water and soap will not realease when triger is pulled. it will not work on on the tool spay.
ANSWER : Check the complede length of the hose. You may find a crimp in the most inconvenient place. You say you cleaned everything … can you blow through the hose where the cleaner comes out? (don’t drink anything!)

I have a 2 fluorescent light fixture in my bathroom. The right side light quit working. I took the starter out of the left side and put it in the right and it worked. Starter, right? I bought a package of 2 Leviton starters FS 2 15w. They didn’t work. Thinking bad, I returned it for another package. Still not working. The original starter is a Sylvania FS 2. Is it possible to have FOUR bad “new” starters? Do I need to replace it with the EXACT same starter? This light fixture is 38 years old. No
ANSWER : It is not likely that you had 4 bad starters.I assume you have more modern lights in it too(not 30 yrs old). Here is a link to Sylvania. It may be just that it requires certain something(who knows what)that only Sylvania has.It seems strange because they are all basically the same and a generic one seems like it would work.I also googled flourescent light starters and under one that talked about operation,it did refer to some older models. But like I said,it probably has newer lights so who knows what the heck.Well, here you go.You may also just want to call Sylvania and ask where you can find a replacement instead of paying $5 to ship $2 worth of parts.
