How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

A high pitch whistle could indicate a seal is damaged or the machine is blocked. If the noise occurs without the Wand and Cleaner head, it is likely to be caused by either the bin or cyclone.
What should I do? If your vacuum cleaner whistles, this is usually a sign that your device can`t suck in sufficient air. Often, it`s the dust container or bag that`s full. Check these first and exchange them if necessary.
Sound meters measure sound in the unit decibels (dB). We compared Dyson to three other vacuum cleaners on the market. Dyson has two modes, “weak” or “strong”. We found that the loudness from the “strong” mode is indeed very strong compared to other vacuum cleaners.
If your Dyson vacuum cleaner is making a loud vibrating or revving noise. First thing to try is empty your bin and make sure there are no blockages, if that doesn`t solve it then remove the brushbar and then try switching your Dyson back on again.
That`s nothing to worry about. The whooping noise is air coming between the post motor filter and it`s seals. This is very common on DC25, DC40, DC41 and DC55 machines.
If the noise is intrusive, switching the machine off at the wall will stop the noise, or altering the position of the product in the room might make the noise less audible.
Sound enclosures, noise reduction blankets, sound curtain noise barriers, or sound barrier walls are a few options to consider when reviewing noise reduction materials. If the vacuum pump is indoors, a noise enclosure would be the recommended solution.
It`s caused by a worn-out motor belt. The burning smell can also be as a result of the rubber belt burning due to the loss of elasticity. All in all, the belt is worn out and needs replacement. To fix the burning smell problem in a vacuum cleaner, you will have to replace the motor belt.
The sound level at minimum flow rate is quieter than 35dB the sound level at maximum flow rate is 59 dB.
Dyson V8: 71.3 dB

Cordless stick vacuums are known to be somewhat louder than canister vacuums. However, the Dyson V8 scores much quieter than other cordless stick vacuums. With a noise level of 71.3 decibels, it is even quieter than the Dyson V15 Detect.

This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine continues to overheat, please refrain from using it until it has cooled down sufficiently and then carry out the performance checks.
Typically, when a Dyson doesn`t pick up and has no suction, it is blocked. Dysons make a loud hissing sound when there is a blockage in the system somewhere. The DC50 is the same in this regard. Dyson publish a simple guide that covers checking your filter, checking the wand isn`t blocked, etc.
This genuine Dyson vacuum part is the reset switch for the Dyson DC24 and D25 uprights. This switch needs to be activated if you experience a power surge while vacuuming, and your vacuum turns off as a result.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
You can eliminate whistling of the sump pump hose when using it for dust collection by distorting the hose with a heat gun. Keep distorting different spots on the hose until the whistling goes away.

A vacuum leak occurs when air enters the engine from an unintended source. These include a cracked or loose hose, a faulty gasket, or a malfunctioning valve. When this happens, the vacuum pressure in the engine can disrupt. This causes the engine to run rough and produce a whistling sound.

High pitch My Hoover fusion vacuum cleaner began making a high pitch sound that makes it very annoying to vacuum. I cleaned all the things I could clean. I even cut out all the hair that was entangled in the brushes. Any idea what is causing the sound. It sounds like an siren is going off.
ANSWER : The Hoover Fusion has design flaws in the motor, including a metal plate that is too thin to contain the forces acting on the motor, particularly the constant strong tension from the drive belt, and a plastic plate that is attached to the metal plate by two screws that gradually loosen over time. Assuming the filters and canister are clean, a high-pitched noise coming from the motor indicates it is about to fail as a result of these problems. You can replace the motor after it fails, but the problem will eventually occur again. For those very mechanically inclined, when the motor first starts making the high-pitched noise, you can dismantle it and tighten all screws.

There seems to been a high pitched sound in the motor. I’d describe it as a ‘dry’ sound, and the high pitch of it is very loud. I want to stop vacuuming because it’s so loud. Are there any oil/greasing points/spots? If so, how do I find them?
ANSWER : High pitched noise is not good. It may indicate that a bearing is going out. I would not use Kirby as it may lead to burned motor.

If you feel that it vibrates quite a bit too – then it may be only broken fan blade.

Fan blade – you are looking ar around $40-$50 and if this is a motor bearing – $60-$80. If anyone wants to charge you more – we will repair it but you will have to pay shipping both ways (roughly another $30 both ways all together)

Ohhh yeah – try it with the hose. If no sound then brush roll bearings may be bad…

Good Luck,
Rocky

High pitched sound when power on
ANSWER : I had a vacuum cleaner that did the same thing. My vacuum had three suction levels. The noise level would decrease as I lowered the level. I also noticed that when I turned the vacuum off the sound didn’t stop instantly, it wound down/faded off as the motor slowed down. I found the problem to be the bearings in the main motor. I’ve been told that the motor that powers the carpet brushes can also make the sound if the motor bearing fails.

High pitched sound when vacuum is on
ANSWER : You may be loosing your bushings on the motor,if this is an expensive machine it may be cheaper to have it fixed,if not it will burn up eventually. Also try taking the beater bar out and make sure you don’t have something rapped around it causing a noise.

My vaccuum makes a very high pitched sound when it runs. I cleaned it out and checked for itms stuck in it but there doesn’t appear to be anything. What is causing this problem. Other than the awful sound it seems to be working fine.
ANSWER : Could be a worn belt. Here is the belt you need:

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Belt

I have a Craftsman brand shop vac [model # 113.77420]. It is still picking items when I sweep with it, but it has developed a very high pitched squealing sound whenever I turn it on. The sound makes it almost impossible to use. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bruce

ANSWER : I have the same problem with a CTC Shop Vac. It’s he bearings … they’re worn out and dry … no lubrication. I’ve trid taking the motor apart and lubricating the bearings, then it runs super for a few uses but then the squealing starts again. Oitch it and buy a new one.

Kenmoore Intellivac w direct drive suddenly started making internal sound like something was stuck. Hose is clear, and sound is made when hose is detached from main unit. Vacuum sounds find at lower pressure, only makes sound with bag door closed and/or placing my hand over the end of hose.
ANSWER : Shut off the vac and open container and remove the bag. Try dropping a coin into the hose, then raise up to see if it falls thru to the bag area. If it does check the throat of the vac where the dirt is sucked upward to dump into the bag itself.
