How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Clean the Canister: Empty the canister, then wipe the interior down with a microfiber cloth. The best-case scenario is washing the entire canister in warm soapy water. It will remove all remaining dirt, dust, grime, and hair most efficiently.
Use your vacuum cleaner`s hose with a nozzle or brush attachment to clean your non-washable HEPA filter. Run the attachment over the filter until you`ve removed all debris. Take care not to puncture the filter with the vacuum attachment.
If all your filter needs is a good cleaning, though, rinse it under warm water until it runs clear, then gently wring out the excess water and set it aside to dry. Finally, use the can of air duster to remove excess dust from inside the vacuum.
For bagless vacuum cleaners: Remove and clean the dust bin/canister. If possible, wash it in warm water. You may be able to remove and wash the hose, wand and accessory heads too, if they`re very dirty.
How Often to Empty the Vacuum Canister. Yes, the chart says to empty the vacuum`s canister after every few uses, but that`s at the very minimum. Rather than waiting for the canister to fill up all the way, the Vacuum Experts suggest you empty it after every use.
Bagless vacuums, as the name suggests, don`t use a replaceable bag that collects the dust and dirt from the surface. A bagless vacuum cleaning machine is compact and uses a dust cup or chamber to store the dust and dirt. The dust cup used in the vacuum cleaner can be easily emptied and cleaned.
Can you clean a HEPA filter? If your HEPA filter is not specifically labeled as washable or “permanent,” then the answer is no – while it may still filter the air it will have reduced effectiveness after washing.
Vacuuming can release and re-introduce pollutants back into your air, while washing the filters could potentially cause mold to grow if the filters are not dried fully. The only way to keep your filters fresh is to replace them regularly.
In both commercial and industrial uses, bag filters remove anything from sediment to other solids to some types of liquid from the water. As a reusable and washable product, it can be cleaned and washed without affecting its original filtration performance.
Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.
Mimi Hoang, a product manager for Black + Decker Home Products, emphasizes the importance of cleaning your vacuum filters: “Clean filters maintain strong suction and help pick up dirt and debris effectively. Filters that are clogged may severely impact a vacuum cleaner`s performance.”
If you have a bagless vacuum, the contents of the canister should be emptied into a trash bag and tied shut. The canister should then be washed to remove any remaining bed bugs or eggs. Also wash or replace the vacuum filters frequently.
Place a dryer sheet into the dust bag of your vacuum cleaner before cleaning to improve the fragrance of the vacuum cleaner itself. In addition, you may use some orange peel or a few drops of essential oil on a piece of paper towel to remove the odor.
Tap on the filter with a screwdriver. This will unstick larger sediment. Place the filter in a bucket containing half a gallon of lukewarm water and a few drops of dish soap or distilled vinegar. Leave the filter for about an hour, then remove it and rinse again until the water runs clear.
Cleaning the air filter not only does not improve, but also deteriorates its filtration properties. Only periodical replacement of the filter with a new one can provide efficient filtration of the air entering directly into the combustion chamber of the engine.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

No need to worry about keeping bags on hand or where to find more. There is no extra expense for buying bags. If your bagless vacuum has a clear cylinder or tray, it`s cool to actually see all of the dust and dirt particles swirling around in the dust cylinder under high pressure.

The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Think before you dump! Firstly take it outside, as far away from the door and path as you can, or near or into the wheelie bin. Empty the contents into a plastic bag. Dispose in the outside bin.
Bugs that do survive the suction and stay alive in the vacuum bag can crawl out. Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister when done vacuuming so that they don`t have the chance to get out. Discard in regular trash bags, and then spray bug killer into the bag or cover/seal it to make sure the bugs die.
Flushing vacuum dust down the toilet bowl will cause your toilet to be blocked, and even the pipes that lead to the sewers could be blocked. It might take a long time before you notice that the sewer pipes are blocked, and it is impossible to flush anything down the toilet.
A full bag will reduce the effectiveness of your vacuum cleaner, as well as contribute to poor air quality. It could even cause damage to the machine itself which could be expensive or impossible to repair. The take-home message is: check vacuum bags regularly and replace them when they are more than half full!
To open the bag, you simply pull the zip apart. You don`t let the air in via the valve. All vacuum storage bags will leak in air over time – Neusu vacuum bags have been tested to keep out most of the air, with only minimal leakage, after over four months.
Replace filter every 3 to 6 months.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. How do I open the compart to clean the bagless filter
ANSWER : Refer to the manuals for this model revision date 12-08, refer to Page 9.

Our problem with our Rainbow E Series is that it has sucked water up and blown it out through the lower part of the hepa filter, making the filter wet and dirty. This had happened before and the repair shop did not see any problems with the machine, so we replaced the filter and were very carful not to overfill the tank and to change the water often. Now it has happened again and ruined another filter. Do you know what could be causing this issue? Can the filter be cleaned or will a new one be

1. There is no reason to waste money on an EXPENSIVE replacement. While some people may like the fact that something that may be brand new may work better, this is not always the case.
.

2. You can easily set the filter out to try as long as there is NO WET ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, if so, you will be facing electrical damage
.

3. Once you have performed a natural or sun dry on the old filter, ensure to check your unit for anything that may have caused the back clog.
.

4. Back clogs for your model are often times associated with a BUILD UP of dirt and HAIR. YOU may always use pressure air for example at a gas station to flush out the build up.
.

5. Other occasions, users accidently build the vac WRONG causing continual backup and water going where it is NOT suppose to go.

Miele Cat & Dog vacuum gets VERY hot and is VERY loud. Hose has no restrictions and I have changed the dust compartment (motor) filter and the exhaust filter. It still gets hot when I run it with the top open and all filters removed, so I’m guessing the problem is with the motor. Should I be going into the motor compartment? If so, what am I looking for?
ANSWER : Hi
.
.The fact that it gets very hot could be due to a number of issues.,but the fact that it started making a very loud noise at the same time suggests that there might be more problems maybe brushes etc.
.
.If you could describe the sound it makes like a squeeling or electrical buzzing I know this might be difficult ,but it would help in the diagnosis.
.
.I will try to get more information on the unit ,meanwhile here is the user manual pdf if you don’t have it: http://www.miele.co.uk/Resources/OperatingInstructions/S%205001%20series%20S%205211_5781.pdf

ANSWER : How full is the bag?

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

Electrolux twin clean vacuum cleaner. After 5 minutes it keeps of thinking the filters need cleaning (and they don’t). I re charge the
power, and all seems fine and then it goes back to
wanting the filters cleaned. The suction is also
not working to full capacity.
ANSWER : Because the suction is not working fully it feels that the bags must be full and the air cannot be pulled through the bags. It could be due to 1) bags not being of correct quality. The air has to pass through them to allow all the dust to reach there. 2) There being real low suction due to a blockage somewhere. Check and remove he blockage.

I just received my Hepa filter in the mail today. Product #XSH621 – Hepa filter for EP619 & EP621 :005-04 When bought my vacumn, I was told that the filters were free and all I do is pay Postage. ANSWER : This isn’t really a problem that can be fixed here on Fixya rather than advise you as a buyer. You’d have to contact the people/company you have purchased the filters from and take it up with them regarding the postage. Hope you get a decent reply.
