GE 106766 Bagged Canister Vacuum\015 I have a problem. It occurred with our first 106766 and it was replaced under warranty, but this time the model is out of warranty. The power connector for the electric hose assembly has a slanted-prong plug that fits into the power outlet bezel (part 3 on the attached link) and gets power from the Power Outlet connetor (part 20, ditto.) The problem is the cord won’t stay in, hence no power gets to the agitator. If I push down on the cord hard, the power goes on, but release the pressure and it immediately stops.Question: is it more likely to be the bezel, or the connector, or the Electric hose assembly cord itself that needs replacing? Nothing seems visibly damaged. The male end of the electric hose assembly is clean and not worn. Since the two connector parts together cost a whopping six DOLLARS (or purt’ near) I’m hesitant to order both to solve one problem. But I’d save on shippin’ if I order ’em both at the same time, right?(Sorry for the vernacular. Just slipping into my repairman persona. Helps me think.)I checked out the working drawings on this site: http://www.onlinevacuumparts.com/ps-213-7-ge6850-106766-canister-main-unit.aspxThank you for your help.**** in Maplewood, NJ\015

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Use an extension cord: If the power cord of your vacuum cleaner is too short to cover the entire room, use an extension cord. This will help to keep the cord taut and prevent it from retracting into the vacuum. Straighten the cord: Before you start vacuuming, make sure that the power cord is straight and not tangled.
They work on a pair of rotatable wheels inside a storage space that houses the entire length of the cord. When a user pulls the cord, extending it, the ratchets lock automatically, preventing the cord from rolling back up into its original storage position.
Twisted Cord – Oftentimes we see that the rubber exterior of a cord is very twisted and disfigured by one of the ends of the vacuum. This is caused by the user either winding the cord from the plug to the machine or from the machine side to the plug with the plug still in the outlet.
Clogs Cause Vacuum Spitting

What`s happening with your vacuum cleaner is that a clog has built up and debris being agitated by the roller is spitting out or stirring up dust without sucking it in.

No. Never use duct tape as an alternative to electrical tape. Duct tape is strong, but it can`t wrap as tightly around wires and contains cloth fibers which can be an extreme fire hazard.
Retractable Cord Reels

They use a spring mechanism to provide the retraction force. As the cord is uncoiled and pulled out for use, tension builds up on the steel torsion spring. Once the electrical power is no longer needed, the stored energy in the torsion spring is released, retracting the cord back to the reel.

Running Over the Cord

That same motion that forces the dirt up into your vacuum cleaner can fray or damage the exterior of the cord. Over time, even the best cords will start to show damage, making them unsafe for use.

It`s also important to pay attention to the vacuum cords. Tishko recommends checking them daily. Replacing a cord might cost $85 in labor and up to $130 for the new part.
And an extension cord with a retractable reel takes almost all of the cord headache out of the vacuuming equation. To use one, find as central of a location as you can, preferably in a spot that won`t cause you to wind around too much furniture, plug in your extension cord, and plug your vacuum cleaner into that.
Possible cause. During vacuum cleaning, especially in rooms with low air humidity, your vacuum cleaner builds up static electricity. As a result you can experience electric shocks when you touch the tube or other steel parts of your vacuum cleaner. These shocks are not harmful to you and do not damage the appliance.
No. Never use duct tape as an alternative to electrical tape. Duct tape is strong, but it can`t wrap as tightly around wires and contains cloth fibers which can be an extreme fire hazard.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.

Replacing Power Cord to Power Nozzle
ANSWER : The height adjust mech. has 2 tabs, that you have to unlock, It also is easier when you tip the power head so as not to puit pressure on the Ht. Adj. wheels. Use a flat blade screwdriver and if you look down bertween the ht. adj. mech. and the elboe where the wire is, you should be able to see the 2 tabs, just pry it away form the elbow and it will come off. When you put it back on, make sure all wires are routed where they were and tip powerhead, it will snap into place.

good luck!
