How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Kirby vacuum cleaners are made of die cast aluminum where most other vacuums are made of plastic. This makes the Kirby vacuum more durable than other model on the market. This is why the average lifespan of a Kirby is over 30 years.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Test for a potential short circuit by touching each prong on the AC side of the power cord. If the multimeter beeps, your power cord is bad and must be replaced immediately. If your power cord is shorted, do not attempt to replug the cord into the AC outlet.
For a simple, straightforward way to repair a cord, fit it with a new plug. If you can`t find a new plug and wish to preserve the cord`s length, you could apply metal solder with a soldering iron for a stronger fix. Then, plug in your repaired cord to see that it works as well as a new one again.
Using a heat gun, some soldering wire, and a cutting tool, you can fix the faulty or broken wires, and restore your laptop`s charger to working condition.
The problem may lie in your vacuum cleaner`s adapter, charging dock, or battery and the electrical outlet. Try plugging your vacuum cleaner in to another outlet. If it is now working, the problem was in the first outlet that you have used. You should contact a certified electrician if you need to fix that outlet.
Kirby vacuum prices are higher than many vacuums found at big-box stores, but that`s because Kirby vacuums are made of durable materials that will last for years. Why replace an inexpensive vacuum over and over again when you can purchase a Kirby vacuum? This complete home cleaning system that will last for a lifetime.
For more than 100 years, every Kirby has been handcrafted in the United States from die-cast aluminum.
The price of vintage Kirby vacuum cleaners can vary widely, depending on their age and condition. The least expensive ones are probably worth about $100 and high-end models might sell for $2,000 or more. But if you`re looking to buy one that hasn`t been refurbished, expect to spend several hundred dollars.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.
The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle). Some manufacturers show the results from measurements made at the suction of the actual vacuum cleaner.
If the cord itself is frayed or has exposed wiring, you`ll need to replace the entire electrical cord. Replacing only the plug could leave you open to electrical shock.
Extension cords with three wires offer grounding protection, provided the cord is plugged into a grounded outlet. Even if the cord`s insulation hides the third wire, you can tell if it has ground protection by looking at the plug. A ground plug will have a third, round prong in addition to the two flat ones.
Coax cables—just like most things in our universe—have a finite lifespan no matter how well you take care of them. They`ll eventually deteriorate and go bad. When that happens, replace them to restore service to electronic devices.
Check for damage to the charger.

If you see a bare wire, stripped insulation, or wire shielding, that could be the source of the problem. Additionally, plug the cable in, then wiggle the cable at both ends. If the charger works intermittently as you move the cable, the cable`s copper wiring is damaged.

The cordless vacuum cleaner should always be connected to the charging station.
The BMS doesn`t only consist of the actual battery but also the circuitry and other components; together, they ensure the right range of voltage and current reaches the battery for a duration of time. So, in that respect, you can`t overcharge your handphone or vacuum cleaner.
The fuse in a plug is a safety device designed to protect the lead rather than the appliance. It is a deliberate weak link in a circuit which will `blow` if an electrical appliance or extension lead draws too much current due to either an overload or a fault.
Twisted Cord – Oftentimes we see that the rubber exterior of a cord is very twisted and disfigured by one of the ends of the vacuum. This is caused by the user either winding the cord from the plug to the machine or from the machine side to the plug with the plug still in the outlet.

I have had a chip in the cord of a vacuum . You can wrap it in electrical tape . I`d wrap it again in silver duct tape so I could be very sure of the repair won`t catch and unfray when you vaccuming . Silver duct tape repels dust and any more slicing on your cord will be difficult with a second wrap of duct tape .

.Hello,
.I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
.The question I have is it the Electrolux or the Royal cordwinder, if the cordwinder is sprung you may have to get a new one or a good used one, it’s been a while since I have done a cordwinder and I have seen it done, but I know when you remove the cordwinder you need to lock in the spring so that it does not loose it tension and re-coil ability. PLESS HELP MY.

I have a hoover upright bagless – turbo power 6500 The cord has been run over and I just noticed white stuff on the cord where it is tattered. My husband said he saw it 6 months ago and never said anything! Anyway, what is that white stuff in the cord? Is it dangerous in any way? Is it insulation? What is that usually made of? Just concerned since the cord is dragged over the floor and my little boy constantly has his hands and face on the floor. Thanks. Worried mom
ANSWER : It can be potentially dangerous. What you see is the cord insulation, if you move that a little you can see the power wires. They are coated and cannot hurt you if not damaged. If i were you i would wrap it in electrical tape or best thing would to get it replaced. You can replace it your self. Order the cable from Sears Parts store(link to your model)then your husband can install it. But not to sound rude if he didnt say anthing about that damaged power cord he may not be the right person for the job. He should have known it could be dangerous and thankfully your child wasn’t hurt or you two either.
Here is the part number (Part# 46383334) and it will cost you about $20 plus shipping. The cord is item number 63. Let me know if you have further questions./

Miele Red Star model S314. Cord reel is stuck. About three feet of cord is out. The rest of cord is jammed inside machine? How do I get to where the cord reel is?
ANSWER : It is actually simple when I tell you, Here we go…
.
.First, open the lid and take the bag, and hepa filter out of the machine.
.
.With a slot screwdriver, pry the hinges of the bag door out a little and take the bag door off.
.
.You should see one screw holding the black black panel, remove that. When that is out, you can pull the black panel off. It will give a little resistance to you, do not be afraid of breaking it, it will come off.
.
.Next you will see 4 or 5 screws down the holes there, remove all of them and the final remaining red piece will come off. When you pull this off, it will have both the cord rewinder and the motor assembly attached to it. It will be heavy becasue of the motor. Before you pull out the cord rewinder, just have a look at it closely and you may be able to just fix it without removing anything else.
.
.good luck with it.

Cord rewind The power cord is jammed and won’t go in or out. I can’t find a way to get the cover off to have a look at it. Any suggestions please?
