How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.
The superficial causes for your VAX vacuum shutting off during use can be from blockages along the hose and body of the model. There can also be a blockage caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, hair and debris across the models` brush bar.
Overheating usually occurs because the dust bag has not been emptied, filter has not been cleaned or there is a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bent hand piece. If your vacuum shuts down unexpectedly, make sure you turn the vacuum off and unplug it from the wall socket.
If your Shark ION Robot R75 vacuum stops moving unexpectedly after a few minutes of normal movement, it may simply have low battery power. Check that the device is powered on and that the battery has a significant charge.
Check For Clogs or Blocks In The Vacuum

Check the hoses, the filters, and throughout the vacuum, and clean out any blockages or clogs. Vacuums will likely also have a recommended cooldown time to ensure that the vacuum won`t overheat. You will need to wait for that time before you turn the vacuum back on.

The vacuum has a safety feature that turns off the vacuum when the vacuum gets to a certain high temperature or overheats. This happens because the vacuum has a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum turns off due to overheating, the thermostat has to be reset before you can use it again.
This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine continues to overheat, please refrain from using it until it has cooled down sufficiently and then carry out the performance checks.
If there is something that has become caught in the hose in another part of the system, the airflow will be reduced and can cause overheating and a shut down. Clear out hoses, attachments, and brushes of any hair, dirt, and debris. This will allow for restored airflow and should get things going again.
An overheating computer can intermittently restart, shutdown, or experience performance issues. Eventually excessive heat can damage the internal components. When the computer overheats, you may experience symptoms such as: Fans inside the computer become louder as they start spinning faster to remove excess heat.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
Most owners believe that running their robot vacuums four times per week is sufficient to keep the floors dust-free. However, if you have children or pets, you should use your robot vacuum more frequently. Daily vacuuming is recommended if you suffer from seasonal allergies.
Applicable for those products

In this way, the vacuum can always be ready and cleaned on schedule daily. If you are leaving for a long time, like one week, it`s recommended to unplug the adapter and the charging base/auto-empty station and turn off the main power switch of your RoboVac for safety.

Overheated Motor

If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
Second, can you vacuum too much? Believe it or not the answer is no. Now, if you vacuumed continually 24 hours a day, yes, that would be too much. Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems.
Overheating due to clogged exhaust filter

The exhaust filter can also get clogged, causing a problem with the motor cooling. Therefore, you should also check the exhaust filter if the vacuum cleaner smells burnt. It is usually located on the top or back of the unit, right where the exhaust air comes out.

Why does my Shark vacuum keep stopping? For Shark robotic models, odd sweeping or sudden stops can often be a result of dirty vacuum sensors. These sensors can often be found on the bottom and sides of the vacuum. Hitting them with a soft cloth should be enough to remove any excess dirt.
Introduction. Is your Shark ION Robot S87 battery draining quickly or not charging? This is because batteries have a life span which decreases with every charge. If that is the case, you may need to replace the battery.
Check Your Battery & Charger:

Batteries don`t last forever depending on age and use. You may need to buy a new battery if your Dyson vacuum is turning on and off after only a few minutes of use.

It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening. Make sure there`s no dirt lodged in the top part of the bin.
Overheating may be caused from any accidental fault of the circuit (such as short-circuit or spark-gap), or may be caused from a wrong design or manufacture (such as the lack of a proper heat dissipation system). Due to accumulation of heat, the system reaches an equilibrium of heat accumulation vs.
The BMS doesn`t only consist of the actual battery but also the circuitry and other components; together, they ensure the right range of voltage and current reaches the battery for a duration of time. So, in that respect, you can`t overcharge your handphone or vacuum cleaner.
Vacuums often cause “nuisance tripping” with AFCI circuit breakers because vacuums produce a small amount of sparking as they run. And because sparks are essentially small electrical arcs, they`ll occasionally trip your AFCI breaker. Other devices that are prone to “nuisance tripping” include: Flat screen TVs.

I HAVE A BRAND NEW HOOVER MACH-3 CYCLONIC THAT CUTS OFF EVERY FEW MINUTES. IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! IT’S LIKE AFTER 5 MINUTES OF VACUUMING IT HAS TO SIT FOR A LEAST AN HOUR THEN YOU CAN VACUUM FOR ANOTHER 5 MINUTES. HELP!
ANSWER : If it were mine and it was brand new I would bring it back and exchange it. It sounds like the motor is over heating and shutting off automatically. Does not sound good. My advice return it.

Hoover mach 5 turns off after 10 minutes of use
ANSWER : I have had problems with the belts on my Mach 5 overheating (smell of burning rubber) and also with the motor overheating and shutting down.
.I learned the hard way that one of the issues might be that the roller/brush on the bottom of the unit has a metal bearing inside the roller/brush that can become clogged with hair (both human and pet hair) which effects performance of the unit.
.Another item to check is if your dust filter is not plugged up which is located behind the removable dirt cup. This is the cup that you remove that collects the dust/dirt/hair from your floor. Take the removable dirt cup out by depressing the gold button and then look behind where the dirt cup sits for filter. This can be cleaned out by washing it with soap and water in the sink but make sure you let it dry overnight before placing it back in the machine. This probably causes some of the overheating when not enough clean air is passing through the machine.
.It’s fairly easy to fix.
.Lay the vacuum on the floor so that you can see the roller/brush. Then remove the phillip head screws that hold the protective plastic plate over the roller/brush. (There are about 6 screws that hold this plastic protective plate in place) Also, you will be removing the (1) screw that also holds the plastic plate over the belts. There are (2) belts that you can remove and when in doubt replace these (2) belts for around $9.00.
.Once you have the protective plastic plate off that covers the roller/brush disconnect the belt is around the roller. Take the roller and cut off any hair that is wrapped around the roller. Next, grab the roller by each end and twist the ends caps and (1) of the ends will unscrew. Once you have unscrewed one of the ends remove any hair or dust that is trapped under this cap. (Be careful not to lose the small metal washer that sit on top of the bearing)You will notice under this cap is a metal bearing that can become clogged and jammed with hair. The hair should come out fairly easy and allow the brush to spin fairly easy once you have screwed the end caps back in place test that it spins freely. If it doesn’t spin freely replace the roller/brush with a new one for about $23.00.
.When you put the belts back on the thick rubber one (Belt # 40201-271) has probably become stretched and should be replaced for about $3.00. The small diameter belt that goes over the roller/brush probably does not usually need to be replaced and does not usually fit very tight. I have heard that people will take the small roller/brush belt and turn it upside down to get a better fit.
.I just did this on my Mach 5 and it runs like a new machine. I did end up replacing the roller/brush head.
.Hopefully you will find this useful.

Hoover Mach 5 turns off after 5 minutes of using. Can you advise the problem?
ANSWER : 5 minutes everytime? If so, raise brush all the way, and vacuum next to nothing. in fact, tilt vac up so the brush touches nothing. wait 5 minutes. If it doesn’t shut off, your brush is set too high. if it does, the motor is over heating. make sure bag is empty, no debris in brush, filters clean and make sure you’re not plugged into an outlet that a breaker on the outlet can pop too.

Bosch BSA2222UC canister vacuum shuts off after 5 minutes
ANSWER : I took apart the vacuum, removed the circuit board and cleaned the tiny bits of dust off it carefully, removed the cord winder (without letting it unwind) and carefully replaced both parts, blew dust out of the 2 armature brushes (lifted out the motor, removed the insulation wrap from around it and the 2 rubber gaskets first), then re-wrapped the insulation, replaced the motor, put it all back together making sure the switch was aligned properly, and ran it without the filters, hose, etc, until I was convinced it would stay on without impedance, then added one filter, then another, then the bag, then the hose and lastly the floor head. It never shut off so I think that small amount of dust on the circuit board was the problem. Hope this helps.

My Fantom Cyclone keeps turning off after 10 minutes of use. I will then let it sit for a few hours and then I can use it again for 10 mintues.
ANSWER : You may need to clean some internal filters. The one above the motor, just below the dust cup and maybe the exhaust filter

Have a Centralux Aerus about 5 years old. Don’t see a model number. There is suction but beater brush quit working. Was using for a few minutes, shut it off for a few minutes, turned it back on and suction only. Tried the reset button also. Tried the sidekick attachment and it works fine. There was no smell like something was hot. Belt is fine. Are there any fuses or anything else to try? This vacuum cleaner has not really been used that much, it is hard to believe the motor would need replaced
ANSWER : There probably is a loose wire in the handle near the switch or a wire off near the swivel elbow near the vac power head. With the right fastener tool to remove some screws you can fix it yourself

The brushes on the Hoover All Terrain Steamvac won’t turn. However, when I try to turn them manually they will turn. So, why won’t they turn when the machine is turned on?
ANSWER : Some vaccums have a belt on the brushes. might need a new one if it does have the belt

Mach 5 hoover turns off
ANSWER : Just got a solution off another website. There is a pre motor filter about the dust collection container. I opened mine and it was very dirty. I washed the filter and you are supposed to let it dry out for 24 hours. Hopefully this will work. Another guy said it worked for him.
