Self-propelled vacuums are powered by an electric motor that drives the brush roll. These machines are very useful for people with limited mobility as they can easily maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. Browse the top-ranked list of self-propelled vacuums below along with associated reviews and opinions.
This usually occurs if the dust cannister is too full or the filters are clogged and the motor wasn`t getting enough cooling air passing over it.
Check the Rotator Brush and Wheels

Sometimes pieces of string or other objects get wrapped around your vacuum`s rotating brush or around the wheels of the vacuum. Unplug your vacuum. Turn it over and have a look at the wheels and brush. If you see any pieces of string or objects lodged there, remove them.

Bagless vacuums, as the name suggests, don`t use a replaceable bag that collects the dust and dirt from the surface. A bagless vacuum cleaning machine is compact and uses a dust cup or chamber to store the dust and dirt. The dust cup used in the vacuum cleaner can be easily emptied and cleaned.
The Hoover self-propelled WindTunnel bagless upright vacuum is packed with features to make cleaning virtually effortless. It is self-propelled in both forward and reverse.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
First check the airflow valve located under the handle. Sliding this open may make it easier to push your vacuum. It could also be that your suction is set too high. To fix, use the suction controls on the canister to adjust the suction settings.
Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

No need to worry about keeping bags on hand or where to find more. There is no extra expense for buying bags. If your bagless vacuum has a clear cylinder or tray, it`s cool to actually see all of the dust and dirt particles swirling around in the dust cylinder under high pressure.

In general, bagged models tend to work more efficiently than bagless vacuum cleaners because they have an extra layer of protection for their filtration system. If someone in your household lives with allergies or asthma, it`s in your best interest to choose a model that will filter out the air as best as possible.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Factors may include having a bad motor, incompatible pump applications or poor ventilation. Constant overheating may indicate a malfunction.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
Overheating motor causing an automatic shutoff

This is most commonly caused by an air passage that is plugged by hair or dirt. Refer to the leaky hose guide to remove the hose, then inspect for hair or dirt clogs.

For bagless vacuum cleaners: Remove and clean the dust bin/canister. If possible, wash it in warm water. You may be able to remove and wash the hose, wand and accessory heads too, if they`re very dirty.
The HEPA filter is located under the dirt cup and under where it says HEPA. Twist the top counterclockwise to unlock the cap.
Putting in the incorrect amount of oil, putting in the wrong type of oil, and oil contamination can all cause the pump to not reach full vacuum. For this reason, you must check the oil regularly to ensure that it is not only clean, but also properly filled.
All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
Gravity and friction are the two main forces that make vacuum suction work. While gravity pulls molecules in the air toward the earth, creating an atmospheric pressure, the suction cup and vacuum pump cause a pressure difference, attaching both surfaces.
propelled by itself. (of a vehicle) propelled by its own engine, motor, or the like, rather than drawn or pushed by a horse, locomotive, etc.
Abstract. Self-propelled vehicles are those automobilesmotorcycles aircraft, boats, snowmobiles, trucks, tractors jet skis, lawn mowers, golfcarts, etc., that convert their own energy supply into motive power used for propulsion.
Push mowers require the operator to move the mower forward with no help from technology. Today, self-propelled mowers take the labor out of mowing your yard. With easy-to-use controls and a transmission that powers the drive wheels, you can effortlessly mow.

Hoover Bagless Windtunnel – Self Propel feature not working
ANSWER : I have the same problem with ours. If you lift the vacuum by the handle it breaks the lever on the transmission. You can find a replacement cable and lever on line for about $16.00 it is somewhat involved to repair but can be done by someone with mechanical ability. You can try and find a repair shop but be careful, they sometimes tell you the part is not available and try to sell you something else. I think they should be able to do the job for aprox. $80.00, but they may want more. I did it myself plus the height adj. knob for $24.00

On my hover U6616-900 the self propell work fine on the med setting on med height carpet, but when I go to low height carpet and height set on med the self propell does not pull the vacuum and it is hard to push. Also if I raise the height to the highest setting the self propell works correctly and appears to clen. Any ideas? S/N 090400184555, think this vacuum is maybe 5 years old and my wife uses it lots. Should I think of maybe a complete overhaul or a replacement at this time?

Hoover Self-Propelled WindTunnel U6436-900 cable problem
ANSWER : The flat belt should be changed if it has been longer than 9-12 months. Next I would remove the upper handle to inspect the top section of the control cable, sometimes it fray’s and has a sponge feel (no positive control) to self propel. To set this adjustment, it is best to do withthe hood off of the lower section. I would also look at the cable jacket in the foot to make sure it is under the metal clamp. It must be under the clamp to work properly. To get it under the clamp loosen one hold down screw at the top and one in the back of the vacuum, remove clamp screws and put jacket into position and then secure all screws. Now set the adjustment, Install upper handle and set self propel to off. loosen cable from arm in foot with torx screw. manually move arm until the clutch is off both drive pads. This is a visual adjustment. then secure and reassemble vacuum.

Hoover U6637-960 the self propel is not not working. When lowering the handle it acts like it would like to work but the roller will not turn. appears to be something to do with the self propel part of the handle . took the screws aout but can not get it apart. Is there another belt of something in there?
ANSWER : This vac has 2 belts. If both self propel and roller not spinning then most likely it is the wide flat belt broken or off. 4 screws on the bottom should gain you access to the belt area. another issue for this model series is a worn pulley on the roller, a new belt when inserted around the roller should be even with the top of the pulley groove.

I have a Dirt Devil Vision self-propelled vacuum cleaner. Recently, the self-propelled feature is stuck in the backward mode, so it only goes backwards! I can get it to go forward if I push really hard (i guess it is good for a workout!). I try to turn off the propel feature completely, but it will not turn off.
please help!
ANSWER : Hi, the problem you are having is going to be with the switch that controls the forwards and backwards settings so with this stuck in backwards their is no way you can get this turned off, the other problem is your not going to be able to replace this yourself as you cant get the parts, the only real option you have would be to find your nearest repair shop and get the switch replaces, usually one of your local hardware stores will be a repair outlet for your make of cleaner, or you could contact dirt devil via their web site and they would then tell you their nearest place to you for repair.

Now depending on how long you have had it would depend on whether your going to be charged for the repair, so check if you have any warranty left on it as this part would be covered by warranty, also this problem is known to dirt devil so they may repair it for free anyway, so your first option would be to contact them first and see what they come up with, if after doing this you dont want to pay for repair then you could get a local repair shop to remove this function from your cleaner by disengaging the self propelled motor so that it is just a normal vac, how ever this would be giving up and you would only be left with a normal vac.
the cost of repair would not be much so thats the way i would go.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

I have 2 Hoover Wind Tunnel-self propelled bagged vacuums-U6433-900 model. The roller bar does not agitate, the self propelled feature does not work and, in general, the vacuum is not performing well. I have replaced the roller bar, the v belt and the wide belt. The filters have been replaced and it has a new bag. I have had both of these since 2004 and they were fairly expensive $200 each) but if the repairs are prohibitive, I might as well get new vacuums. Suggestions? I just spent $100 for bel
ANSWER : The Hoover WindTunnel self propelled is a machine that we see in our retail stores (Vacuums Unlimited) constantly. The benefit of having a supposed “self-propelled” machine wears of quickly after the numerous time you will need to take this machine in for repair.

It’s unfortunate you’ve had to spend so much money already on repairing this machine. I know you’ve said you’ve already replace the belts and filters, but if you want you can check out a video we made on repairing the Hoover Windtunnel.

If you are looking for a reliable upright, at GoVacuum we’d recommend the Sebo X4 upright (http://www.govacuum.com/seauxseupvac.html). The machine is incredibly reliable and easy to maintain. Thus far, we haven’t had one warranty repairs come through our doors. The machine itself has a lifelong warranty on the belt because the machine automatically shuts off the motor if an obstruction is detected, preventing any undue stress on the motor or belt.
