Nespresso recommends descaling every 3 months or 300 capsules (whichever comes first). (such as vinegar or store-bought descalers) may cause damage to your Nespresso machine.
Mineral scale buildup can clog water flow, and if not removed, can cause a machine to stop working. Your coffee won`t be hot enough to enjoy.
All in all, your Nespresso machine should last between 6 and 10 years if you have a solid, routine maintenance schedule and take the time to descale it at the recommended intervals. If you don`t take good care of your Nespresso machine, you may get lucky enough to get more than a few years out of it.
How do you clean a Nespresso machine without a descaling solution? You can use a solution of white distilled vinegar and water. Follow the directions for the vinegar method above. Always remember to remove any capsules from the Nespresso first.
With machine being turned off, press and hold down the Lungo button for 5 seconds. LEDS will blink fast 3 times to confirm machine has been reset to factory settings.
If the descaling light is still on, the machine hasn`t been rinsed with enough water after using the descaling agent. We recommend that you flush the machine with fresh water. Remove the water tank from the machine and fill it to the `max` mark with tap water. Go to `settings` and rinse the machine with water.
Run the descale cycle

An orange light should appear to indicate the coffee machine is in menu mode. Push the lever down once to enter descaling mode. The orange light will blink throughout the descaling process and it will stop automatically when the cycle is complete.

We recommend using vinegar or citric acid. Citric acid may be found at health food stores, but lemon juice that is strained of pulp (think of the yellow plastic lemon-shaped container) will work as well. White vinegar works too but consider the smell and extra rinse cycles before you go this route.
The cleaning procedure will run automatically for 5 minutes. The procedure consists of 3 cycles of pumping water in, internal cleaning and water flowing from the outlet to complete. The procedure can be stopped at any time by pushing the button. The button will go to steady GREEN light when ready for brewing.
The descaling process is the same, no matter which method you use. Vinegar is readily available and more affordable than commercial descaler. A descaler is specifically formulated for descaling coffee pots and will keep the machine running reliably.
Descaling products are typically acidic and are used to remove limescale build-up from metal surfaces. Decalcifying products, on the other hand, are alkaline and are used to remove calcium carbonate build-up from surfaces like glass or ceramic.
So when you buy a more expensive Nespresso model, such as the CitiZ (which typically starts around $280), what you`re actually paying for are glossy steel parts or milk-frothing capabilities. Sure, more expensive machines also offer larger water tanks and the ability to hold more used capsules.
Nespresso Citiz is the more expensive option, as it`s built with more durable materials and has a larger water tank. You can buy the Citiz as the machine only, or a model with an integrated Aeroccino milk frother. The integrated Citiz + Aeroccino model is great if you like your lattes and cappuccinos.
We recommend using at least two tablespoons of white vinegar to descale a Nespresso machine. Pour the vinegar into the water tank, and run the machine on the highest setting for at least 5 minutes. Be sure also to rinse out the machine with fresh water after descaling.
If the machine is still blinking, exit descaling mode by holding the button for at least 7 seconds or refer to next section. If problem persists, call Nespresso.
When the descaling program has been completed, BREW and CLEAN turn off. Discard the cleaning solution and rinse the carafe thoroughly with clean water. Fill the water reservoir with a full carafe (12 cups) of clean, fresh water. Run the coffee maker through two complete brew cycles to flush the unit after descaling.
Descale your brewer every 100 cycles, or a minimum of every three months. An excellent way to remember is by descaling after you finish a box of 100-count filters. While descaler will remove limescale buildup on the brewer`s boiling element, cleaner will remove the buildup of coffee oils and organic materials.
You can use vinegar as a last resort. Mix 2-parts distilled water, 1-part white vinegar. This mix will be helpful because using pure white vinegar will be too aggressive for your coffee maker. Create enough mix to fill the water reservoir completely.
Yes, you can use vinegar. To do this, add half a liter of each water and vinegar to the water tank and press and hold the Lungo & Espresso buttons for 3 secs to enter the machine in descaling mode. Then press the Lungo button and wait until all the solution from the tank is poured into the container.
If the Keurig descaling solution isn`t on hand, white vinegar is the cleaning solution you can have on hand. You`ll want to do equal parts water and vinegar. Fill the reservoir about halfway with white vinegar, and then add water until you reach the top.
If you simply wish to top up your coffee, you can do so by pushing the coffee button a second time within 30 seconds after brew.
Run a rinse cycle — Descaling cleaner is strong, so you need to run a rinse cycle post-descale, and I recommend two rinses.
Nespresso machines should be descaled with a Nespresso Descaling Kit which contains a natural solution that thoroughly dissolves the scale build up. Other solutions (such as vinegar or store-bought descalers) may cause damage to your Nespresso machine.
