The suction power is measured in Watt (W) and is typically between 250 W and 450 W for machines with 1 motor. The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle).
Upright vacuum cleaners are lightweight, slim and are designed to be used in an upright position. They feature an easily manoeuvrable head and a long handle that eliminates the need for you to bend close to the floor, enabling you to stand or walk comfortably while operating the cleaner.
What is a Good Suction Power for a Vacuum Cleaner? An upright cordless vacuum cleaner should have at least 100 air watts to effectively clean a variety of floor surfaces, with the best Samsung vacuum cleaner reaching up to 210W*.
An upright vacuum cleaner should be around 100 air watts and a cylinder vacuum cleaner needs to be about 220 air watts.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Corded Vacuums
However, while they generally have reliable suction power, lithium-powered, cordless stick vacuums can perform just as efficiently. Corded vacuums will typically have more suction power than cordless options with non-lithium batteries.
According to our tests, the Shark Vertex Powered Lift-Away Vacuum is the easiest upright model to push, even on medium- and high-pile carpet. We also found the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet Reach Vacuum Cleaner easy to maneuver on flat surfaces, though it was a little cumbersome when cleaning stairs.
Upright vacuums are also particularly well-suited for carpeting, because they`re typically more powerful than cordless stick vacuums and can more easily lift up hair, dirt, and debris that`s embedded in carpet fibers.
A vacuum cleaner gets power from a regular electrical socket, with the average upright design requiring between 450 and 3000 watts. However, the most often used versions use around 1400 watts, equivalent to approximately 1.4 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each hour.
If your vacuum cleaner has lost suction power, it`s time to empty the container. Vacuum cleaners come with various foam or mesh filters. These might get clogged over time if not cleaned or replaced properly. This will cause your vacuum to lose suction.
Don`t expect this to deep clean carpet or rugs because it does not have enough suction or agitation. This will be most useful inside homes with lots of bare floors. The 600-watt motor is enough for cleaning high traffic areas.
Next, you need to consider suction power. Typically expressed in Pa (pascals), this is a measurement of how powerful the motor is inside a robot vacuum. A good number to look for here is around 2,000Pa or above for an effective clean.
In the U.S., the common standard to measure rough vacuum is inches of mercury (“Hg), which can be measured in two different ways. One method is as “Hg gauge (“HgV), where the scale starts at 0” Hg (atmospheric pressure) and goes up to 29.92″ Hg, which is perfect vacuum.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
As a central vacuum manufacturer we use the 120 and 240 volt motors. The 120 and 240 motors will not be adversely affected if used with lower voltages. The 120 volt motor will be fine on 110 volts. Likewise, a 240 volt motor will be fine on 220 or 230 volts.
Next, you need to consider suction power. Typically expressed in Pa (pascals), this is a measurement of how powerful the motor is inside a robot vacuum. A good number to look for here is around 2,000Pa or above for an effective clean.
Power. Most people should only require a 3.5 to 5 peak horsepower motor for their wet/dry vac. If it can suction up water and sawdust, you`re probably good to go.
Ultimately though, a suction force of 1000 Pa or more serves as the general rule-of-thumb benchmark for quality vacuuming performance. I did my research to compare the suction power of current vacuum cleaners, from robot vacuums to regular vacuums.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor, not contacting the carpeting?? I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting. Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner – MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I’ve had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. How to replace power cord on Hoover WindTunnel upright vacuum
ANSWER : The aforementioned solutions probably never even attempted this fix on this model. The handle does NOT need to come off. but the 5 screws on the front housing DO: 2 above the light and 3 below it. Then to get the colored housing off you need to access 2 screws on the underside that are beneath the agitator roller. To do that, obviously the 4 screws holding the bottom plate need to come off too. Once you have the main body housing cover off, then you can access the 2 screws atop of each trunnion cover that holds the motor assembly cover halves together. If you’ve made it this far, then gently pry apart the motor halves keeping even as yo do. Now you can see all the wiring necessary to cut and splice. Happy cord replacing! As for me, I am headed for the store, as I am not so sure I can remember how to get the darn thing put back together. But it was fun taking it apart!

Suction problem I have a Hoover Widepath Fold Away, 12 amp motor vacuum cleaner and the problem I am having is every time I vacuum, the vacuum gets clogged up with carpet. I am probably only able to do one stroke then it gets clogged and I have to stop and unclog it or it spits it out on the carpet. This is very frustrating and I don’t get much vacuuming done. Hi folks,
my beam vacuum makes a very loud roaring noise quite often.
the problem started when i was vacuuming up a quantity of vermiculite from my chimney.
i think i overloaded the vacuum i think and it made this loud roaring noise.
the vacuum tends to make thos noise when i am hoovering after 5 minutes or so.
any ideas?.

ANSWER : If the filter bag is bad and didn’t trap all of the dust, then it got into your motor, so you may have a problem with your motor now.
