How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
What should I do? If your vacuum cleaner whistles, this is usually a sign that your device can`t suck in sufficient air. Often, it`s the dust container or bag that`s full. Check these first and exchange them if necessary.
If your central vacuum is making loud or unusual noises, there are a few reasons why this might occur: The motor may be dirty and needs cleaning. Your belt drive may be faulty. The fan may be loose or damaged.
One of the most common reasons for your shark vacuum (and most vacuums for that matter) making a loud suction noise is because there is a blockage. They`re a very common issue, and easily fixed. Blockages occur when there is a large enough build up of dirt or dust that it blocks the air flow to the vacuum.
Check the hose for any cracks or holes. You may be hearing excessive noise because your filters are dirty. To clean them, watch our Cleaning Filters video. A damaged Brush Roll could also be the problem.
It`s caused by a worn-out motor belt. The burning smell can also be as a result of the rubber belt burning due to the loss of elasticity. All in all, the belt is worn out and needs replacement. To fix the burning smell problem in a vacuum cleaner, you will have to replace the motor belt.
You can eliminate whistling of the sump pump hose when using it for dust collection by distorting the hose with a heat gun. Keep distorting different spots on the hose until the whistling goes away.
Another popular solution is a noise reduction blanket or noise reduction cover. The sound blanket is custom fit to your machinery and wraps around the compressor portion of the unit. This creates noise barriers that reduce noise and effectively sound proof the vacuum pumps.
If the motor still has some life in it, it will start, but if it is going bad, it will only work for 10-15 minutes or less. If it doesn`t start at all, it is obviously bad. Sometimes slapping the motor or vacuum unit will jar the motor and get it to work again for a few minutes. Intermittent motors should be replaced.
Remove the main brush. On one end is the rubber part and with some gentle pulling, it will come off. Underneath the rubber bit is a brass bearing that can also be removed. Under the bearing there was a wad of hair that I removed and once reassembled it stopped squeaking!
When your vacuum pump exhibits loud or atypical noise, then it may be close to failure. Throughout their use, ageing and accumulated wear cause a specific part in the pump to fail. Increased noise is often a sign that a pump requires maintenance and cleaning.
However, the noise levels of vacuum cleaners fall between 75dB to 85dB. Thus, continuous exposure to such noise levels affect a user`s health while also being a sign and source of inefficiencies in the equipment.
Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, certain models of the Bissell Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum are being recalled because the battery pack can overheat, start smoking, and poses a fire hazard.
High-pitched whistling from the plumbing is caused by excessive water pressure or flow speed. If your water pressure exceeds 60 psi, it`s likely the pipes will give a high-pitched noise. The easy fix for high-pitched plumbing noises is lowering the water pressure to an appropriate level.
Whistling – Whistling or squealing in pipes is caused by water being forced through a smaller opening than the original plumbing parts are designed for. This is the result of wear and tear, or water mineral build-up in faucets and shut-off valves.
But to completely remove those dangerous particles, it is recommended that all central vacuums be vented outside. Venting is a simple and relatively inexpensive process to guarantee to your customer that their living space can be dust and allergen free.
If you listen very carefully, sometimes you can hear a “hiss” sound that is the signal of a vacuum leak. However, the most common way to notice this is when the engine loses fuel efficiency. The reason for this is due to the fact that vehicle exhaust is delayed on exiting the combustion chamber.
Central vacuum motors generally last for 800-1100 working hours. If your motor has run less than 800 hours or activates by jolting the canister, it may be possible to extend the life of the motor by replacing the carbon motor brushes.
Some vacuums come with an indicator light that lets you know when the bag is full. However, if any of the above is true – the suction power is low, you notice a foul smell, you`ve used your vacuum frequently for more than a month, or you`ve just vacuumed dusty materials – it`s best to change the vacuum bag.
It happens because the Dust Bin is full, the suction intake is blocked, or the Main Brush/Side Brushes is tangled with dirt and debris. Turn OFF the Power Switch. Remove and empty the Dust Bin, then reinstall. Turn the robot over.
It`s usually caused by friction between plastic- and/or metal parts. Apply a bit of lubricant, e.g. a silicon spray or similar, but be careful not to spill any of this onto the wheels or moving parts themselves. Usually a tiny bit of lubricant will do. Your Roomba has two main moving parts: Its wheels and its brushes.
A high pitched whistle can sometimes be heard because of a perished or damaged seal, or more commonly a blockage within the machine. If there is a problem with the seal then unfortunately a replacement would be required. If the whistle appears to be from a blockage then you will want to remove it.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
We recommend you clean your Shark vacuum`s filters every month – but always remember to let them air dry thoroughly before replacing them.

ANSWER : The power head requires 120 Volts. Some hoses have a receptacle in the handle for the power head plug, and the hose has a cord at the wall inlet end that plugs into a receptacle. Some hoses have a plug at the wall inlet end that plugs into a 120Volt receptacle built into the inlet. The hose plugs into this receptacle when you push the hose into the inlet. The power for this built-in receptacle is wired with line voltage when the system is installed.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

High pitch My Hoover fusion vacuum cleaner began making a high pitch sound that makes it very annoying to vacuum. I cleaned all the things I could clean. I even cut out all the hair that was entangled in the brushes. Any idea what is causing the sound. It sounds like an siren is going off.
ANSWER : The Hoover Fusion has design flaws in the motor, including a metal plate that is too thin to contain the forces acting on the motor, particularly the constant strong tension from the drive belt, and a plastic plate that is attached to the metal plate by two screws that gradually loosen over time. Assuming the filters and canister are clean, a high-pitched noise coming from the motor indicates it is about to fail as a result of these problems. You can replace the motor after it fails, but the problem will eventually occur again. For those very mechanically inclined, when the motor first starts making the high-pitched noise, you can dismantle it and tighten all screws.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.
