To remove, wash and replace the brush bars:
Use a coin to turn the end cap a quarter counterclockwise until it clicks into the unlocked position. Rotate the end cap to the open position. Gently slide the main brush bar out of the cleaner head.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
If your brush is scratching your floor, or not cleaning as well as it used to, then you may want to replace your brush bar.
Motorised brush bar, concentrated in a smaller head to remove stubborn dirt from mattresses, upholstery and stairs. Engineered to fit Dyson V15 Detect, Outsize™, V11™, Cyclone V10™, V8™ and V7™ vacuums.
Hold the brush bars under running water and gently rub to remove any lint or dirt. Stand the brush bars upright. Leave to dry completely for a minimum of 24 hours. Before replacing, check that the brush bars are completely dry.
Brush Head Bearings Are Clogged or Have Failed These are symptoms of bad or dirty bearings. You should remove the brush roll or rolls from the vacuum. Check to see that the bearings at the end of the brush roll allow it to spin freely. Make sure that there is no hair trapped in the bearings.
Now the part of your Dyson which is contact with the floor most is the brush roll and the soleplate, and not surprisingly, they very often get damaged or wear out. Fortunately they`re very easy to replace, and I`m going to show you how.
As the cleaner head and filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odour. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum`s filter. We need to advise you to stop using your machine and request that you contact your local customer support team.
From Left to Right: Round Volumising Brush – Long, fine bristles direct air deep into the hair to give body, creating tension to shape hair as it dries. Small round volumising brush – With a slim head and long, fine bristles. Directs air into the strands of hair, while bristles shape hair as it dries.
All Dyson vacuum cleaners have two filters, a pre motor filter and a post motor filter. This filter is a post motor Hepa filter for DC07 and DC14 Dyson vacuums, it filters air which has passed through the motor.
The DC14 was released in 2004. It is a revision of the DC07 upright vacuum cleaner with lower centre of gravity and `telescope reach`. It uses Dyson`s Root 8 Cyclone technology, which maintains constant suction.
The filter on the Dyson DC14 vacuum needs to be cleaned every six months in order to maintain its peak operating condition.

Hello. I took the sole plate of to clean the brushes on my dyson dc14 however the brush part came out and i put it back in but since then whenever i switch it over to carpet setting it makes this really horrible clicking grinding sound its only new have only used it a couple of times.
ANSWER : You really need to take the sole plate back off and make sure the belt is running exactly where it’s supposed to go and not looped over a piece of plastic or anything. More important is that you make sure the ends of the brush are seated properly and the bearings the brush is mounted to are clean and rotate freely. Look at each component and make sure they are assembled perfectly. Make sure a plastic ring or piece that goes on the end of the brush didn’t get dropped under a piece of furniture and you forgot about it. If the problem keeps happening, take the brush and belt back out and carefully turn the machine on to see if it makes the sound. If it doesn’t make the sound with the brush out, the problem is with the brush assembly. If it does make the sound, the clutch that turn the brush on and off is damaged and needs to be replaced. You can order a new clutch assembly and replace it without much trouble. They want you to think you can switch between floor and carpet settings all the time but it’s really really stressful on that clutch to switch between settings with the motor running. Think about how powerful that motor is. Think about the poor unassuming brush assembly being jerked to life by that powerful motor running at full speed. I’ve seen that destroy a clutch in about two years. Anyway, it’s much better for the life of your dyson to turn the motor off when you switch to carpet mode (when you turn the brushes on). You probably don’t have to bother turning off the motor when turning the brushes off, or switching to bare floor mode, because it’s not that stressful on the mechanism to just disengage the running motor.
My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible “ratcheting”sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and properly on the unit. I checked to make sure all of the “traps” and hoses are clear of obstructions, the belt is on the brush securely and moves freely, the brush itself spins freely, but there is still the “ratcheting” noise. Any other suggestions?
ANSWER : Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. Once removed, we pulled the black plastic end off of the center rod. We discovered hair wrapped around each end of the center rod. After the hair was removed and the clean/brush bar was re-installed, the vacuum ran flawlessly. Hope it works as well for you as it did for us.
I have a DC07 and the brush wasn’t rotating and I had no suction at the brush but perfect suction through the hose. I noticed a large build up of dog hair around the brush so I took off the cover plate and removed all the hair, cleaned inside the floor/brush housing and cleaned out the hose. I also cleaned the filter and removed the other air access cover and made sure that they were clear. I put everything back and the brush still doesn’t turn and there is still no suction through the bottom

I have a dyson dc07 with a malfuncitoning clutch diagnosed here on fixya. I’ve replaced the clutch and the grinding noise when the clutch is engaged for carpet and non rotating brush problem presists. This is after replacement of the clutch with a new part. Install of the new part went well and there are no otehr apparent problems with the unit. Ideas? The unit is only a couple years old and not used that much on carpet. For an expensive vacuum I’m not that impressed with it at this point.
ANSWER : Greetings from GoVacuum,
.
.If you have replaced the clutch already, then this can really only be one other problem, and that is the roller brush. If the roller brush’s bearing have locked up, and the brush is no longer spinning, this is going to cause the clutch to make that horrible grinding noise, and a lot of people incorrectly think automatically that the clutch needs to be replaced.
.
.Here’s a very easy way that you can test the roller brush on your Dyson to see if it may have gone bad. In 10 years of fixing and selling vacuum cleaners, I have never seen such a cheap roller brush that’s in the Dyson DC07 models with clutches, unfortunately this is notorious problem we see on this particular model.
.
.Ok, so to test out the brush, make sure the vacuum is unplugged, and turn it upside down. Remove the 3 plastic screws on the bottom plate, and remove the bottom plate to expose the brush completely.
.
.You may then simply pull upwards on the roller brush, and take the brush out of the belt that is wrapped around it. After the brush has been completely removed from the vacuum cleaner, hold the brush with only your pointer fingers in each hand, and only put your pointer fingers on the outside of the bearing caps on each side of the roller brush.
.
.While holding only the bearing caps with your fingers, try to spin the brush with your thumbs. The brush should spin freely in your fingers, and you should get a good 5 or 6 rotations with each spin.
.
.If the brush doesn’t spin, then your roller brush has gone bad. Espcecially with home that have long haired pets, or females, the hair gets between the bearing cap and the bearing inside and causes the plastic caps that are covering the bearings to heat up, ultimately causing the bearing caps to melt, and finally the bearings sieze, and the brush will no longer spin freely which is why the clutch makes that awful noise.
.
.Good news is that the roller brush is not as expensive or as difficult to replace as the clutch was. You may purchase the DC07 roller brush here;

Had my dyson root cyclone for about 4 years now, and in the last year it’s had a few problems. About 4 months ago it started to make this awful grinding sound when the roller bar was engaged and I took it to a repair shop and they said it was the roller bar itself. The shop replaced the part and it worked fine for a couple of months and then it started to make the grinding noise again. I tried the clutch reset suggestion (turn it on its side and turn the carpet/bare floor switch slowly back and
ANSWER : Bdepends how much thay charged you for a roller brush because you can buy a good vac for about 100 pounds with a 12 month guarentee so its up to you
I have a Dyson DC14 It started making a high pitched squeel so I took the filters out and cleaned them and i checked all places that pull out on the vacume to see if there was anything clogged. I also cleaned the roller brush. but when I turned it on, after a couple of seconds the sound came back again. can you help
ANSWER : Sounds like motor bearings are gone …. sorry.
We have a Bissell Proheat Cleanshot 2X Model 9500 Steam carpet cleaner. The first time we used it things were great. The second time we used it it left tracks in the carpet. We have no idea what caused this. We tried using the machine on an entirely different carpet and it did the same thing. After vacuuming the carpet about 10 or 12 times, the tracks are still embedded in the carpet – HELP!!!! We’re read and reread the manual and contacted customer service and received no help.
ANSWER : First things first. It’s only the second time you have used the machine, so it must be fairly new. If you have a receipt and the unit is less than a year old you should take it to an authorized Bissell repair center and have the machine inspected under warranty.
.
.Otherwise, The jets on this unit clog easily, there are two of them and you can locate them under the recovery tank towards the front of the machine, and blow them out with an air compressor. To prevent the jets from clogging in the future make sure to flush all shampoo out of the machine with clean water when done using it. That is most likely your problem.
.
.If it is leaving black streaks on your carpet it could be coming from a burnt belt or melted brushroller part, in which case inspect the belts and brushrollers and replace the damaged pieces.
.
.I hope this helped

.Good Luck
Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.
