How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Remove the filter and empty out any loose contents/rubbish. Rinse under warmer water for 1 minute (max 400C). Leave out to dry, making sure it is completely dry before refitting to your vacuum. Detach the Hepa filter and rinse under cold water for 2 minutes.
Vacuum filtration is a procedure in which a pressure differential is maintained across the filter medium by evacuating the air below the filter paper. Vacuum filtration provides a force on the solution in addition to that of gravity and increases the rate of filtration.
If you want to completely remove filters, go to the Data tab and click the Filter button, or use the keyboard shortcut Alt+D+F+F.
The motor filter is located behind the Electrolux S Bag. To reach it, simply push the bag to the side. To open up the motor filter compartment, press downward to release the locking mechanism and pull forward to access the motor filter.
HEPA filters are not designed to be washed and reused. Doing so will cause damage to the fibers which makes the filter ineffective and it will become void of its job. Once a filter has reached the maximum capacity of harmful particles, it will need to be replaced with a fresh, new one.
Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
Filter buttons are displayed within column headers and can be clicked to activate filter dropdown lists. Such lists enable end-users to specify data filtering conditions. The table below lists the main properties affecting element appearance.
Many vacuums have not one but two filters. The pre-motor or air inlet filter can be found before airflow travels past the motor. This filter is designed to catch dirt and dust to protect the vacuum cleaner`s internal parts.
“Most vacuum cleaners will have two filters – pre-motor and post-motor. In general, the pre-motor filter would be made of foam or fabric and can handle a larger quantity of dust before needing cleaning. The post-motor filter would more likely be folded or pleated and made from a finer filter medium.
filtration, the process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through but retains the solid particles.
The ideal setup in terms of the cost and performance perspective is 4 stages: sediment filtration, carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, and the post taste refining filter.
If the filter isn`t clean, it can impact the performance of the vacuum. Dirty vacuum filters can restrict airflow so the suction won`t be as strong.
The first thing you should do when cleaning your vacuum cleaner is change or wash the filter. Check to see what kind of filter your unit has and rinse it out or replace it. Let it dry while you`re cleaning the rest of your vacuum cleaner.
To maintain your vacuum cleaner, there are a few important steps to follow. First, empty the dust canister or replace the bag regularly to prevent clogs and maintain suction power. Second, clean or replace the filters as recommended by the manufacturer to ensure effective filtration.
Conclusion. Ultimately, running your vacuum over your carpets after a professional deep clean is great but remember to do it only after your carpet is completely dry. Vacuuming your carpet when it`s still damp could cause dirt to be transferred from your vacuum cleaner, so patience does pay off.
Let the filter dry completely — give it about 24 hours — before putting it back in the vacuum. Never dry the filter in the microwave or a clothes dryer.

It is often recommended, however, that dust bags are replaced when they`re around two thirds full or once a month. Daily and extensive use of vacuum cleaners will create a need to replace dust bags more frequently.

– Vacuum sealed bags are for the short term, no longer than 6 months. If you`re storing clothing sealed airtight in a storage bag, keep track of your items and remember to take them out after six months. Anything beyond six months, you risk them getting permanent damages such as creases and wrinkles, among others.
Canister vacuums are a versatile cleaning option because of the variety of tools that can increase their efficiency — including upholstery brushes, crevice nozzles and even mechanized brushes. These tools may be placed directly on the wand or conveniently on the canister.
Turn the suction unit “off” and allow vacuum to drop. Disconnect the suction unit from its power source. Disconnect the tubing from the canister and remove from holder. Carefully remove lid and empty contents.
The Bag Filter separates dust from the exhaust gas by collecting them with the filter media. The dust is accumulated on the surface of the filter media. And the filter media is cleaned by reverse airflow called backwashing (pulse-jet). The Bag Filter has a selection of filter media.
Some filter media, like bio-media, does not need to be changed. Other media like sponges can be cleaned and re-used multiple times before needing to be changed, usually in about 3-6 months. Chemical filtration definitely should be changed every 1-2 months of continuous use.
Canister filters provide superior mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration for larger aquariums or aquariums with a lot of fish. The body or “canister” portion of the filter is significantly larger than most power filters – imagine how much media canister filters are able to hold!
A bagged vacuum cleaner works in the traditional way of using a replaceable bag as a filter to trap the dirt while allowing air to flow through the bag. Bags must be replaced when they are full. Bagless vacuum cleaners use filters to trap dirt and debris in a dirt cup or chamber that can then be emptied.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.

Problem: Vacuum motor won’t turn on. The power head operates, but nothing from the vacuum. Have checked all areas of airflow: hose, bag, motor filter and hepa filter. All are fine. Have checked and rechecked all electrical connections, all seem to be in working order. Vacuum hasn’t run for a week or so, so it’s not the thermal protector, unless it’s defective. Vacuum was running fine last week. Didn’t stop operating when using. Went to v
ANSWER : Hello! The culprit is the PCB Assembly;
Part # KC86WBZR3000…Cost is $6.99. I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

I had used Dyson DC08 to **** out a wet car carpet. A few days later when using the V/C, there was a burning smell. Subsequently I washed the flexible hose, changed the pre-filter and post filter , but I wrongly put the pre-filter in the spot for the post filter. When the V/C was next used, there was again a burning smell and sparks. The filters were switched, but the V/C would not re-start.
What shall I do?

When we turn on the vacuum, the canister falls open. The clips holding the canister in place do not seem to hold the canister tightly which I’m sure that it did in the past. The clips do not look bent, but every time we turn on the vacuum the intense pressure blows the canister open only remaining attached the the rest of the vacuum by one clip
ANSWER : Check filter and make sure it is kept clean at regular intervals. Possibly worn out clip retainers on cannister side due to excessive pressure build up. Do not force closure unless pressure is back to normal. May crack cannister or damage unit beyond repair.

Overheated vacuum After I finished vacuuming the library last night I changed the bag and shook out both filters and vacuum would not restart. The canister unit felt real warm to the touch but I had been using it a least 1/2 hour non stop. The bag was pretty full but not overly so. It’s a Simplicity canister with power head. The carpet is long shag from the 70’s Did it just over heat? Thanks Shauna
ANSWER : It normally won’t over heat unless the bag is too full, the filters are clogged, or you have have a clog in the hose or down by the brush roll, the inlet may be clogged. Some will restart after a while, some others have a reset to push. If it won’t power on, then you have a problem and it will have to serviced.
