How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
The bin release button is located on the handle of the bin. Check the wand Open the cap on the handle and slide the wand upwards until both the wand and hose release from the machine. Press the button on the end of the hose to release the wand.
To put an attachment on your vacuum, press the red button near the base of the handle to release it and turn it into a handheld wand. Connect the hose to the top of the handle and slide your attachment into the opening at the other end of the wand.
Simply plug the product back in or restore the power and then switch off the appliance using the button on the control panel. The door will now unlock.
To fix a clog in the hose, feed one end into a garbage bag, and poke the other end with the back of a mop pole, until you push the clog material out into the garbage bag. To fix a clog in the vacuum, whether it is a canister or bag, use your finger to feel for a clog. Pull as much of it out as you can and discard.
There is a hinged piece at the top of the wand… flip that up then you can pull the wand out…. there is also a button lower on the wand/hose that you press to release or unlock it when you are wanting to stow it away.

I have a Dyson Animal upright (purple). I took it apart to clean the cyclone chambers. When re-assembling the bottom closed before the opening rod was inserted. I can’t get the opening rod installed with the bottom opening closed. How do I open it? Thanks.
ANSWER : I looked in our DC07. I would try removing the top again and getting a long dowel or the opening rod, insert it down into the unit and PUSH. The opening rod opens the latch by pushing it, not pulling it. Here are some pictures of the latch. Top pic is in the unlock position. Bottom is the normal position.
I hope this helps.

I broke the handle part of the shark steamer #53101. I don’t have the book to try to tell you the parts I need. Can you send me a picture or a copy of the steamer. It is purple. The above number may not be the correct one. It is broken in the center part. It has a little small circular piece that joins the two pieces which are broken. The beginning of the handle at the bottom of the steamer and the next session which has the steam release. The top of the handle is okay . It the middle and bottom

The mechanical off/on in the handle is not working with the electrical on/off switch upon removal of the handle you can cut the machine off by hand but after ensuring the the handle is re-placed in the proper position the machine will not turn off so what new handle or is the rocker switch has worn is now to hard for the mechanical switch to operated
ANSWER : Hi there it’s SmartAlec from
NelsonVacuums.com.au here. You are spot on in your diagnosis however i have fixed heaps of these and i have found no way to tell wether its the switch or handle untill you try 1 or the other part. If you are in Australia i can get the parts for you. Hope this helps, regards Alec
Hoover on off switch won’t turn off. I have to unplug the vacuum to stop it. I have dismantled the handle and now I can’t get the inditation in the handle to fit over the little silver knob. I saw there was an on/off switch under the handle that is controlled by a piece of the handle.
#1 question for the manufacturer is why don’t they put the switch on the outside instead of having gimicks that turn it on and off… arghhhhhhhh
ANSWER : Don’t know what model you have, but sounds like you will need to replace the switch. As far as your question, you will have to contact the manufacture for an answer. We only provide solutions to your problem and a model number would have helped.
My Dyson DC14 Animal doesn’t have the suction it used to. The piece in the back on the bottom – a flap it appears – stays open now, causing the machine to make a louder noise than usual. At first, if I put my hand on the flap opening it would close, allowing for normal suction. Now, it stays “open” permanently”, causing the loss of suction.

My 8 yr old kenmore vacuum works well – however the hose has worn under the handle where there is a hole (resulting in decreased suction power). I’d like instructions on opening the handle and bypassing the worn piece of tubing rather than replacing it for $129. Some of the handle screws remove easily but the last one doesn’t loosen easily.
ANSWER : Hi,
Have you tried spraying the stubborn screw with WD40 and let it soaked for a while? Other than these screws holding the handle together, there would no other way of opening it up.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
Dyson ball DC24 when you put the handle in the tube the handle goes toofar and pushes the bottom open
ANSWER : Hi there,
I can confirm that what you’ve noticed is part of the valve mechanism, which switches the airflow from the hose to the cleaner head when you replace the wand on the machine. This is a normal feature of the DC24, and nothing to worry about.
