How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
You`ll find it on your machine, on a label that looks like this. Example: 123-CA-A12345 or AB1-CA-A123456. First two fields are required. Example: 123-CA-A12345 or AB1-CA-A123456.
Brush Head Bearings Are Clogged or Have Failed

These are symptoms of bad or dirty bearings. You should remove the brush roll or rolls from the vacuum. Check to see that the bearings at the end of the brush roll allow it to spin freely. Make sure that there is no hair trapped in the bearings.

A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

The colour of the numbers and readings on the display are linked to the air quality of the respective category. Green denotes a high air quality, with low pollutants, and red, low air quality with a high amount of pollutants.
The biggest difference between the two is how long it runs. While the V8 cleans as well as the V10, it won`t run as long. Go with the Dyson V10 if your home is bigger. Otherwise, go with the V8.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
Description. This genuine Dyson vacuum part is the reset switch for the Dyson DC24 and D25 uprights. This switch needs to be activated if you experience a power surge while vacuuming, and your vacuum turns off as a result.
If your machine has a clutch, the reason the brush bar isn`t spinning is unlikely to be a snapped belt. The clutch allows your brush roll to be turned off (for certain types of hard floors, etc.). First you should check if your brush bar is turned on. Try to turn the knob one click clockwise to the “auto” position.

ANSWER : Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having difficulties with your DC24. If the cleaner head seems to be making an unusual noise during use, you may want to check all the parts are correctly assembled, and that the cleaner head and brushbar are free of obstructions. The video below may help in doing this.

If you’ve tried this and are still concerned about the noise, please get in touch with us directly, as we should be able to determine the cause of the noise over the phone, and provide further assistance. You can call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US) – it will help if you have the machine to hand when you call.

Noise My Dyson DC08 is making a loud, rough, vibration/noise that seems to be coming from the from the rotating brush housing. I replaced the old belt which was several years old and slipping. When I run the motor with the new belt removed the machine sounds normal. The bearings on the rotating brush seem to be running smoothly when turned by hand both when out of the brush holder and when installed in the machine. I can’t find anything rubbing on the belt or rotating brush. I applied a bit o

My brush roller stopped spinning so I had to take it off and clean out all the hair that had gotten wound around it. I replaces it and now it is make a lound noise, but only when the brush is on. Could it be the belt making such a loud sound? It wasn’t making this noise before.
ANSWER : Could very well be the belt..When cleaning the brush it is a good idea to add some WD40 at the ends where the plastic pieces are that hold the brush in the vacuum. The brush needs to be able to move freely around the plastic pieces..Add the WD40 and rotate the plastic pieces around the brush until they move freely..Reassemble making sure the belt is put in correctly so the brush moves in the right direction..

Dyson 18 slim the rotating brush bar will not rotate. Was working fine until I got the edge of a tablecloth caught in the brush, pulled it out ok but now the brush will not rotate fast, but will rotate by hand . Any ideas.
ANSWER : If the DC18 has a proteted belt then it will have to be replaced by a Dyson engineer or repairer. If the cleaner has a removable sole plate where the beater bar is then remove it and replace the belt – sounds like the belt has snapped and needs to be replaced. if your DC18 is still relatively new it should still be under guarantee.

I replaced the belt on my Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Vacuum and the brush roller rubs and makes a very loud noise when turned on. I have gone exactly by the manual instructions and made sure the belt and end caps were on correctly, but the bristles still rub the back and it makes a very loud noise. Without the brush roller in the vacuum, it sounds and runs normal. What could the problem be?

.Hello,
.I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
.The Royal Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Vacuum has just bushings in the ends of the brushroll and not bearings and once the bushings are bad I suggest that you replace the brushroll in the vacuum and put a new belt on the vacuum as well. There is no way to repair the bushing s in order to it to work properly. The suggested belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Suggest looking at a local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
