How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Description. The Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner features high velocity suction that removes dirty water and detergent, leaving carpet revitalized.
You can use any brand in this machine. I have used bissle, hoover, even a Walmart pet one.
A: Yes, you can just rinse your carpet with plain water when using the Hoover SmartWash Automatic Carpet Cleaner. Helpful?
Wet/dry vacuums can vacuum up large quantities of standing water very quickly. One way to know if the canister is full: the motor sound changes, indicating this its speed has changed.
You can use wet and dry vacuum cleaners like ordinary vacuum cleaners to remove dust or debris from floors and curtains. Some of the vacuum cleaners also come with an attachment that is suitable for hardwood floors and other kinds of materials.
Avoid using beater heads and brushes – they will catch and lift the fibres, and eventually this will give your carpet a bobbled or felted appearance. Cut pile carpets should ideally be vacuumed with an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater bar and brush.
Steam cleaning kills germs, viruses, and molds.

When steam penetrates surface pores, it removes dirt, debris, bacteria, and other tiny elements with hot vapor molecules. These vapor molecules are so hot that they are able to kill even the strongest pathogens like E. Coli and Salmonella from your home`s surfaces.

Steam cleaners are particularly helpful for allergy sufferers, because not only do they clean surfaces of dust and other allergens and debris, but they also disinfect and deodorize without the use of harsh chemicals that could trigger allergies, asthma, and multiple chemical sensitivity.
A steam cleaner uses hot water vapor and a cleaning solution to displace and extract dirt, dust, and tough stains on your carpet. A vacuum uses an electric motor to suck dirt, dust, and hair from your carpet and hard-surface floors.
Not all vacuums are created equal, so it is important to choose a vacuum will adequately meet the needs of your carpet. If you`re buying new carpet for your home, consider checking with the carpet manufacturer to see if there are certain recommended features for your new carpet.
Any vacuum can clean hardwood floors—this is the simplest possible task for a vacuum cleaner. You don`t need anything special to get dust, hair, crumbs, or anything else off your wood, tile, or laminate floors. But some vacuums do it a little better than others.
Although vacuum cleaner and the short form vacuum are neutral names, in some countries (UK, Ireland) hoover is used instead as a genericized trademark, and as a verb. The name comes from the Hoover Company, one of the first and more influential companies in the development of the device.
The short answer is that you should not use vinegar for carpet cleaning. There is truth to the idea you can use vinegar as a natural disinfectant for cleaning but it cannot remove dirt or soil from a surface or from carpet.
A vacuum cleaner is designed for dry debris and a carpet cleaner is for stains. For example, a carpet cleaner is better suited for a pet stain, but a vacuum should be used to tackle their loose fur. In instances where you need to clean a mixed medium like mud, it`s safer to use a carpet cleaner.
Yes, you can clean a carpet with just water. Using water alone is an eco-friendly and cost-effective method that removes dirt and stains from carpet fibers. However, success depends on water temperature, agitation techniques, and proper drying. Consider professional help for stubborn stains or regular deep cleaning.
Not all messes are created equally, which is why a wet-dry vacuum that can handle wet or dry spills can be a useful tool for households big and small. “Wet-dry vacuums are extremely versatile and help to safely clean liquids and dirt in and outside your home,” says Leanne Stapf, COO of The Cleaning Authority.
If you try to vacuum up glass, the sharp edges will cut through the vacuum cleaner bag and end up scattered throughout your home. In addition, glass can shatter if it hits a hard object, such as the floor or a piece of furniture. It is best to avoid vacuum cleaners when cleaning up glass.
Overall, if you`re interested in a vacuum that collects dust and dirt efficiently, a dry vacuum cleaner is for you. However, if you`re looking for a vacuum that sucks up larger and bigger quantities of debris and collects water safely, a wet vacuum cleaner would be recommended.
A dry vacuum system does not use water to generate suction. A wet vacuum needs significant water flow to generate suction.
Carpet should certainly be vacuumed prior to a professional carpet cleaning. A pre-vacuum removes dry soil, surface dust, and dander so you get a deeper cleaning.
Vacuuming your carpet will not ruin it and will actually help keep it in good condition and will allow it to maintain its shape. Vacuuming a few times a week is recommended because this will keep your carpet as clean as possible.
Many people wonder do you mop or vacuum first? Should you sweep before mopping? Mopping isn`t a one-stop shop for cleaning the floors. You should always sweep, dust mop or vacuum to remove large pieces of debris and stray hair.
However, the basic rule of thumb is that carpeted floors and rugs should be vacuumed at least twice weekly and hard surface floors like tile, hardwood, laminate, and vinyl should be vacuumed at least once per week.
Yes, you can use a vacuum cleaner to clean your hardwood floor, as long as it has a specific wooden floor cleaning attachment.

Beater brushes not turning on the wife’s Hoover Steam Vac model F5905-900. Found one prior ”solution” stating that it sounded like the belt was bad. That was my original thought, but on checking schematics and trying to find part numbers at Sears Parts Direct and at Hoover, it does not appear the F5905-900 steam vac HAS any belts to begin with. What’s next??
ANSWER : This one I can tell you about from personal experience with that generation Hoover Steam Vac. After using it about 7 or 8 times my brushes stopped turning also.

I disassembled it (kind of like disassembling a Chinese puzzle box) and found that the Turbine which develops the torque for the brushes simply has worn out. I replaced the part and it works fine now. Unfortunately unless you are familiar with that sort of repair it’s high on the difficulty side. When I took it to a local shop they wanted about $150 to repair it. That was more than half the price I paid for it. It’s simply not a very good design. Hoover wont’ talk about them yet they are still selling them.

The least expensive place to purchase a replacement part is at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250648382497&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=70355e091290a0aad3175ab7ff9f985a&itemid=250648382497&ff4=263602_263622.

The repair shop wanted to charge me $60 for the part.

It seems that the manufacturer is ignoring the problem and it’s a great claim for a class action suit against them.

Turbine Hi I found out through your site that my turbin is bad on my steam vac and I found some information as well on how to disasemble the steam vac to get to the turbine but still was wondering if there were some more detailed instructions on how to remove the turbin. I am a sigle mom and doing the work on the steam vac myself and need a little more detailed instructions. Please help asap and have a bless day.
ANSWER : There are some screws on the bottom that have to come out so you can remove the top housing. Take the brush block out, there are 2 screws above where it sits. The turbine sits near the front, and in the mid section, 2 screws on the front of it and 2 long screws from underneath, if you already haven’t removed them. Unhook the hoses to it thenpick it out and replace with the new one. ( Some models near the back of the housing, is a catch on each side that you have to unhook to release the top).

I don’t know how to use my hoover steam vac on carpets, hard wood floor, my (tile floor), my upholstery. I’m spraying and yet I don’t see no suctions on neither of them. do you have a how to do step by step video that I can use in order to get the maximum result from my hoover steam vac.

Hoover steam vac all terrain turbine gear assembly
ANSWER : Hello,
.
.I’d be happy to walk you through this repair. Unfortunately this is a very common problem with the Hoover SteamVacs.
.
.Here’s what you’ll need to complete this repair:
.- Hoover Turbine Assembly For Model F5866-900 Part # 43191001 or 90001354
.- Phillips Head Screwdriver
.- Flat Head Screwdriver
.
.Step 1. Remove both the clean solution, and the dirty solution tanks from the machine, and press the handle release pedal so that the handle is laying down flat:

.Step 2. With a flat head screwdriver, pry off the rotating brush speed indicator knob:

.Step 3. Unscrew the silver screw that’s at the very top of the see thru suction port where the dirty solution tank rests.
.
.

.Step 4. Turn the SteamVac upside down so that the brushes are facing upwards. There are four clips that hold these brushes in place. You’ll need to remove the brushes from the machine by squeezing the four tabs while pulling upwards at the same time. The picture actually only shows the two tabs on the right hand side being squeezed, but the tabs on the left hand side are in the exact same location:

.Step 5. Once you’ve removed the brush block from the machine, there are 4 screws on the bottom that need to be removed. Keep the two silver screws on the very corner in place, you won’t need to remove these. Remove the four screws that I’ve highlighted in red:
.
.

.Step 6. Turn the machine back over right side up, so that the brushes are on the bottom. There are two clips that hold the top housing in place. Insert your flat head screwdriver in between the top and lower housing in the rear of the machine close to the rear wheels, and pry upwards to unclip these clips on both the left and right sides, then remove the top motor housing from the machine.
.
.
.19c46e5.jpg.
.Step 7. You’ll now have complete access to the turbine. Remove the two silver screws in the front of the unit that hold the turbine in place, as well as remove the front hose from the turbine:
.
.
.
.9f8ce8d.jpg.
.Step 8. Once you have removed the two screws you’ll be able to lift the turbine up. There’s a second hose in the rear of the turbine that you’ll also need to remove before you can remove the turbine completely. After you’ve removed the hose, take the turbine out of the machine. You’ll notice to the immediate left of the turbine other hoses that connect to a black circular part. This is actually the pump that sprays the water on the floor. If you ever have the problem where the clean water solution will not spray, it’s a good possibility that this part needs to be replaced.
.
.Simply install the new turbine, reattached the hoses and two front screws. When you’re putting the top motor housing back on the unit, make sure that the brush speed selector knob that’s on the right side of the turbine fits through the **** in the top motor housing. Also before tighting the two screws that that hold the top housing in in front of the brushes, there’s two clips. You’ll need to snap the top motor housing behind these two clips. Simply push front of the motor housing until you hear it snap into place.
.

Hoover steam vac, brushes won’t rotate, have cleaned filter by brushes, removed brushes and they rotate okay when off steam vac, tried to ajust level for carpet cleaning and brushes still don’t move
ANSWER : There are three things to check when experiencing ‘no spin’ on the cleaning brushes. 1) Check the small pull out filter screen under the machine. It must stay clean for air to pass to the turbine which powers the brushes. 2) Check that the long shaft on the brush assembly is not broken off. This shaft inserts into the turbine motor and powers the brushes. If you’re handy you can replace just the long shaft brush rather than replacing the whole brush assembly. Look for the brush on Ebay 3) If you’re handy you can dissemble the machine and inspect the turbine motor which powers the brushes. In all cases the bearings seize in the turbine. You can often free them up and re-lube them to get more service from them or simply replace the turbine assembly. Don’t throw your Steam Vac out because the brushes no longer turn…you can fix it!
