How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Your Vax carpet cleaner may not be picking up water because the machine has picked up too much grime, and has become blocked up. Check around the head of the carpet cleaner for anything obvious that might make the suction on the Vax weaker, or look for clumps of hair that could be caught in the bristles.
First, check to make sure the clean tank has water and/or the water & formula mixture in the tank. If your tank is empty, this could be the reason your machine is not spraying. You will need to fill your clean tank again. Reseat the tank and ensure it sits snug on the machine.
It`s really straightforward – all you need to do is sprinkle a generous among of baking soda over your wet carpet and let it sit. The baking soda not only absorbs moisture, but it`ll also absorb any nasty odours.
Most professionals will recommend that you bring in a dehumidifier. This will pull the water out of the padding and help it dry. Keep one corner of the carpet lifted a bit to also direct some airflow under there using a fan. Continue promoting airflow throughout the entire room as much as possible.
The Rug Doctor deep cleaner has a powerful motor that will suck up and extract water from your carpet. If you accidently applied too much cleaning solution, simply follow up with a couple of dry passes. Use your hand to help determine how many passes to make without the spray button pressed.
A possible cause might be that the tank is not properly seated. To assure the tank is seated properly, pick it up and re-seat is so it sits snugly on the unit. If this doesn`t fix the problem, make sure the tank is assembled properly. To make sure they are both latched properly, pick the tank up by its handle.
Make sure the Clean Water Tank is seated correctly on the machine. If it isn`t, turn off and unplug your machine, remove and reseat the tank until it clicks into place. This is also a good time to check for cracks or leaks in the tank. If it`s damaged, a replacement can be ordered on BISSELL.com.
Check to see if your clean water tank is empty. The clean water tank also may not be seated properly. If this is the case, turn OFF your machine and re-seat the tank until it clicks into place. Also try priming the system by holding the spray trigger down for 10-15 seconds.
Removing Water Stains from Carpets

Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a bowl and, using a cloth rag, gently apply the mixture to the water stains on your carpet by pressing down repeatedly until the stains start to lift,” he says.

Baking soda is effective in drying wet carpet because it removes moisture. Sprinkling it over the carpet and allowing it to sit for a minimum of 30 minutes will deodorize and dry up your carpet. Vacuum the carpet afterward to freshen it up.
Use a Hairdryer

To further soak up water, place towels over the carpeting and walk over them. As they become wet, replace them with fresh, dry towels. Hold a hair dryer over the damp towels and dry them on a medium setting.

The short answer is that yes, water can exist as a solid in a vacuum.
The vacuum drying process often involves multiple steps of applying heat and vacuum. Reducing the pressure (applying vacuum) at the surface of a liquid (such as water) will allow the liquid to evaporate without elevating the temperature.
If your carpet stays wet for more than one or two days, then the carpet will begin to smell. The carpet will develop mold if it stays wet for longer than 72 hours. The carpet will have to be treated with a microbial agent. Wicking is another problem that can occur if the carpet does not dry quickly enough.
Check the suction inlet on the body of the vacuum and clear it of debris if needed. Remove the hose from the base of the machine and remove any debris as needed. If necessary, you may use a broom handle to unclog the hose by pushing through both openings.
There is condensation in the stand steamer`s hose

To solve this, lift your stand steamer`s head to straighten the hose vertically and hold your steamer in an upright position: This will allow any condensation and steam to flow again. After this, your stand steamer should steam again.

First, check to make sure the unit is plugged in and is in a working outlet. Next, check to make sure there is water in the tank. It is very important to make sure you are ONLY using water to fill the tank. Other solutions may cause breakdown of the gasket and/or other parts of the machine.
Check your hose for any cracks or holes that can cause loss of suction. You may also have a clog in the lower hose. Pull down and at an angle to disconnect. A clog in the main hose could also be the problem.
A late return charge shall apply for equipment returned after specified period from time rented. Late return charges may be up to one day`s full rental charge for each partial to full day period for which the machine is overdue.
With proper care and maintenance, the Rug Doctor Pro is designed to last a lifetime.
Shop vacs are designed to be used on wet carpet to remove moisture, wet messes, and water. Use the carpet vac extractor attachment tool to remove the dirty water.
And, while a wet rug may not seem like a huge deal, wetness can actually cause some pretty serious damage to your rug. If the moisture isn`t cleaned up in a timely manner, it can destroy your rug beyond repair. Dyes can float, causing the pattern to become smudged. And, materials can also lose their shape.
Don`t use bleach or vinegar in the carpet-cleaning machine.

The pH balance has a lot to do with the effectiveness of your cleaning. Too high or too low can void your warranty or discolor or damage the carpet fibers.

Can’t find info for hoover steam vac spin scrub model # F5905900 on Hoover website, doesn’t show that model number at all…looking for mesh (kind of cone/cylinder shape) that goes in dirty water tank (I think) and also the tool (wand) that slides into front to clean it out. It doesn’t pull all the water up very well and the filter has been missing for some time. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it or not. As far as the wand tool goes, I have taken the cover off at this point and

I have a Bissell Pro 2x carpet cleaner. The water heats properly as well as spraying the cleaning product. However, when I go to suction the water from the carpets, the 2 in 1 water tank bladder works properly but there is no dirty water outside the bladder. I have only used this carpet cleaner ~ 5 times and in the beginning I had to empty the suctioned water quite frequently as it was dirty and it could not not hold any more water. So I have done 1 room and all the dirt remains in the carpet
ANSWER : Check that the suction cone is not blocked. Check that the filter or hose to the bladder isn’t blocked as well.

We have a Bissell Proheat 2X (model 8920). The problem we are having is when water/soap is initially released (all settings) it continues to leak out the front water spray nozzles unit the water containers are empty. The vacuum works but can’t keep up with the continuous water leaking out. Do you have any idea what is sticking open to allow the continued release of water when the machine is running? Thanks Rick
ANSWER : Return it. It is faulty and should not do that. Mine does not. Does require changing water about evrery 10 minutes but one can see the filth in the water. Also re-clean with plain water over areas that were cleaned to remove all cleaner. Old cleaner in carpet to dirt is like a bug attracted to a bug zapper. It can be time consuming, but it will pay for itself and can do a great job if you pay attention when water or cleaner runs out, otherwise it will not clean properly!

Hoover Bagless Hello,      My Hoover bag less (Model U5280-900) is not picking up dirt like it should.  The brush roll is spinning fine, but the bristles on it are only about one quarter inch long.  I am wondering how long they should be.  The vacuum is quite a few years old.  Do you think it is time to replace the brush roll.  Could you email me at [email protected] about this topic.  The product bar below did not contain my model no.  The correct model no. is above in my message.  Thanks

The hoover steam vac 5 brush agitator dispenses water and soap but does not show any return water to dirty water reservoir. The carpet seems damp but not soaked, still a bit troubling no waste water…what up ?
ANSWER : You do not have the needed vacuum on the dirty water intake. Possible causes are:
.1. No adapter sleeve in the back of the dirty water tank (the one that you remove to put the fabric hose adapter in)
.2. The dirty water top is not sealed (cracked, not on correctly)
.3. The intake shoot at the front of the unit is clogged with dirt/hair.
.
.REMEMBER: This is NOT a vacuum cleaner – it is not designed to remove hair and dust…. ONLY wet dirt. If you fail to vacuum floors just before steam cleaning, the unit will clog up in minutes!!
