How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

It is easy to clean by the quick release canister. No bags, just open the canister dump the contents, clean the sponge filter and your done.
Press release button and lift off dust cup. To empty debris, press lever to release bottom lid. Place vacuum in upright position.
Push a broomstick through the hose to force any large clogs out. Take the end of the broomstick and feed it through the hose. Push the stick in slowly so you don`t accidentally break or puncture the hose. If there is a large clog in your hose, the broomstick will force it out from the other end.
Clean the Canister: Empty the canister, then wipe the interior down with a microfiber cloth. The best-case scenario is washing the entire canister in warm soapy water. It will remove all remaining dirt, dust, grime, and hair most efficiently.
Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
To fix a clog in the head, flip it over and look inside. Use your fingers to physically pull out the clog, or the dull end of a thin tool (like a screwdriver), to push it out. Allow clog to fall and manually discard of the material. You may also need to disassemble the brush head to do this.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

Locate the filters on your Eureka Power Speed vacuum. There may be a HEPA filter and a foam filter. Remove the filters and tap them gently on the side of a trash can to remove any excess debris. Rinse the filters in warm water and gently squeeze out any excess water.

When we turn on the vacuum, the canister falls open. The clips holding the canister in place do not seem to hold the canister tightly which I’m sure that it did in the past. The clips do not look bent, but every time we turn on the vacuum the intense pressure blows the canister open only remaining attached the the rest of the vacuum by one clip
ANSWER : Check filter and make sure it is kept clean at regular intervals. Possibly worn out clip retainers on cannister side due to excessive pressure build up. Do not force closure unless pressure is back to normal. May crack cannister or damage unit beyond repair.

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

I have a Dyson Animal upright (purple). I took it apart to clean the cyclone chambers. When re-assembling the bottom closed before the opening rod was inserted. I can’t get the opening rod installed with the bottom opening closed. How do I open it? Thanks.
ANSWER : I looked in our DC07. I would try removing the top again and getting a long dowel or the opening rod, insert it down into the unit and PUSH. The opening rod opens the latch by pushing it, not pulling it. Here are some pictures of the latch. Top pic is in the unlock position. Bottom is the normal position.

I hope this helps.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.
.
.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.

Roomba Discovery My Roomba turns on and moves but the brushes won’t turn. Someone told me that I had forgotten to put in the yellow and black end bearings, but I did. Help, I miss my Roomba
I have a Roomba 530, I have had it for 2 weeks and really loved it. I have followed all the cleaning instructions etc.. Then the Roomba wanted it’s brushes cleaning “please clean Roombas brushes” So thinking that something was stuck I removed and cleaned the brushes, (yellow tabs on and in place by the way)
ANSWER : I read somewhere that you need to clear the software in case there is a glitch. To do this, take the battery out and then, simultaneously hold down the “spot” and “clean” buttons for 30 seconds. Replace battery. This has worked for my Discovery model.

ANSWER : Hello,
.
.Here’s a link to a very helpful video that shows you step by step on how to access and replace the belt on your machine. When the brushes stop spinning, but the rest of the machine works fine, this is a tell-tale sign that your belt has gone bad.

My roomba won’t go forward; it just rotates right ~90 degrees and then left ~90 degrees. I’ve cleaned the brushes, taken it apart and cleaned the brush gears, popped off the front wheel and cleaned the hair off that, taken off the front bumper panel and cleaned off the cliff sensors. Please help!
ANSWER : Compare your Roomba to the video on http://www.eesolutions.ca and look for the fix.
