How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

One floor cleaner for the whole home

Our multi-surface cleaners can clean carpets, rugs, hard wood floors, tiles, laminate, linoleum and even rubber floor mats. Simply switch between modes on the device depending on the surface.

Plug the PowerSteamer into a proper outlet and turn ON the Power switch. While pressing the trigger, slowly make several passes over the area to be cleaned. Caution: Do not overwet. Turn the machine Power switch OFF and let BISSELL Advanced Deep Cleaning Formula dissolve the tough soil for 1-2 minutes.
Bissell Proheat Deep Cleaner

It features a patented hot water heater that provides maximum steam cleaning effectiveness via continuously heated cleaning action. The unit`s 12 amp cleaning system is quite powerful, removing tough and ground in dirt and stains from carpeting, upholstery, and other fabrics.

Can I use cleaning formulas other than the BISSELL brand? It`s possible to use others, but we recommend against it. Our formulas contain no dyes, phosphates or optical brighteners, and will produce optimal cleaning performance when used in combination with BISSELL carpet cleaning machines.

Have Dyson DC 14. When tilt to vacuum, the handle and coiled hose comes away from the unit. The problem started when the little purple ridged curved part on front of vacuum cleaner right below handle came loose and a spring fell out from somewhere–don’t know where. I pushed on the purple ridge part and it snapped back on. Now, can’t get it loose again, don’t know where the spring goes, and handle still comes loose from vacuum.
ANSWER : I’m not positive whether or not this is the wand handle because there are several versions of the DC14. However the device the locks and unlocks the wand in place is pretty similar between all the versions.

The first picture is the wand release catch spring. The second is the wand. The purple piece is the wand release catch. It is held in place at the bottom by two plastic pins. Basically the catch release is pressed over the two pins until they lock in the two holes at the bottom of the catch release. To get it off you need to pry it off and over the plastic pins. The spring simply sets in between the wand shaft and the back side of the catch release. There should be a spot on the back of the catch release to help hold the spring in place. If not you may need to replace the catch release.

I have a hoover 3000 i have not used in awhile, and since I removed a large rug, I would like to use it again on my slate floor. HOWEVER, I cannot get it to pick up ANY water in the water recovery unit……it is dry, dry, dry. I have put in a new filter, cleaned the nozzle unit, the scrubber , and reconnected both the recovery unit and the water unit several times, but to no avail. I would like to get a graut attachment a well as replacement part, but since I can’t get the basic unit to work, I
ANSWER : Have you made sure the plastic filter cover with the round hole in it that covers the filter is in place ( part # 59177096 ). This piece seems to get lost, and without it there is no pick-up. The other common problem is that the wheel assembly has been damaged. Look at the bottom of the Floormate. You will see a black plastic wheel assembly. There are two pegs at the rear attaching it to the base. If this piece has a crack in it where it attaches to the base, there will be no pick-up.

My vacuum hose has split very close to the handle- how do I remove the handle, cut the hose at the split & reattach it to the handle unit – Centralux central vacuum system. Where can I find a diagram of how to remove the handle?
ANSWER : Do Not Cut the hose!
It has wiring inside to control the vac and power head. This is a swivel handled hose with both low and high voltage contacts in it. The same wiring which gives the hose its ribbing, is conducting current for two applications,
If your hose has a switched handle, a very experienced, trained AERUS Electrolux tech will a have a tough time doing this job and will likely refuse as it is not recommended per company policy.
You can purchase a shrink wrap tube which will prolong the life of the hose if it has not collapsed, however this is a short term fix.
I could walk you through this as I have done it before …Unfortunately, even if you were able to dismantle the hose successfully you would not be able to purchase the wire terminals which you would cut off the end when shortening . Sorry its a proprietary part.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The Bissell 1698 Power Steamer ProHeat Upright has a – let’s call it a power drive rod that has come apart and is no longer working and needs to be re-connected. The best results of the power steamer is that the power steamer works better on the pull back, which means that you dispense the water, the brushes scrub the carpet and the vacuum picks up the water and it goes into the recovery tank – if you go forward use the trigger assm to dispense the water so I t get a chance to soak in but the best results are on the pull back. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

I need a relay board for a Nutone CV 450 12.6 amp dual motor vacumn unit. Where can I locate one? Part #??? Unit will run by itself, then shut off. Unit wll not run at all. It has a mind of its own. Crossed a couple of wires on one of the relays and the unit runs smooth as silk. I assume its the relay, but can’t locate part number.
ANSWER : Why not just replace the relay? Part number 1094117…

Electrolux Centralux I have a Electrolux Centralux. When I plug the hose in at one of the wall outlets the motor will not start. If I go to the motor and slap the unit it will start…..then…it will not stop unless I unplug the power cord to the motor. If I plug the power cord back in, the unit will not restart until I slap the motor unit again. The unit has only been used 20 – 30 times. Any suggestions?? Thanks, Bruce
ANSWER : I dont know if you had your unit looked at yet but it sounds like the Power module is going. I repair the machines so I know some of the work.

Our dustbuster (dont’ have model number with me-sorry) won’t turn off when I pull back on the switch handle. I disassembled the unit and realize that the tab on the switch handle that pulls back on the internal switch handle to turn it off is not strong enough for its simple task. Does B&D have a proper replacement part?
ANSWER : If you can provide a model number, I can check availability of the switch and can either order it for you, or supply the B&D part number and you can order it from most local vacuum shops in your area or from Black & Decker direct online: http://www.blackanddeckerservicenet.com/servicenet_home.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1
