How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Your Vax carpet cleaner may not be picking up water because the machine has picked up too much grime, and has become blocked up. Check around the head of the carpet cleaner for anything obvious that might make the suction on the Vax weaker, or look for clumps of hair that could be caught in the bristles.
Use a solution of hot water and detergent, and scrub all interior surfaces. Sediment, algae, rust, and biofilm can be gone with a pole-mounted brush or a power washer. All hoses, pumps, and pipes used to fill and empty the tank should be cleaned and rinsed.
Sediment collects in tanks from the rain run off from your roof, which includes the dirt, moss, leaves and insects as well as pollutants. The sediment can make your water discoloured and affect its taste and quality as well as be a home for bacteria, affecting the health of your water.
Add 3 ounces per gallon to warm water in the clean water tank. For AutoMix machines, fill solution tank. Always consult owner`s manual.
If the dispenser has a steady drip, it may be caused by air in the water line or an improper water line connector installation after door removal. If the water filter was recently replaced, dripping from the dispenser may occur because air is trapped in the water filter.
If the cleaner is still not picking up water, you may have to rinse out the various parts with water before continuing. Try to rinse out the water tank, including the foam filter, and also rinse out the nozzle as it may have clogs in it. Make sure the circular hose tool connection door on the nozzle is closed as well.
Water Can Ruin Your Vacuum Motor

If water invades the motor, you may have a completely failed vacuum cleaner. Again, not only will the water be inside your motor, but it will be carrying dirt and grime with it, making it unlikely (or at least very difficult) to restore the motor to a safe condition.

I boil the water and pour it in carefully—boiling hot. Most home cleaners do not use the power of boiling water, but I do. I have done this for 14 years now, and without any problem.
A: You actually can leave it because unless you`re doing a really heavy job you probably won`t even use half of your clean water. I wouldn`t leave the clean water if I didn`t plan on using it in a week. Make sure you clean the dirty water immediately though. Helpful?
Hot water loosens and softens dirt more quickly, making it easier to remove, and it also helps to kill bacteria. That`s why we recommend filling up your carpet cleaner`s tank with warm water. Some BISSELL Carpet Cleaners also use HeatWave technology to keep the water hot throughout the cleaning process.
Press the Soap & Scrub Solution Button to apply solution while making 2 slow wet passes (1 forward and 1 backward) over the same area. Release the Soap & Scrub Button. Make 2 slow dry passes (1 forward and 1 backward) to suck up the dirty water (Do not hold down the Soap & Scrub Solution Button for this step).
Using and consuming water from an unclean water tank can house a variety of harmful microorganisms that can cause a variety of unpleasant water borne diseases and illnesses. These types of diseases and illnesses can not only impact the digestive system, but it can also have detrimental effects on your skin and hair.
Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. Absent, inadequate, or inappropriately managed water and sanitation services expose individuals to preventable health risks.
Waterborne illnesses can cause a variety of symptoms. While diarrhea and vomiting are the most commonly reported symptoms of waterborne illness, other symptoms can include skin, ear, respiratory, or eye problems.
If you don`t want to use bleach in your water, another option is to use vinegar and baking soda to flush the water tank. It`s not as effective as bleach in terms of sterilisation, but it`s a good way to keep it maintained.
When a carpet cleaner is done cleaning your carpet should be damp not soaking wet. Carpet cleaners should be extracting as much water as possible from the carpet so you don`t have so much water remaining in the carpet.
A carpet cleaner is best for short-term cleaning, and a carpet extractor is best for long-term cleaning. Carpet extractors are also the most useful choice if you haven`t cleaned your carpets in a long time, or use them very frequently. Carpet cleaners are best when the carpet is not used very much.
In simple terms, a carpet extractor is a carpet cleaner which “extracts” the dirt and stains to clean the fibres of a carpet, leaving it clean and sanitized.
A carpet extractor is a piece of janitorial cleaning equipment that uses pressure, water, and suction to extract deeply embedded dirt or stains from upholstery and carpeting.
The PowerScrub Elite Pet Plus also has large capacity clean and dirty water tanks to hold and collect over 1.25 Gal.
Home experts recommend that carpets and rugs be vacuumed at least twice a week, and more often in high-traffic areas. If pets are in the home, daily vacuum cleaning is strongly recommended to remove dirt, hair, dander, and the smaller microscopic allergens that are invisible to the naked eye.
You might be tempted to use a carpet cleaner, but don`t do that yet. You`ll be amazed at how much water a wet rug holds, so a shop-vac is the the way to go.

I have a Bissell Pro 2x carpet cleaner. The water heats properly as well as spraying the cleaning product. However, when I go to suction the water from the carpets, the 2 in 1 water tank bladder works properly but there is no dirty water outside the bladder. I have only used this carpet cleaner ~ 5 times and in the beginning I had to empty the suctioned water quite frequently as it was dirty and it could not not hold any more water. So I have done 1 room and all the dirt remains in the carpet
ANSWER : Check that the suction cone is not blocked. Check that the filter or hose to the bladder isn’t blocked as well.

I have a Bissell Proheat 2XTurbo carpet cleaner. No water will come out when I squeeze the trigger. I have filled the solution tank and the water tank. I read the troubleshooting in the manual and have tried turning it off for a minute and restarting and nothing. I took out both tanks and reseated them and nothing. It has sat for over a year but did not have any water in the water tank. Some solution was left in the solution tank. How can I make the water come out? HELP!

The Hoover Steamvac Widepath will NOT pick up water. The dispenser with cleaner DOES have water. The TANK that would receive the dirty water is NOT full. All tanks are on properly and the machine will still not pick up the used water. I found a tear in the interior hose leading to the receiving tank and repaired throughly with electrical tape. Still will not pick up the water. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Sounds like a clogged air path (no vacuum action) from the floor pick-up to the collection tank. Take the tanks off and deal with the vacuum problem alone. The collection tank should have a air exit vent–is it clear? Check the interior hose that you repaired–is it clogged? Remove the bottom plate and inspect the air path from it. Because this machine deals with water, clogs can become like concrete! Hope this helps!

I have a bissell quickwash 1950-e. I bought it Jan. 2006, and have only used it 8-10 times, I live in a very hard water area, so I though if I put some vinegar in with the cleaning solution it would get rid of any hard water deposits, unfortunatly the solution went lumpy in the tank and stoped spraying out water, I have opened it, hose clean, sprayer not blocked, x at bottom of water container when depresed water trickles out, component that opens the x when water container placed, also ran wate
ANSWER : Hard to say what is causing your problem, replacing the cap and insert on the water tank may help, part #2041111, even tho it may trickle out water when depressed, they can still be bad. The other thing would be the rod not relesing the water like it should. The big draw back to this model is Bissell has obsoleted all of its parts and most are no longer available. Might be wiser to buy new.

I have a hoover F5915-900. Today when I got it our to use it I noticed that it was leaking. I did some troubleshooting, but not sure where to go from here. The solution tank leaks out if the recovery tank is connected also. If I remove the recovery tank and leave the solution tank on it does not leak. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
